The pizza itself is delicious with a nice dough and fairly thick crust (not too thick, not too thin, just the right balance). I would suggest you ask them how you would like it cooked, as that’s what we have done and they have almost never missed! (Usually order the pizza with the crust cooked extra on the bottom) The sauce is also very good, which I feel many people don’t detail in their reviews. It’s not overly sweet (which is a big no-no for me, not my preference, especially if you’ve tried NY pizza- many pizza places there offer a pizza with a sauce more on the acidic side, not sweet – or at least that’s my preference), and not overly acidic. It achieves that correct balance between sweet and acidic which makes the sauce a good pizza sauce to me. (Just for reference, Google it and you’ll see that authentic Bronx, NY pizza typically uses pizza sauce more on the acidic end). And, personally, a bad pizza sauce can ruin the pizza experience for me. It’s important to get that right. I typically only prefer a marinara-style pizza sauce on the sweeter side when I’m having mozzarella sticks or other fried appetizers, for example. Now, the cheese is just fantastic. There’s tons of it (like NY pizza has) and it’s all over the pizza, and it has a great flavor! Also, if you order toppings, you most likely will not be disappointed. We ordered veggies on top and they all tasted fresh and there was plenty on there. It’s a nice big pizza pie that comes in a pretty big box and the slices are also pretty big! So be prepared to eat and/or have leftovers if you get a large! Overall, I would highly recommend trying Big Sergios as they make excellent pizza!! I can’t speak for the other items on their menu, but their pizza is definitely where it’s at.
I would also like to add, however, that the atmosphere/interior of the restaurant isn’t bad, I just wouldn’t venture to say it’s great. It’s a small little casual pizza shop, similar to what you’d see if you walked down the sidewalks in NY and entered a pizza shop, though perhaps slightly larger. So, I would say perhaps making the inside a little more spacious and updating some of the interior a bit to make it look a little more modern couldn’t hurt and would be a positive (imo), just to make it feel more inviting inside. However, like I said, it does kind of feel like you’re walking into a pizza shop off the streets in NY. So that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Still, I would update the inside of the restaurant a bit. (That being said, keep it modern, casual, if that makes sense. Haha!).
Also wanna mention the lady at the counter was super friendly and courteous and helped out when I ordered my pizzas here. She was smiley and super sweet, and I enjoyed talking with her at the counter. She also gave me napkins and plates which was super appreciated as it was a take-out order last time I was there! In addition, she offered a helping hand out the door. I mean, come on. Can you ask for friendlier service? So I had no issues with customer service from my experience.
Please try this pizza place if you live anywhere near Apex, NC and are looking for New York style pizza. I find it very difficult to give ratings on things because there are just too many variables involved, but if I had to rate it, it’s around a 4 or 4.5/5. It’s very difficult for me to give out 5 star ratings, as things would have to be near perfection, but this place is well worth trying out and I don’t say that lightly. Highly recommend. What have you got to lose? If you don’t like it, try another place. But this, to me, is very close to NY pizza. Thank me later. 🙂
We used to order from here a lot. The last couple times we ordered the quality of their pizza, has gone downhill dramatically.
The last time we ordered, the bottom of the pizza was burnt in some spots, and then almost raw and other spots.
This time the two topping pepperoni mushroom pizza. When my husband inspected the box in the store, he noted that it only had an it only had about half the amount of toppings that it normally would have had. The mushrooms were very sparse and definitely did not cover the whole pizza. I would say they didn’t even cover 3/4 of the pizza.
We ordered our second pizza half cheese / and the pop other half was pepperoni and mushroom. Please note as you can see on the picture provided below that the pepperoni and mushroom came nowhere near the middle of the pizza.
When my husband picked up the pizza, he questioned the cashier about the pizzas. The cashier stated.” that’s normal.” I guess that’s the new normal. The quality definitely has gone downhill.
My wife, my son, and I arrived and placed our order. We were not informed about the waiting time, and since there was only one person waiting, we assumed it wouldn’t take long. However, it ended up taking around 40 minutes. After about 30 minutes, my wife asked about our order and was told it would be ready soon. A few minutes later, I went to check again, and one of the employees told me the pizzas were still in the oven and that I needed to wait.
At that moment, another employee — apparently the cook or pizza maker — reacted in a very rude and aggressive way. He started yelling things like “You have to wait,” “We’re not machines,” and even insulted me, saying “Go to hell.” His behavior was completely unacceptable and threatening, especially in front of my family.
We decided to leave the restaurant immediately.
I’m sharing this experience not to discredit the food — which is excellent — but to warn others. If you plan to dine in or are in a hurry, please be aware that one of their employees has serious behavior issues, and the atmosphere might not be safe or respectful for families.
If you’ve never eaten here before, come by and have a taste of this food. You definitely get a large quantity of food for your buck. The calzone is enormous for just $6.95 and The Taste is phenomenal. The Philly cheesesteak I had was warm and melted and delicious and it was gone before I got to my house. The Slice of Cheesecake was some of the best desert I’ve eaten in a very long time. It wasn’t overly sweet, like most desserts. I also saw that they serve Gyros I did not get one but we will get one next time. But don’t take just my word for it. Look at some of my images I’ve taken.
I will be stopping back by this restaurant more frequently as work increases in Cary.
