In 1968 the late Rev. John A. “Big John” Stephens opened Big John’s Alabama Barbeque in East Tampa, Florida at 5707 N 40th Street. “Big John,” came to Tampa from Eufaula, Alabama. He with his family came to the area with goals of being an entrepreneur but most importantly a man of God. He obtained and exceeded that goal, and “Big John’s” is still in existence today, 58 years later. Big John ran the business for 26 years until his demise in 1994. Big John’s Alabama BBQ is known for its open pit barbeque grill and made to order service, their signature sauce and other specialties.

On behalf of Heaven Sent Roofing, we’ve been enjoying Big John’s Alabama Barbecue since childhood, and it continues to be one of our all-time favorite local spots. The barbecue is consistently flavorful, the meats are tender and well smoked, and the sides bring that true homemade, Southern comfort feel.

The food was fantastic. The flavors on point. The chicken breast was juicy. The pork was not shredded but chopped instead. The ribs had a great crust, yet still moist and tender. Definitely will return. Only thing I would recommend is to put napkins on the table and to toast the bread slices they serve with the meal.

I love me some BBQ and this place is delicious, it’s always perfect, flavors is always the same, I’m not into smoke flavoring if you know what I mean by smoke flavor.
This place it’s only open until 6pm, and for the holidays get really crazy for Thanksgiving and Christmas, they’re always smiling and very nice.
They offer dessert like pies and red velvet cake , get ready because some days you would have to do a line to get your food, but just saying it’s worth it on my opinion half rack goes for $16 to $18 dollars and it’s enough to share with 3 people, it comes accompanied with bread and BBQ sauce on the side or on top.
They have sausages, chicken, ribs, pulled pork, brisket and many sides dishes in their menu ,like corn, beans , coleslaw and I think three different BBQ sauces.
And you can get your big orders for your parties, uhh not forgetting they do ice tea as well..

My husband and I came here for a quick lunch date. We ordered the thin end dinner with a large sweet tea bucket and a chicken dinner with a large Arnold Palmer bucket. We paid about $50 for the two of us. So the prices are definitely higher but the meal was good. The service is great. We sat in and ate and the mood was chill. But it’s very busy. I would definitely recommend.

I stopped here by accident thinking it was another barbecue place that I used to go to when I lived in Tampa, but I’m so glad I found this place. Everything was delicious, which is usually rare at most barbecue places. I usually get good meats and OK sides but the sides here are amazing, especially the collard greens. The price was fair & so were the portions. It’s not a place I would sit in but I will be returning next time I’m in town for to go.

Very good ribs. Great smoke flavor. The restaurant is what you would expect from a BBQ joint. The service was excellent and pleasant. What keeps this from being five stars is the mediocre sides. The coleslaw was very bland and the beans had no smoke flavor at all.

The moment you walk in you can smell the smokey aroma of oak wood and hear the sound of beef and chicken being chopped behind the counter! The meats are amazingly delicious and seasoned very well, meats are pork & beef, chicken, sausage, ribs and burnt ends or thin ends as they have them listed on the menu. The sides are also delicious as they include traditional sides such as coleslaw, baked beans, collard greens,corn on the cob, both macaroni and potatoe salads. There’s family meal specials for big crowds and also whole entrees such as whole slab ribs, whole chicken and beef by the pound! Desserts such as cakes and pies are available too by the slice or whole. What amazed me were the portion sizes, enough for the largest appetites and they even have a kids menu! We will definitely be returning ASAP!! Great Job Big John’s, you knocked it out the park today!!

I love this place. One of *the best* local BBQ places. Their sauces (my favorite is the sweet BBQ- My husband loves their Mild sauce) are Top Tier, same can be said about their man n cheese & baked beans. Get the brisket! Always perfectly smoked, absolutely delicious. Its worth the price. The staff is always friendly, food is always fresh.
