Billy Goat Tavern is a true Chicago classic. This spot is a time machine to a wonderul past Chicago, we are lucky to have it the same as its always been. Of course, who can forget SNL from 40 plus years ago when they did their Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger skit. We walked in and they were super friendly and helpful. Of course we went with the Double Cheeseburger, and it was delicious. Even the pricing was very reasonable. You have to stop in for the Double Cheeseburger, you will love this Chicago classic, and while you enjoy the delicious Cheeseburger take in the rich history of the Billy Goat!

Found it by accident. One of the best nights of the trip.

First time in Chicago, freezing, snow coming down, just looking for somewhere to eat.

Pulled up Google Maps and stumbled across Billy Goat Tavern. Had no idea where it even was until I realized it was tucked underneath.

Walked down and thought, what is this place?

Turns out, it’s exactly the kind of place you hope to find.

Just a classic burger, done right, in a spot that’s been doing it for decades. That’s the whole formula and it works perfectly.

Sometimes simple is just better and Billy Goat proves that every single time.

The vibe is raw, old school Chicago to the bone.

You feel the history the second you walk in.

If you’re visiting Chicago and want something real, skip the fancy spots for one night and find this place. You’ll thank yourself.

Get the Obama burger! I did an order to pick up and struggled to find the staircase that brings you down to another part of the city at first. I was visiting for a conference and not sure of the area, but I’m glad I stuck it out and found it (I added a photo in my review of the stairway to look for!)

The burger was phenomenal! If you like a fried egg on a burger, this place can’t be beat. Plus it has a fun atmosphere and cool history.

Great old school vibe. The bar tender was incredibly sweet and welcoming. The grill smelled amazing. The merch was good. The house branded beers were better!
Loved finding this place by accident and hanging out for an hour.

Sometimes you gotta hit up the classics! The original Billy Tavern is across from our hotel, so we headed under to hit up the burgers ! A couple of goat classic drinks and the “it’s a Chicago handshake” that literally no one from Chicago could explain to me. It’s Jeppson’s Malört, lol. Not Chicago’s best work. But the Billy Goat was a great experience!

I flew over 1000 miles to try this place and I was not disappointed! The menu is straightforward, and the burgers are fresh. The combination of meat, cheese, and bun produces a classic burger flavor that every other burger should strive for.

Somehow landed here and let me tell you…the burger was SO good! I was originally going to stick with a single patty, but went with the double and couldn’t be happier with that choice. Everything is made fresh to order—one cashier running the counter while the chef is back there flipping burgers to perfection.

The menu is short and sweet, which makes ordering super easy. They also have a little topping station with extras like pickles, onions, and ketchup so you can dress it up how you like.

Since I’m not local, it took me a minute to find the place. Tip: keep an eye out for the signage on the lower level—it’s easy to miss if you’re not looking closely.

This spot is honestly in a category of its own. If you’re in the area, definitely worth the stop!

Sometimes it’s all in the simplicity. The simplicity of this cheeseburger is sublime and it makes sense why Billy Goat Tavern is a Chicago legend. No frills in the best way and you get to self serve your own toppings. Worth the stop. It’s underneath Michigan Ave so make sure you head down the stairs.

Without a doubt, Billy Goat Tavern is one of Chicago’s most famous burger joints! Founded over 90 years ago, it still serves legendary cheeseburgers today. Of course, there are countless burger places in the Windy City, but this one has cultivated a unique reputation over decades among politicians, athletes, celebrities, and journalists. Don’t let the location or exterior fool you—inside, they serve freshly made (cheese) burgers that you can customize to your liking with pickles, lettuce, sauces, and onions. The double cheeseburger isn’t exactly cheap and isn’t comparable to gourmet burgers, but it’s solid and delicious – ‘nuff said! Just go in and soak up the atmosphere! Down here, you’ll quickly forget the glamour of the shops along Michigan Avenue and realize that a good burger can be everyone’s favorite.

I love this place and make it a point to visit at least once every time I’m in Chicago. Great cheeseburgers (get the double) and hotdogs with self-serve condiments – including an endless amount of sliced pickles… they are delicious. The bar has a good selection of beer and liquor, with historical memorabilia hanging throughout. The overall vibe is very casual, and the place is typically a bit on the crowded side (tolerable). Fun place, good atmosphere, legendary.
