In 1995 founders Bruce Dean and Bob & Laurie Manley opened the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, CA. Their mission was simple: create a fun and friendly atmosphere where the local community could enjoy huge portions of home-style cooking at a reasonable price. Today, we continue their mission at every Black Bear Diner across the country, as we passionately provide guests an outstanding experience. Our menu offers comfort food classics, and our entire menu is offered all day long. Whether you are craving pancakes at 8 pm or pot roast at 8 am – we’ve got something for everyone. Really enjoyed our first visit to Black Bear. I had the New York Steak with baked potato and green beans. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare, and the potato was actually cooked all the way. ( It’s very rare to find this at any restaurant) Hubby had the Chicken fired steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. Everything was to his liking. Portions were so big we had to take the leftovers home, and of course, we had to pick up dessert on our way out. We selected the Coconut cream and Apple pie. (FYI-not full size but still large enough to share.) Our server was very attentive and gave us the extra time needed to look over the menu. Hubby is already talking about going back.

Short staffed, but that’s ok? Questioning this because it was Memorial Day. My grits came recommended, I was told that if I didn’t like them, I could get something else. I wasn’t really given the opportunity. She never asked me how my food was. The grits were lumpy and tasteless. Eggs Benedict was very pretty, but the Hollandaise sauce was not good at all. Will never go back.

Food and service are average. We had to wait for about 15-20mins before seated. It took about 1 hour to order and get our food. Since it’s Christmas and not too many restaurants are open, we have nothing to complain about.

First time coming to this Black Bear Diner and it was delicious! The cubs (kids) portion of the menu had a bunch of different options. We tried the chicken strips with french fries, Cub Cake (pancake) and the Papa Bear’s pizza, with fresh fruit.

I used to defend this place all the time. I noticed it’s very polarizing place in town and people either bash it or go regularly. I wanted to get breakfast and it was my day off.
