I saw Big J’s bbq on google maps across the street from where i’m spending my 34 hour reset. It was Saturday, and they are closed. So I decided that I would eat here on Sunday.
Sunday came, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are repeat world champions! That has nothing to do with this review. It just that it makes me happy.
I phoned in my order. Then went to pick it up. As I entered the restaurant, I immediately notice the lack of smell. When you walk into a BBQ joint, you should smell BBQ. I did not smell barbecue or anything else. That was somewhat concerning.
I ordered a lot. Beef brisket with mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. Beef ribs with collard greens and cabbage. A smothered turkey wing. Carolina tangy gold chicken wings. And a slice of sweet potato pie.
The sweet potato pie has no crust. First time i’ve ever had a crust-less sweet potato pie. It was good, but it has a very mild burnt flavor to it.
Believe it or not, my favorite item that I ordered was the carolina tangy gold chicken wings. They were perfectly cooked and doused in lots of honey sweet and spicy sauce. I would highly recommend them.
The beef ribs were good. They taste it like they were only lightly seasoned. And they were not cooked on a grill. That’s weird, because if you look at these photos, you can see seasoning all over the ribs. But you can’t taste it. They were super tender and fell right off the bone. But they had no smoky flavor at all.
They came with a home made BBQ sauce that is pretty good. I can taste the honey used to make the BBQ sauce.
The cabbage had little to no flavor. Maybe they used some of the beef drippings to saute the cabbage. But that’s it.
The collard greens were good. I’ve never eaten collard greens with no smoked pork or turkey in them. So these are probably healthier than i’m used to.
The smothered turkey wing came on a bed of rice. With a savory sauce, and lots of grease covering everything. The Turkey wing itself was well cooked and very tender. But like everything else, it was only very lightly seasoned.
Some of the rice is undercooked. And there are pools of grease on my plate. The rice has absorbed all of that grease flavor.
The macaroni and cheese tasted okay.
The mashed potatoes tasted excellent! Creamy soft delicious and perfectly seasoned. The mashed potatoes didn’t come with gravy, but that didn’t matter. They tasted great!
The beef brisket was a little disappointing. As with the beef ribs, this item was not cooked on a grill. Tender but barely seasoned. With no smoky flavor.
I would give this place two and a half stars. If I could. Bit overall, I’m rating Big J’s BBQ at 3 stars. The chicken wings and mashed potatoes were top notch. Everything else was average at best. The only thing that gets 0 stars is that grease soaked rice.

I visited BigJ’s Southern Cooking and Catering today. Jeremiah loves what he does… his experience working at restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory, Logan’s Roadhouse and Longhorn gave him an opportunity to manage kitchens in the corporate environment where they strive for consistency on a grand scale. But Jeremiah has his own vision for a simple menu serving southern cooking and unique dishes.
The top selling sides being Mac and Cheese, Collard Greens… And entrees being Beef Ribs and Brisket.

Today Jeremiah was cooking a Banana Pudding! On the grill was his Mac Burger… check out the photo! If you need catering call Jeremiah for any event.

This was the best food I’ve probably ever eaten I almost cried when I finished my food because it was so good. The worker was so nice and had amazing service! The bathroom smelt so good and it was a nice area! I will definitely be going back. Also I got the garlic honey wings with fries and that was incredible. I also tried the brisket and it was delicious it literally melted in my mouth and was so flavorful! Don’t even get me started on the Mac and cheese because that was phenomenal.

My first time patronizing this restaurant and it was such a disappointment. This review is not meant to shame the establishment. It is meant to provide feedback from a patron’s perspective and use as a tool for improvement. I ordered meatloaf cabbage and yams. The meatloaf was by far the worst I’ve ever tasted. It was crumbled and falling apart and was smothered in BBQ sauce. I have never eaten meatloaf drench in BBQ sauce. The appearance made me think of dog food. The cabbage had way too much pepper that I could not eat it. I left the restaurant still hungry and didn’t want to spend any additional money elsewhere. Money definitely wasted.

Wish I could give more stars. I had the privilege of meeting the owner. Extremely nice gentleman who stands behind his food. The oxtails were top notch and really flavorful. Mac and cheese real and homemade, not out of a box. This is a local business that will always have my business when in town.

When I think of beef Brisket coming from a BBQ place it should be smoked. The brisket is definitely baked. It’s seasond well but come on BBQ joint. The Mac and cheese is bland it reminds me of KFC. The candied yams weren’t sweet enough. Candied yams has a syrup from the sugar and butter. The syrup is darkened by the seasonings , vanilla, cinnamon, even nutmeg along with brown sugar achieves the rich hue and flavor. The greens were seasoned nice. The rice was seasoned okay. The gravy was a no. You guys use way to much sage! Salt, pepper, onions, maybe bell peppers seasons a good gravy. The green beans were over cooked to mush. The green beans were well seasoned. The cabbage was pretty good. Would I make an effort to stop back, no. But if you’re in the area, stop by and try them out.

My husband and I have been looking for a good bbq place for a very long time. He loves brisket and I love ribs. I have to tell you this place should have lines out of the door! The food is outstanding, its cooked with love, its fresh, and flavorful. I got the ribs with mac and cheese and collard greens. My husband got the brisket with max and cheese and fries. We also got the half smoked chicken. The brisket was thick and juicy, and a huge portion as well. The ribs, oh my word, the ribs were so tender and juicy and perfectly seasoned, I was chewing on the bone it was so good. The greens were perfectly seasoned as well, they were so flavorful. Over all everything was delicious and so appreciated. Its hard to find good places that are worth the money. This place is worth every penny spent. We will be back.

This place was a great randomly picked place for breakfast. We had omelets. You pick from a list of fresh ingredients that you can have fixed in a variety of ways. The portions are generous and the price is very reasonable. I would definitely stop again when traveling through.
