Updated review (for visit 1/7/26): After my last review, Black Bear Diner and the manager of the Federal Way location, Tanisha reached out to me to hear what went wrong. Tanisha asked me a lot of questions to see what went wrong and the alternatives of how my visit could have gone better. She told me that my experience should have not happened and that she was going to re-train staff members from all the negatives of my visit from happening. She was extremely professional, understanding and wanting to prove that this was how they operate normally. After hearing how passionate and truly wanting to avoid this from happening to anyone else, I told that I would love to give them another a try.
My boyfriend and I were running errands but I was hungry and Black Bear Diner was close by so we ended up stopping on Wednesday morning. The host was at the stand ready to seat us and he was very professional. Our server who was Maria again was definitely much more better this time around as she came to not only our table several times but other tables too to check in on them. It was much more busier than the last time I went but Maria was making rounds around the restaurant to all the times when appropriate which shows that the manager did indeed re-train the staff after the incident. I went with a sweet tea and their fish and chips while my boyfriend got a vanilla iced coffee and The Grizz. Although there was one issue, my boyfriend said he wanted the bottomless coffee drink but then he looked at the wrong item and said he wanted vanilla which was just a specialty iced coffee that does not come with a refill. I feel that the waitress should have clarified that it wasn’t bottomless refill as my boyfriend hastily was trying to pick out his drink. Although I also think he should have read more carefully, but if I always clarify with the customer if they mix things up so I know that they get what they actually want and don’t have any issues later. That vanilla iced coffee was really good though, I definitely wished I had gotten that instead of the sweet tea which was just okay.
The food was pretty good for the most part. My issue was that the fries that came with my food was soggy and not crispy which is upsetting as I detest soggy texture. However, they seemed busy and I was really hungry so I just ate a few and boxed up the rest to air fry later. I also asked for a refill of my sweet tea in a to go cup and this time, Maria filled up the cup perfectly. I’m so glad to hear that customer feedback does matter and when the manager and a team that strives to provide everyone with a great experience. I look forward to coming back and thank everyone at Black Bear Diner, especially the staff at Federal Way for their services.

District 29 Third Legacy
My friend and I stopped by thinking that the restaurant was open later. They were closing in 10 minutes and Marlon the restaurant Manager told us to come in and enjoy a meal. He was so nice and polite. He told us it was no big deal that he wanted us to eat and enjoy our time. The restaurant was so clean and the food was so fresh and delicious. Thank you so much Marlon for your service, we will definitely make the drive to come back and share with everybody our experience. We need more Managers like you.

We had the turkey dinner special on Thanksgiving. I was a little early for my pickup time and go to observe the staff in action. Everyone on the staff was cheerful and seemed to be enjoying working on the holiday. Special shout out to the young man packing carryouts and the waitress working the counter area. However, once we started eating the meal everything was so salty. The stuffing so much so that it left that sting. I wonder if the chef has taste issues or didn’t check it. My wife threw out the mashed potatoes. I had such high expectations after watching the staff but alas it was a real downer.

Me and my husband were recommended this place by a close friend and it absolutely did not disappoint. Maria our server was extremely kind and friendly and provided excellent service. The Classic French Toast was very well done not too sweet and not too bland it was just right. The prices were also very doable and the Bear vibes were cute. If you’re looking for a nice cozy diner this is definitely a great option.

Ive been to a few different Black Bear diners over the span of 10 years… with that said, the Federal Way Location is by FAR the BEST ive been to. This is the only diner where I cant finish all the food because the portions are fit for giants. The service… OUTSTANDING!!!! Our Server Jose did an EXCELLENT job making my mother who’s visiting from out of town, feel like she was at home. Whoever is running this location either needs a raise or needs to train others to do it like they do. Ultimate PREMIUM service… Definitely going to be bringing the family back…

I love this Americana restaurant. It has a nice rustic feel. It’s always clean and neat. While often busy, wait times are generally not awful, and the app makes waiting easy. The menu is quite varied, with breakfast served all day. The staff is friendly and helpful. No complaints!

We have been to the Diner many times with great service and food. Well today the kitchen didn’t want to work.
I got the NY steak and eggs. Which is what I normally get. The steak was small and the eggs were greasy and had at least 2 cups of onions, hash-browns had a bad taste. Before and after pictures. Hopefully next time will be better.

Food was bland and only thing that was worth a good review was the biscuit. Th gravy was no good it had no flavor. Pot roast melt was more like a grilled cheese with minimal meat barley covered half the bread. If you like unseasoned food they habe you covered. I dont know how this place is still busy.

I was with a large group and we chose the black bear because of the variety of food they offer. I ordered some tri-tip, that I ordered between rare and medium rare and it came out medium-well. I still ate it, it was fine. I’ve had breakfast here many times, and it’s fantastic!
