We definitely will be back! Its a easy walk from the cruise terminal.
This place thankfully made our food tour we did around Ensenada during one of our cruise port days. I had never had birria before and this was amazing.
It’s always comforting to walk into a restaurant and only see locals–means you’re in the right place and this place was just that.
We ordered the Chica Beef Birria, 2 pork birria tacos, and one beef birria taco. Unbeknownst to us, the chica beef birria is essentially a stew (beef in a broth) that comes with tortillas on the side so you can make your own tacos. So if we were to do this again, we would not have gotten the tacos. We did end up liking the pork more than the beef though but both were fun to try. (all of the toppings you see in the first photo came with our meal — we didn’t pay any extra for the cilantro, onions, beans, chips and salsa, etc).
We were on a seventeen day cruise of Hawaii, and Ensenada was our fifth and last stop. During our trip, the restaurant manager in our cruise ship dining room, Viviana, became really good friends with us. She is Mexican, and when we asked her for recommendations in Ensenada, she lit up with excitement talking about Guadalajara Restaurant. She shared that she recommends this restaurant to all of her guests, so we knew we absolutely had to try it.
After walking around and exploring downtown Ensenada, my husband and I made our way to the restaurant. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly and kindly greeted by Arturo. His hospitality immediately made us feel welcome and relaxed.
They brought out an incredibly generous spread to start. There were homemade tortilla chips, two kinds of salsa, red radish, lime, serrano chile, chopped onion, and fresh cilantro. The tortilla chips were truly the best I have ever had. You could tell they were homemade, fresh, and made with care. They paired beautifully with the salsas, which were flavorful and balanced.
One of the things we loved most was the open kitchen. You could see the ladies making fresh tortillas by hand, the chefs cooking and grilling, and you could smell the incredible aromas of the food as it was being prepared. It added so much to the experience and made everything feel authentic and special.
We ordered the goat ribs and the grilled pork. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and paired perfectly with the freshly made tortillas. The meal also came with soup and beans, and we truly enjoyed every single part of it. Everything tasted comforting, well seasoned, and thoughtfully prepared.
We were so impressed that we ended up ordering two additional goat rib meals to take back to the ship for Viviana and our dining room server, Aman. We asked Arturo to make sure everything was packed the same way it was served to us in the restaurant, and he did so with great care and attention. Both of them truly enjoyed this special takeout treat, which made the experience even more meaningful for us.
The best part of our visit was Arturo’s service. He was unbelievably attentive and kind. He did not miss a beat. We never had to ask for anything. The moment something was running low, whether it was onions, cilantro, chips, salsa, or tortillas, he noticed right away and brought more without us saying a word. We were so impressed by his attention to detail and genuine care for his guests.
My husband and I left with very full bellies and grateful hearts. This meal was the perfect way to end our journey, and we would absolutely return and recommend Guadalajara Restaurant to anyone visiting Ensenada.
