In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. Today, we continue their mission at every Black Bear Diner across the country, as we passionately provide guests an outstanding experience. My first impressions of this place was that it was a very cozy place. I got the homemade chicken pot pie, it was delicious. The server was nice and the service was amazing! Overall had a cozy aesthetic with great food. I thought some of the decorations were fun

All of the food was great except for the bacon. The original bacon we got was all burnt so we sent it back. The next batch was almost the same with a couple of the 8 pieces that were somewhat edible. Our server was very apologetic and we knew it wasn’t her fault. She did her best to make it right. We’ve never had this problem before but we certainly did this time. I wish I had taken a photo of the burned bacon.

The service was horrible. They ran out of corn on our to go orders and instead of telling us, they gave us nothing. We then had to go back inside just to get our sides and waited over 20 minutes for them. I understand places get busy, but this was beyond that. The entire operation felt completely unorganized. I would never waste my time here again. The service was awful. Meat was nothing but fat – no flavor I asked for no onions and celery yet they still had it in the food. Just unfortunate that it was a bad experience 50 dollars later

In November 2025, we visited Black Bear Diner in Draper, Utah. On Tuesday, November 11th, or Veterans Day, Black Bear Diner provides a free meal to Veterans. The food was delicious, and we are so happy that Black Bear Diner treats Veterans so well.

The food was great and our waitress Ella with her big friendly smile was amazing!! She was on the spot helping us order dinner. Paid attention if we needed anything and promptly had it on the table.
Ella really made a difference in making our meal and time at Black Bear be a great experience. She was a friendly and happy waitress that really had it together.

Looks like the quality has list it’s uniqueness here. I use to really enjoy pancakes, etc. Now they are just your run of the meal out of a box type taste. Even the take home containers are flimsy and not microwaveable. They only had 4 staff so it tells me they may not be around long.

My husband and I went in for breakfast, and we had a really good experience overall. Our waitress, Kaia, was amazing. She remembered right away that we drink decaf—which almost never happens anywhere we go. Usually someone forgets and we end up with regular coffee at some point, so we really appreciated that she kept it straight the whole time. She even told us when she brewed a fresh pot! Little things like that really matter.
The food was good, and Kaia made the whole visit even better.
The only downside was that another server and the host got into a loud argument about table seating right by us. They were literally yelling over our table, which was uncomfortable and definitely not professional. Kaia tried to gently calm things down, and honestly, we were extra thankful to be at her table and not the other one.
We’d definitely come back—just hoping for more Kaia energy and less arguing next time.
