Bistro 501: A Graduation Dinner Worth Celebrating

Some milestones deserve more than just a good meal—they deserve a memorable experience. We chose Bistro 501 in Lafayette for a graduation dinner, and it felt like the perfect place to mark such a meaningful moment.

Located in a beautifully restored historic building, Bistro 501 blends French-inspired cuisine with Midwestern comfort, all delivered in an elegant yet welcoming setting. The atmosphere strikes that rare balance: polished enough for celebrations, relaxed enough to truly enjoy the evening.

The menu is seasonal, which makes each visit feel special—and everything we ordered showed care and intention. We started with the bread service (warm challah rolls with Maldon salt butter—dangerously good). From there, the table filled quickly: duck poutine, hand-cut pommes frites, Atlantic salmon Alsace, duck au vin, a juicy French onion burger, and a beautifully cooked pork chop. Every dish felt thoughtful and well-executed, with rich flavors that didn’t overwhelm.

Dessert sealed the night: sticky toffee carrot cake, the kind of ending that makes everyone pause, smile, and agree it was the right choice.

Helpful Tips
• Make a reservation, especially for celebrations or weekends
• Ask about seasonal specials—they’re often the standouts
• Great spot for graduations, anniversaries, or date nights—they have a private room
• Save room for dessert—you’ll want it

Graduation dinners come once in a lifetime—and Bistro 501 made ours feel truly worth celebrating. ✨

Amazing date night experience. Loved the food, the experience and service. We had goat cheese stuffed dates (100% recommended), salmon and ricotta stuffed shells for dinner. Tiramisu was a bit of a let down but everything else was great.

I was excited to try the “French” restaurant, staff was nice. We had reservation for when they opened, arrived on time. Hostess was on phone when entered. We were sat promptly, only one other couple had arrived just before us. We were sat directly behind the hostess and right by the entrance. My companion’s view was a wall, mine was the back of a server station where they put the orders in. Out of all of the empty restaurant it was pretty disappointing. Hostess beverage of some sort of energy drink was placed on edge, we could hear every phone call, conversations with every guest that arrived, and staff discussing things. There was zero French ambience. No French speaking. Nor music. Background music a wordless jazz? Maybe? It was fine. Dated looking chairs and booth seat had a tear in it, but they were fine. Blue and yellow painted walls. Menu seemed alright. Food was fine, truffle fries are great. Server was new seeming, didn’t know how to pronounce menu items but they were attentive and nice. First comment my companion said about experience was the food was just okay, probably wouldn’t want to go back. Rubbed him the wrong way to be sat next to host and front door when much better seating options available, maybe that was our fault for not speaking up. We understand larger parties could have been expected and what not. I didn’t even get to see it was bigger place than I thought, he said when he went to restroom there was a bar area and more seating back there. I only got to see the front entrance area at my seat and back of server station so maybe ambience improves in other sections? All in all, it was fine. No real complaints. We won’t need to go back.

Bistro 501 is a must eat at spot in Lafayette! The drinks were incredible! Almost too easy to drink haha! The gimlet was one of the best I have ever tried. I also loved the lavender blueberry martini. For food items we went with the escargot, the radish and butter board, the artichoke and truffle risotto and the steak. All of it was amazing. The meals were flavorful and perfectly cooked!

Bistro 501 is our go-to place for date nights, brunch with friends, and special celebrations. The food is always top quality, delicious, and the menu is updated regularly to feature seasonal delights. We particularly love their charcuterie plates, Bistro Benedicts, and of course the desserts….be sure to try the crème brûlée. What makes Bistro truly stand out among other wonderful local restaurants is the welcoming and family-style atmosphere set by the owner and maintained by the excellent staff. For example, we went to brunch today to celebrate a birthday, and after making a comment about how delicious their coffee is, Bistro’s owner shared the name of the family-owned bean supplier as well as a to-go container with ground coffee for us to enjoy at home! Just one of many reasons we LOVE this place and will always return.

Our waiter Austin was very friendly and attentive. We came for Sunday brunch; I had the smoked salmon Benny and hubs had the corn beef hash. Both were delicious and so much food we could hardly finish. Ya know some fancy places don’t give you a ton of food, but that’s not the case here. We also had Bistro coffees that were very tasty. We were recently in Paris and really wanted to recreate our French experience and this fit well. Will definitely return to try dinner!

Visited for a fancy date night with my partner. Our server was knowledgeable about the various wines available and recommend a gorgeous cabernet. We started with the bone marrow, which was not my favorite (no wrongdoing of the restaurant, this was my first time trying it and I just wasn’t a fan of the texture.) My partner had the filet (not pictured) and I tried the seasonal tuna steak, which was delicate and flaky and paired great with the slightly spicy wasabi aioli. Lastly we had the creme brûlée, which was delicious, despite that I am not generally a fan of sweets. A little pricey, but well worth it for the quality of the food and the atmosphere. My only complaint is that we sat on the patio, which was a little cramped with very little space between the tables. Additionally, there was a live musical performance right outside the restaurant, and they did not turn off their classical music, which became overwhelming sensory wise. Overall, a great experience and would return- 8.5/10

The food was excellent. The service and atmosphere were exceptional. The owners took the time to come to our table and say hi to our daughter after she recognized them from Guy’s Grocery Games. They stayed to talk for quite some time and could not have been nicer. Absolutely worth the trip!

Visited Bistro 501 for a post-graduation dinner with family. We were all pleased with both the detailed exceptional service and the excellent food. Their menu has a wide variety of options, many with a French influence.

Main courses and desserts were excellent.

We will definitely be returning!

I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant — it’s truly one of my favorite places to eat, no matter the time of day. I’ve dined here for brunch, lunch, and dinner more times than I can count, and every experience has been consistently wonderful.

The food is always fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor with a seasonal change that welcomes new and exciting options. Whether I’m enjoying a hearty brunch, a light lunch, or a relaxing dinner, every dish tastes carefully crafted and thoughtfully prepared. It’s clear that the chefs take pride in what they do as do the bartenders crafting delicious cocktails.

The service is equally impressive. The staff are warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. They remember regular guests, offer great recommendations, and make you feel right at home every single time. Mary brings a unique flare from New England to Lafayette.

And the atmosphere — cozy yet vibrant — makes it perfect for any occasion.

In short, this restaurant delivers on every level. It’s rare to find a place that maintains such high standards across all meals and visits, but they truly do. Highly recommended!
