Big Wong BBQ, Hobart, Australia – Reviews, Ratings, Tips and Why …
Reviews
The service was friendly and prompt, and every dish we ordered paired well with the duck. Portions were generous, and the herbs and spices came through without being overwhelming. If you’re a duck fan, this place is a winner — we’ll definitely be back!

We went on Sunday (24.08.2025) around 4:55pm. The sign at the front said it was open, so we went inside and waited 5–7 min. A staff member (looked like a chef) finally came out, just stared at us, and when we asked if we could order, he said “we open at 5pm.” Even though the sign said open, he took our order with no greeting or welcome.
After about 15 minutes my husband’s roasted duck and BBQ pork fried rice arrived. It tasted okay but the portion size was small and had very little pork. A few minutes later my meal (chicken fried rice) was served, and both dishes were literally dropped on the table with no respect or basic service.
We felt uncomfortable, finished quickly, and left without even drinking water. We’ve been to many restaurants around Hobart — even when the food wasn’t great, the service was still polite. Sadly, here the service was extremely rude and unprofessional.
Large nice chunks of egg mixed with BBQ pork and shrimp.
I recommended this place to some colleagues too, absolutely fantastic!
Unfortunately we had a terrible experience.
It was a Tuesday night, not overly busy but they only had one girl (she was lovely) on at the front who was doing table service, welcoming guests, answering the phone and reheating and serving food.
Alarm bells should of rang straight up when they had hand written notes on each table to “rate them 5* and receive a free can of cordial”….
Special fried rice was very good but came out 25 mins before mains..
Main chicken dish as per picture could probably still of laid an egg, it was that raw, and cold! The chicken was not reheated enough in the microwave! as the lady at the front was unable to undertake the 1000 jobs at once. The sauce for the chicken also came out 10mins later
We ordered the Spicy Stir-Fried Pork Belly With Chilli.. came out looking and tasting a lot like chicken, well that’s if you could taste anything over the extremely large amount of ginger in it. In fact a ginger root would have less ginger than that dish. It’s also has just half a chunk of onion thrown in it and like 300g of rough large chunks of garlic.. practically uneatable and very disappointing. Showed no care or passion from the “chief”
I’m very conversed in Chinese food and the mains would be the worst I’ve had in Australia. Fried rice wasn’t bad 6/10
Also disappointing the careless attitude when honest feed back was give, with no partial or full refund offered.
Very well tenderised and well spiced meats. Spiced sauces. Chilli levels that don’t hold your hand.
Would recommend if you live to eat rather than eating to live.
5/5
And I loved my dish – shredded tofu with crisp veggies on a bed of Singapore noodles! I appreciated the authentic curry taste, rather than being watered down.
Will definitely be back as there’s something for everyone here and the prices were reasonable.
Authentic Flavors: The restaurant stays true to traditional roots, particularly with its roast meats. Reviewers frequently praise the succulent roast duck and crispy BBQ pork, which are often cited as some of the most authentic in the area.
Diverse Menu: There is a various range of food options available, spanning from classic noodle soups and congee to an extensive selection of stir-fried dishes. Whether you want a light bite or a full banquet-style meal, the menu caters to all appetites.
Excellent Value: One of the biggest draws is the good price value. The portions are notably generous for the cost, making it an ideal spot for students or families looking for a high-quality meal that is budget-friendly.
No-Frills Atmosphere: The setting is casual and straightforward, focusing entirely on the quality of the food and efficient service, which adds to its charm as a local neighborhood favorite.
Overall, Big Wong BBQ delivers a consistently high-quality meal that proves you don’t need to spend a lot to enjoy truly authentic Chinese cuisine. It is a must-visit for anyone who prioritizes flavor and value.
