For many decades Bill’s hot dogs were the best Chicago hot dogs in the Evanston area IMHO and a place that I always visited while in town. Served with mustard, relish, onions, fresh tomato slices and celery seed/salt, they always tasted exactly the same. The frank was tasty and the bun was always steamed. So delicious. The thing is, after he sold the hot dog stand a few years ago, the flavors and textures were not the same. While the new version was reasonably tasty it wasn’t the classic Bill’s hot dog. . Nothing lasts forever. The new ownership has maintained the low prices, cook-to-order and good value for the money in a bare bones environment. I’m giving the pickup-only environment four stars because what you see is what you get and I’m sure having no indoor dining is keeping the prices down.

Bill’s Drive-In has that old-school fast-food charm that feels straight out of classic Chicago. The hot dogs are simple and satisfying, with that perfect snap, and the burgers are juicy without being overcomplicated. It’s the kind of place where you grab your food quickly and enjoy it without any fuss. The vibe is casual and nostalgic, making it easy to appreciate the straightforward menu and solid flavors. If you’re craving a traditional drive-in style bite, Bill’s delivers exactly that.

If I could’ve selected a half star. I would’ve. That would’ve been generous. As a customer of Bill’s since the 1960s, this was one of the places where me as a young child and my parents would stop for dinner on Wednesdays on the way to bible study. Times and seasons do change and I guess this is just one of those seasons.

Unfortunately since the original owners of Bill’s made the decision to sell the establishment, it has been downhill ever since.

Our last visit was this past Friday. We ordered our staple of a hot dog, a double cheeseburger along with fries and a shake. The best part of the meal was the fries (mid tasting) and the shake. The sandwiches were horrible!. The meat of both the burger and hot dog are definitely not the same. Definitely not meat!!

I wish the new owners would’ve tried to preserve the nostalgia of the initial establishment instead of trying to cut corners. We can definitely tell that’s what’s happened. It’s very disappointing. We will not be returning.

Thanks to the original owners of Bill’s for the excellent food and service that was provided in past.years We enjoyed it while it lasted. The original Bill’s drive in will never be forgotten.

So sad when former local staples get sold and go downhill. New owners don’t appreciate what made the place tick. Decreasing food quality and increasing prices isn’t it, plus the customer service is at an all-time low. Time to suffer the doors and add another CVS or Starbucks

Classic joint here! Awesome burgers and friendly staff. Grilled onions for only 25¢. Everything made to order right in front of you but super quick. Super thin patties but a double makes it worth it. Parking lot holds about 10-15 cars, and there is 1 pic nic table out back. A single cheese burger with fries and a double hamburger for $13.37 has me and my cholesterol elevated!

It was so nice to stop at a place with both my sons that I use to go with my Mom and brothers back in the late 60’s and 70’s. It’s been years since ai have eaten here, but just the ambience was worth it.

Bill’s Drive-In has been around for a very long time and even been featured in a Chicago Hot Dog documentary, so it is a reasonable to assume, “Don’t change a thing”.

Sadly, it has changed hands and the quality of the meal doesn’t commiserate to what made Bill’s so famous.

The hot dog tasted old and somehow waterlogged. Chicago hot dogs are supposed to have a snap to their casing but sadly, it was more mushy than anything else. The bun, while not being a poppyseed bun is forgivable – it was clearly steamed in a water bath that is too hot – probably another reason the hot dog is mushy. The bun is old and mushy as well. The topping for a Chicago Dog is neon green relish, onion, celery salt, tomato, pickle and a sport pepper. The relish is the type of relish that you see at a picnic. The topping looked like they sat around and wilted.

Sadly, I wish Bill’s was better than it is now – but times have changed and it is time to move on from this place.

Fresh from a brief closure this restaurant is back with renewed energy coupled with the same great dogs and burgers. Let’s all start packing the doors this weekend. Just like the old days. Buy a tshirt and spread that south Evanston cred.
