In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. Today, we continue their mission at every Black Bear Diner across the country, as we passionately provide guests an outstanding experience. Our menu offers comfort food classics, and our entire menu is offered all day long. Whether you are craving pancakes at 8 pm or pot roast at 8 am – we’ve got something for everyone. Went here for dinner because my wife had come for lunch and enjoyed her experience. Tonight was not what was expected. Arrived and sat just fine. Not a lot of people inside so sat right now. We ordered our drinks and when we got them, I had zero ice and my Wife had a few cubes. The soda was completely flat as well. From where we were sitting I could see into the server station and noted they were scooping ice from a steel bowl so I figured ice maker issues. Fine.

This place was packed. Apparently they have an app where you can get in line to reserve a table, which I’d definitely recommend. We ended up waiting around 20 minutes.

I love the food here and the servers are always amazing. The main issue is that there’s always a long wait and their policy’s don’t allow for you to call ahead to be put on the waiting list. This is a family diner in every way. The portions are huge and the food is good. Food isn’t “chef prepared cuisine”, but it is called a diner for a reason. You will get really good diner food and lots of it. The desserts looked amazing and service was top-notch. (The restrooms could use some service if the restaurant is reading this – One of the stalls in the women’s room wouldn’t close and there’s only one working sink.)

Food was good but underseasoned – please use some salt & pepper during the cooking!! It’ll bring out the flavors. My county potatoes were a little dark, and I got lots of little bits (like a “bottom of the bag” kind of thing). Huge portions! I put half in a to-go container right away so that I wouldn’t stuff myself, because aside from the lack of seasoning, it was so good!

Edit: I changed the number of stars because the restaurant gave me a comment I feel was wrong. While the food at these restaurants is fabulous this one the service sucked & the comment didn’t reflect this. There are a couple of these restaurants around just don’t go to this particular one. Trust me it’s worth the drive.
