In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. Today, we continue their mission at every Black Bear Diner across the country, as we passionately provide guests an outstanding experience. Shout to Kyle for the best service ever! I first came to this location last year for my birthday and it was awful service nobody was even attending to us we basically sat ourselves down and our waitress never wished me a happy birthday even though I wore all this stuff that said it was the day of and anywho that left a really bad taste in our mouth so we said we’d never come back to this location however almost 2 years later I chose to come back with my best friend (the first time was with my mother) and omg it was exceptional! Both times the food was amazing but good service really goes an along way for me as I think it does for most customers and let me tell you, our waiter Kyle was the absolute BEST! he was friendly, attended to our every need, came and checked on us multiple times, thanked us when we chose to donate to st.jude and was just an amazing guy overall! From his welcoming smile to his friendly demeanor he was the best waiter I’ve had in a while at any place and the fact that it was here of all locations made it that much better and made me so happy I chose to come back after all this time and give this location another chance. Thank you to him for a lovely time we cannot wait to be back!

I LOVE this place. Stepped in for late night coffee and pie and our server Mike was honestly a breathe of fresh air, always attentive and cheerful, topped off the coffee fresh and hot and I had the best banana cream pie. The Buena Park location can learn a thing or two from Mike from Downey. I would give this place and Mike 10 stars if I could.

Black Bear Diner in Downey is just great. You can have breakfast all day and they have some great sandwiches, bottomless sodas, and wonderful desserts.
The place is clean and ever so comfortable. The staff is great. We always love our server. We have been a few times. They know the menu and are pretty fast, but they don’t rush you out.
The diner is super cute and you will be comfortable here. I love their coffee.
On Friday nights they have a special, hand-breaded fish fry and it is great. The pieces are long with just the right amount of coating and never overcooked. The fries are also great.
We love their breakfast. Their biscuits and gravy are great and the biscuits are always fresh. You can have that as a side or they come with some of the meals. The Bigfoot Chicken Fried Steak and eggs is cooked the way you want it and it is a lot of food. I sometimes share it and order something smaller for the table.
You will love their Big Bacon Breakfast. I think it comes with 6 pieces of bacon so I always have some to take home to my dogs. It has everything you want and more. Try this one first.
You can dine there and you should because it is fun, but they also have delivery and take away.

Just celebrated a birthday here yesterday and the experience was amazing! The kids loved it, the adults loved it and the waitress was super friendly! Would definetly recommend and come back. Keep up the good work guys!

Mike is overflowing with positive energy that really uplifts your spirit!
The food was absolutely perfect. The chicken fried steak was perfectly cooked and crispy. The gravy that accompanied it was really great as well.

It always hits. Theres not much to be said. It’s a corp chain that serves breakfast and dinner style food. That doesn’t mean it’s not good. It’s awesome. Food is always amazing, staff is always friendly. Always hits the spot for me.
