My wife and I chose Bistro Sousou after searching for a French restaurant in Melbourne. We wanted to go together early for Valentines Day and Bistro Sousou seemed like the perfect cozy dining experience. Being my first time eating at a French restaurant the menu seemed perfect for trying a little bit of everything.

Upon arrival the restaurant itself was very clean and well organised, the staff were very friendly and attentive.

For food we decided to try one hors d’oeuvre; Coquilles St Jacques, followed by three entrees; French onion soup, Escargot, and the baked Camembert. These were sensational each with their own well balanced flavour profile. They didn’t seem over-seasoned or under-seasoned, comme il faut as the French would say.

The same could be said for the main my wife and I shared, we decided to go with the Chateaubriand which came in a portion size fit for a king and great for sharing. The meat and all sides were prepared perfectly. With just a little bit of room left we chose to end the night by sharing a chocolate mousse.

I have nothing to compare Bistro Sousou to as it is my first French dining experience, but we will definitely be back again to try the rest of the menu!

Thank you Bistro Sousou for making our Valentines dinner special, we will see you next time!

I had a lovely experience at Bistro Sousou. The steak frites were excellent, well cooked and satisfying, and the drinks complemented the meal nicely.

The crème brûlée was very enjoyable, custard was smooth, rich, and had a beautiful vanilla flavour that really came through. I did wish the caramelised top was a little thicker for more of that crackle, but the custard itself was delightful and made up for it.

Service was attentive and thoughtful throughout, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and unique. Sitting beside the window and watching the world outside added a really nice touch to the evening.

Overall, a very pleasant dining experience with good food, great service, and a setting that invites you to linger. I’d happily return.

Another Great venue on a Melbourne Bar scene!!!!
Rustic interiors, warm, comfortable, communal, gives you immediate feel of belonging. Background “hum” of peoples chatter & light French music sets the stage for great night.
Service was excellent, attentive, not intrusive, friendly and quick
Just right!
Now about food! As a legit representative of French tradition, meals were prepared beautifully, presented well and they’ve tasted amazing. Whether you’re a Francophile or just admire well prepared comfort food, this little gem is a must-visit!
We had Oysters, Escargots de Bourgogne , Scallops, Coq au vin, Beef bourguignon, Cauliflower in a fantastic sauce and fish.
A bit of everything, but quite a bit as well, right…We’ve really enjoyed every bite and every sip of wine. Guest wise (at least that night) was nice mixture urbane clientele, younger groups, older groups, couples on date, all together very nicely blended into enjoyable relaxed crowd
This was our first time but we will be back, definitively!
Highly recommended

The best restaurant I have ever been to, and the best steak frites I have ever tasted.
I visited Bistro Sousou on a trip to Melbourne last year, and I think about the meal I had here all the time. It is my favourite recommendation to give to people travelling to Melbourne.
You will not be disappointed going out of your way to visit here.
From the atmosphere, to the food, to the service – this is the best experience you will receive. Highly recommend.

Bistro Sousou was on my list of restaurants to try for a while and I finally tried it tonight. It did not disappoint. My friend and I were blown away by the quality of the service, food and atmosphere. It was perfect. For entrée we ordered the soup à l’oignon. It was delicious and such a generous portion. For main my friend ordered the steak frites and I ordered the bavette. We were so pleased with the medium-rare cook on the steaks, the quality of the beef and seasoned perfectly. For dessert my friend had the creme brûlée and I had the tarte tatin. Both were equally delicious and not overly sweet. We will definitely be back at Bistro Sousou and will recommend to friends and family.

Had dinner here on a weekday and tried a few dishes. Complimentary baguette was served which was nice and crispy, not tough at all. The French onion soup was seasoned with quite a lot of herbs which tasted like oregano and the vinegary flavour was a bit too strong, but the partially submerged croutons baked with gruyere cheese was good. The crab croquettes with aioli from the chef’s special menu was very creamy with a thin delicate crumbed coating, topped with some shaved cheese for extra flavour which was tasty. Had the wagyu rump steak accompanied with a grilled prawn (was informed the king crab leg is unavailable) for main and it was cooked to medium rare as requested. Steak was tender but it did not have much marbling for a marble score 8/9; the red wine jus was nice but the steak itself could be seasoned a bit more. Still a good steak but just not what I had expected. Prawn was tasty with the garlic herb butter. For dessert, had the mi-cuit au chocolat which is a sweet and decadent molten chocolate cake which paired perfectly with the cherry vanilla ice cream. Overall a decent meal with good pacing and the staff was friendly and polite.

Marvelous is an understatement. From appetizers to mains and desserts, every dish tasted exceptional. The crème brulée and steak were definite highlights. Add to that the excellent service and warm ambiance, and the whole experience was beyond measurable. I will surely come back.

Our new favorite date place! I’d have to say that this cute little French bistro far exceeded our expectations on food, quality, service and ambiance. The place is quite romantic with classical French music in the background while the bartender would be shaking up a cocktail for guests. The food was prepared in such a classic manner that it was just waiting to be eaten. On top of this, the service was exceptional which added to the whole experience topping off a great evening. We have already penciled in our next visit.
