I stopped in for a late lunch right before close. I ordered “The Mikey” and an iced matcha.

The food and drink came out quick, tasted wonderful, and the service was simple and friendly.

I paid $24, which seemed a little expensive for a quick lunch, but they had a nice variety of snacks, coffee, adult beverages. Seems like a great spot to sit and work while enjoying some coffee. At the end of the day I’d rather spend money and support a local business than at a local chain.

Had the Chrissy sandwich, with the pasta side, and the green smoothie. It was a good light meal. Plenty of seating, nice atmosphere. Modern cafe deco. Plenty of food and drink options. Moderately priced. I can safely recommend this spot for a nice relaxing meal.

I’ve come here so many times and each visit shows me exactly why I should keep coming back! The atmosphere is very comfortable and the staff is super friendly and professional.

I ordered their lox bagel (my fave!) and their pear matcha, as seen in my pictures. They taste amazing; truly hope that you give this place a try!

We stopped in wanting to try something new. We were delighted by the awesome atmosphere, and great food. The coffee was delicious. The wait staff was friendly, and the owners came out and introduced themselves and were very gracious. A true gem. Branch out and try something new you won’t be disappointed.

Bistro 1940 is my husband and I’s new favorite stop! After news of the Grazing Tray closing in Jacksonville, we were on the search for a new go-to restaurant that offers quality and fresh meals with gluten free options. We’ve found it!

Smoothies, coffee, sandwiches, and salads. They have a great variety of items. When you step in, it’s decorated very nicely. You’re welcomed warmly by the owners. Once at the counter, we chose the Hug a Hero and Marty sandwiches. Service was friendly, and prices were fair. I got gluten free bread as a substitute, and potato salad as a side. The owner (I think his name is Marty?), brought our food out personally and was a pleasure to chat with! Beyond impressed by this genuine husband and wife duo!

Now to the food…

So. Good. The BEST gluten free bread I’ve ever had at a restaurant. Soft and moist, not dry and crumbly like almost every other kind of gf bread. The turkey, avocado, arugula, and pesto blend so well. And the potato salad, . It’s homemade and you can tell!

My husband couldn’t stop raving about how good his sandwich is. The perfect blend of crispy bread, soaking into the spicy and acidic juices, paired with FAT slices of meat. Such a well balanced sandwich!

And, to top it off, we were offered a complimentary slice of chocolate cake. That cake was HUGE, incredibly moist, and tender.

This will become a staple for us going forward, and we’re so happy to see a beautiful new addition to downtown J-Ville!

Also, it’s right next to Velo, so the perfect place to stop in after a class!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️½ (4.5/5) – A Charming Downtown Hideaway with NOLA Vibes & Delicious Bites!

Bistro 1940 is a fresh, stylish addition to downtown Jacksonville, NC, blending coffeehouse charm by day and sultry bar energy by night. From the moment you walk up, the aesthetic screams New Orleans courtyard—think wrought-iron chairs, strung-up bistro lights, and a vibe straight out of The Vampire Diaries (Mystic Falls, anyone?). Whether you’re stopping in for a morning latte, a lunchtime bagel, or an evening cocktail, this place nails the cozy-yet-sophisticated atmosphere.

What I Loved:

☕ Daytime Café Mode – Their coffee, matcha, and specialty lattes are solid (no Starbucks burnout here), and the breakfast/lunch menu (bagels, sandwiches) is simple but satisfying. Perfect for remote workers or slow weekend mornings.

Surprise Cake Roulette! – Their daily rotating slices (whole cakes available too!) are a fun gamble. So far, I’ve tried the coconut, chocolate, and pecan—all moist, flavorful, and clearly homemade. Still need to test the red velvet and carrot cake, but the variety keeps me coming back.

Nighttime Bar Transition – When the sun sets, the space shifts into a laid-back wine and cocktail spot. The liquor selection isn’t massive, but it’s well-curated—ideal for sipping something smooth under those twinkling lights.

Weekend Live Music (11 AM–4 PM) – Such a great touch! Adds to the French Quarter-esque energy. Rumor has it they might introduce karaoke nights—fingers crossed!

Why Not 5 Stars?

▪️ Limited Menu (For Now) – Since they’re brand new (~1 month old), the food/drink options are still growing. More savory lunch items or seasonal specials would take it to the next level.
▪️ Inconsistent Cake Availability – The surprise element is fun, but if you’re craving something specific, call ahead!
▪️ Still Flying Under the Radar – Not their fault, but more people need to know this spot exists! (Though part of me wants to keep it a secret…)

Final Thoughts:

Bistro 1940 is a vibe. Whether you’re a coffee addict, cake enthusiast, or cocktail connoisseur, this place nails relaxed elegance. It’s perfect for dates, solo work sessions, or weekend hangs with live music. As they settle in, I’m excited to see how they grow—already a downtown standout! Definitely give it a try.

P.S. If you spot karaoke mic setups… you heard it here first.

updated: i started by asking “how many espresso shots come in an iced 20oz?” and the response was “3 shots,” (which is espresso). so i said, “i’ll have two of those.” my drinks were brought out as iced coffees and i explained i wanted lattes (hence why i asked how many shots), but was told that wasn’t what i ordered. i asked to have them remade and ended up paying an additional $13. i did originally offer to pay for new drinks, although after leaving i feel this is an instance where spending $50 on our original order, i shouldn’t have had to pay extra for remakes when i asked for espresso based drinks the first time. the food is amazing, and this won’t stop me from going, but i wish the situation would have been handled better.

(changed back to five stars since the owner was very kind in the reply, and willing to help!)

upon walking in, i was greeted by friendly staff and a relaxing atmosphere. the name is spot on since it truly feels like a charming and timeless little bistro nestled right in the heart of downtown.

my iced latte was the perfect mix of tasty flavors and strong coffee. the build-your-own sandwich and pasta arugula salad was probably the best meal i’ve had in a long time.

i can’t wait to try more from their menu in the future. if you’re on the fence, this is your sign to try them out; you won’t regret it!

Ive been taking my kids here on lunch breaks since September of last year. The portions were great, service was super friendly and the atmosphere was cozy. The last 3 times we have been in, we have noticed the portions waning. The gluten free bagel was significantly smaller but the same price but at least the cream cheese was plentiful. Today there was barely any cream cheese on the bagel and the lady at the front seemed irritated that I asked for more. She also seemed irritated when I mentioned my gluten free bread was not toasted last time after I asked for it to be. This time, I got back to the office and there is maybe 2 oz of chicken salad on the “sandwich.” It used to spill out of the sides of the sandwich. I easily spend $30-50 every time I’m here but since the portions are absolutely nowhere near meal worthy anymore, I will not be returning. I’m unsure of what has happened between September to now, but its pretty disappointing since there aren’t many gluten free places in this area.

Pleasant experience from start to finish. The staff greeted us with smiles as soon as we walked in, which immediately set the tone. Everything on the menu looked great, but I went with the Classic Reuben with a potato salad side, along with a Banana Nut Chai. The food and drink came out quickly and everything was absolutely delicious. Solid spot with great service and quality food—I’d definitely come back.
