While visiting the Kalama Harbor Area, hanging with our friends and children in the park and playground enjoying the great September weather, hunger hit us like a wall. In comes Birrieria La Vaquita! The staff are super friendly, it is family owned and operated, and the food is delicious! They have an amazing selection of food, Birrieria obviously, street taco style or with melted cheese on a folded tortilla they hit up on the grill. They have Birria quesadillas, Birria nachos, and even a keto taco with a melted cheese “crunchy taco shell” with no grain!

They have great coolers to enjoy alongside your food, one with cucumber and chia, a pineapple one, a watermelon one, and a horchata as well.

Food is prepared quickly and with attention to detail, and their consume broth to go along with your Birria tacos is… DELICIOUS!

We happened in on a Tuesday so we had one of their 3 cheese Taco Tuesday specials which came out beautifully and was super tasty.

This is a great place to enjoy a bite while enjoying a nice show in the park, a walk along the river, or a picnic in the grass.

If you are ever in the area and want a quick south of the border treat, I highly recommend a stop in at La Vaquita! Super Yummy!

Thank you for taking the time to read my honest review and I hope you have a wonderful meal!

Cheers!

Great birria! We stumbled across this place after we decided not to wait for a table at McMenamins. The portions were huge, the people were super friendly, and the ingredients tasted very fresh. Definitely an unexpected treat in an unsuspecting place.

Their birria was flavorful, but the tortilla got way too soggy to handle. Same with the birria nachos…some chips were too soggy and some weren’t, so I had to eat what I could with a fork.

I would recommend eating this at a table with a napkin dispenser, and not inside of your car – like I did. Avoid making a huge mess bc the broth is spilling everywhere since the lid is melting from the consome being extremely hot.

Queso birria should have that crunchy pan-fried hard shell that makes it easy to pick up and dip with your consome, but I didn’t get that experience here. La VaQuita is good, perfect for Kalama Marina, but I’ll pass next time I am in town.

Some of the best food you can eat, family owned, you can tell the food is made with care and love for what they do. Tacos are to die for. Never had a bad meal coming here. Food truck is in the park which is a plus, plenty of seating to eat and sit by the river.

The staff were incredibly kind. The buzzer indicating our food was ready didn’t go off because we were inside the market and they came to find us to deliver our food. The gentleman that brought it was very nice. My husband and I shared the nachos and we felt it was a very good sharing size. The meat was well seasoned and not too fatty. The toppings were evenly dispersed, no sad looking chips!

Warning ‼️ messy!

I moved back to Kalama over a year ago and just discovered this place last month, now I’m kicking myself! How did I not know about this place sooner?

Well, I do now. And now this will probably be my favorite summer spot for a lunch break with a view.

The location?
At the beautiful Kalama marina ✅
The convenience?
Adequate parking, short walk, next to a building with cute artisan stores ✅
The food?
So good. Flavor is good. The juiciness of the meat, excellent. The portion sizes are very good considering it’s absolutely restaurant quality.

The menu is less diverse than many food carts, which is generally a drawback. However I believe that this means their food is better just a little, because they spend so much practice on one signature ingredient and keep the dishes fairly simple. Also a huge plus for any preferential eaters, less random extras to remove or change.

The staff is very friendly and respectful. I don’t normally like being called ma’am, but the kind girl who takes the orders is very polite.

A great option if your in the area.

The beef –
was plain pulled roast, natural color and quality A-
The tortilla were unique in color and texture. A+
The long onions on the side were potentially fermented or pickled as far as I could tell. A+
The
Came with many lime and reddish.

Very full tacos!

HOT sauce- 3 pictured. 2 were the same flavor with slightly different heat. Very bbq flavor, as the peppers were grilled a long time. “One salsa as far as I’m concerned, I finished both” The 3rd had a peanut vibe that was interesting. “I finished half as it wasn’t my favorite, yet appreciated the experience”
Hot sauce/ salsa as pictured I’ll say C+ because I would have appreciated 1 or 2 more additional flavor options.

This place is awesome. Good local people making great food. Since trying Birria at this place I learned that I love it and have tried it in many places in many states and none is as good. This place has the best, most flavorful Birria and I cannot wait to go back!

I was on my way back from Longview and got off the freeway because I saw McMenamins. I didn’t go there, but walked around and found Birrieria

After returning from Manzanillo Mexico I was craving authentic food. I stopped at La Vaquita and was totally impressed. First the Birria tacos (3 x $10 on Tuesdays) were the best I have had outside of Mexico. I also had a pineapple Agua fresca with all the trimmings. Soooo good. Marco, who took our order, was very friendly and talkative. I enjoyed chatting with him. I decided to eat the tacos on some tables riverside. What a great dining experience. A delicious stop in Kalama.
