My partner and I had Valentine’s Day dinner at Bistro Grenier.
The reservation process was smooth – I was initially waitlisted and a staff member proactively contacted me when a 7:30pm spot opened up.
On the night, we arrived 15 minutes late (still within the grace period) due to difficulty finding parking in Newtown. We were seated at a nice corner table and ordered drinks shortly after sitting down.
The food itself was good overall in taste and quality.
Unfortunately, service timing was disappointing. Our first course (bread and butter) arrived about 40 minutes after we were seated. The waitress apologised for a mix-up in the ordering system, which we appreciated. However, subsequent courses were also slow, with 20–30 minute gaps between each after we had finished eating.
Dessert arrived just before 10.30pm, making it nearly a three-hour sitting for a seven-course meal.
While the restaurant was understandably busy for Valentine’s Day, service and kitchen coordination could be improved. We also noticed several tables that arrived after us finishing their course and leaving earlier than us.

We had a wonderful date night dinner out tonight at Bistro Grenier.
Right from the outset I was really impressed with the table we were given. The attentive service from Maya really wowed us too. She made us feel special, her knowledge and great suggestion of a wonderful Chenin Blanc to complement the seafood I chose.

Really terrific French bistro experience with top quality, friendly service. Made our own selections from the A La Carte menu which allowed us to try a bit of everything including vegetarian options for one of guests (all so delicious). Skip the bread and butter and go straight for baked scallops. Highlights for us were the fish crisp and mushroom vol a vent at entree. For mains we loved the cauliflower (best we’ve had) and steak frites (to die for).

Bistro Grenier has quickly become our fave restaurant in Newtown, not only because of its text book French technique, handsome farm house decor but also for the charming service. Expect great snacks, perfect souffle, roast chicken and steak fries. A stand out in the small list of mains is the fish with fresh corn and peas; interesting, refreshing, and utterly delicious. The sorbet is an intrigue but you’ll be richly rewarded. The wine list offers plenty of good drops to match your food order. A restaurant boldly proclaiming “les cinglés sont les bienvenus” surely knows how to handle change of numbers, sync food orders for late comers with the rest, and send us off on our merry way.

We were there during a busy time, that may have impacted the food, but thought that some dishes were overly salted or rushed. For example the gravy for the steak frittes being too salty and steak not having rested enough also did not help that we ended up waiting 30 mins for our main to arrive. The summer salad as well a bit of a mess.

Beautiful food and drinks, and the staff were amazing. We went for Valentine’s Day dinner, and the set menu was superb, especially when having to cater to my husband’s dietary requirements. We definitely will go again and will recommend to friends and family.

My wife and I enjoyed a delightful Valentine’s Day lunch at Bistro Grenier. Despite being short-staffed, Ian, the restaurant manager, took excellent care of us and the other tables.
We absolutely loved the food – every dish was spot on, and the dessert was fantastic too. The atmosphere was great, and the prices were very reasonable.
If you’re looking for a nice lunch or dinner spot in Newtown, this place is a must-try. We’ll definitely be back, and a big thank you to Ian for the fantastic service

My partner and I celebrated our anniversary at Bistro Grenier and absolutely loved it. The interiors were warm and beautifully styled, and we were seated right away. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and genuinely helpful throughout the night.
After mentioning it was our anniversary, we were kindly wished a happy anniversary and even surprised with a little extra treat with our dessert — such a thoughtful touch.
The food was truly outstanding and arrived at just the right pace. The oysters were some of the best I’ve ever had, and the scallops were perfectly seasoned. The standout dish for us was the prawn and chicken sausage — the sauce was out of this world! We also had the cheese soufflé, the lamb, and the fish, all of which were delicious, but special mention goes to the fish — another sauce masterpiece.
We finished with the hot maple pudding, which we’ll be dreaming about for a long time. We can’t wait to come back!

Cute date spot in Newtown! Main dining upstairs and wine bar downstairs. Scallops were delicious, loved the potatoes and steak frites cooked perfectly.
