Big South SLC
⭐️ 1.5 out of 5 stars

Despite high social media hype, Big South SLC struggles with both preparation and authenticity. Long wait times, lack of readiness at opening, and uninspired flavors make this Southern-style eatery a major letdown.

After hearing the buzz about Big South SLC on social media, I was eager to experience what many described as authentic Southern comfort food. Unfortunately, my visit was disappointing from the very beginning.

Upon arriving at the food truck posted opening time, I found that staff were not yet ready to serve guests. Service didn’t begin for nearly 30 mins and the delay carried over into the meal service itself.

When I finally sat down to eat an enjoy some good comfort food, the quality did not justify the wait. The cornbread lacked both flavor and moisture, leaving it dry and difficult to enjoy. The candied yams are canned and under-seasoned, missing the warmth and sweetness expected from homemade Southern sides. The macaroni and cheese had an unexpected tang, reminiscent of vinegar, rather than the creamy, comforting flavor it should have delivered.

The chicken wings were coated in a Louisiana-style hot sauce mixed with lemon pepper seasoning — a combination that is more store-bought than authentically crafted.

As someone who values culinary authenticity and Southern tradition, I found the experience underwhelming. True Southern cooking should feel soulful and made with care and most of all LOVE — a balance of seasoning, patience, and heart. While the concept behind Big South SLC is promising, the execution falls short. Bringing the flavors of the South to Utah requires more than canned ingredients and bottled sauces; it requires the genuine craft that defines the cuisine.

Nice people and Southern hospitality but the food was just not it …….Hands-down I have to say as a food critic. Louisiana has the best food in the country when it comes to southern food.

As you can see below, I didn’t even finish my food. I wrote the review after tasting a bite of everything.

Pros:
• Friendly
• Ambitious concept for bringing Southern flavors to Utah

Cons:
• Not ready at opening; nearly one-hour delay
• Long food wait times
• Dry, flavorless cornbread
• Canned or artificial-tasting sides
• Overreliance on bottled sauces

Final Verdict:

Big South SLC has potential but fails to capture the heart of true Southern cuisine. Authenticity comes from care, patience, and flavor built from scratch — qualities missing here. For now, the restaurant feels more like a social media trend than a genuine taste of the South.

⭐️ 1.5 out of 5 stars — Disappointing. Needs major improvement in preparation, timing, and authenticity.

As someone originally from California with a deep appreciation for Southern soul food, I have to say I was quite disappointed with my experience here. You can easily tell when food is fresh versus pre-made or reheated from the store, and unfortunately, that was the case here.

I ordered twice, trying different dishes each time because I genuinely love to support Black-owned businesses. However, the quality just didn’t meet my expectations. The catfish was overly seasoned, and the chicken wings were not enjoyable at all. As for the mac and cheese, it really missed the mark.

Given what I received, I felt that the overall experience did not justify the price. It’s truly unfortunate because I was hoping for something special.

This southern food truck is great. Be sure to follow them on Instagram to see what their hours and availability are.

You definitely need to come early if you want to get the oxtails because they sell out real quick. I got the fried catfish with Mac n cheese and dirty rice. The catfish was fried very well and the fish was very flaky and not fishy at all. The dirty rice and Mac n cheese were also good.

They seem to have run out of things as time goes on so it’s more of what they have left if you come later. The staff was very nice and the food can take some time to wait.

If you are looking for a delicious comfort meal, I highly recommend seeing if the Big South food truck is open! Hands down one of the BEST mac and cheeses I have ever had! Deven after driving home the food was still hot and delicious!

I don’t know what’s taken me so long to write this review but I visited this AMAZING establishment earlier this year, April 2025. When I was doing research for places to eat I saw the area code of the business being from my home state of MS, and I knew my mom and I had to try it (twice ). And please believe that the food and customer service did not disappoint! The owner and his wife have a true gem on their hands. We will definitely visit again in the future.

This place did not live up to the hype. I don’t get it. Starting with the first impression. The area is unwelcoming. No awning to keep customers out of the sun. No tables. Just a run down looking trailer and cooler. The owner was too busy with his friends to acknowledge customers or to even help his employees. The employees going in and out of the kitchen with the same rubber gloves. Not switching out for clean gloves before coming back to the food.

The food. Underwhelming and overpriced to say the least. The chopped cheese looks nothing like the photos they advertise. It was small, too sweet, dry. Mashed potatoes were bland and had a weird texture like they supplement with instant. Pot roast was soupy, mushy, flavorless. Mac n cheese was mushy, old, needed seasoning. The candied yams were so sweet, overly spiced and runny. The cornbread tasted like raw batter and nothing special. We won’t be returning.

When I say that Big South lives up to the hype, I mean it! Ordered the oxtail plate with collard greens, corn bread, a side of candied yams, and a plate of naked wings, with mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and more corn bread.

First off, the service was phenomenal; the staff was patient, kind, and attentive. There is a bit of a (well deserved) wait, but I got the food exactly when they told me it would be ready.

Now the food…I am always hesitant with hyped places or places featured on socials because they often don’t live up to the expectations – that was NOT the case at Big South. The oxtail fell off the bone and was on a bed of rice that soaked up the sauce and was amazing on its own. I asked for naked wings – they were juicy, well seasoned, and crispy. All the sides were delicious but do not to skip the corn bread!

Food was decent. A little on the salty side but I’ll never go there again. I work at a local business across the street. Damarkus one of the owners of big south came in for a service. I gave him a really good discount so he told me to come get a plate of food the cost $26 but he says he will give me a good discount so I go over and get a plate which he charges me $30 for and says hes paying the other half to take care of me. Lol who pays $60 for a lunch plate from a food truck or even $30 which I did but will not return. Damarkus is a liar and a con

Big South certainly knows what they’re doin’, y’all. I grew up in the South, and this meal took me straight back to my childhood. The fried catfish was cooked to perfection — crispy on the outside, flaky and tender on the inside. The hush puppies? Hands down, best I’ve ever had! The collard greens were absolutely packed with flavor with big juicy pieces of ham. You can taste the love in every bite. If you’re looking for real-deal Southern soul food, this is it.
