The main event here is the battered fries, and of course, the ice cream! Great service! The burgers were large, but could be improved. The meat needs seasoning and the buns need toasted.
On the bright side; there is a lot of seating and parking here and is a great place for groups.

Just Tried the New Baby Burger today and honestly…WOW. It tastes just like I remember. Simple, classic, and done right. Brought back a lot of good memories. Glad to see Big Jim’s reviving this classic burger! YUM : )

The original Big Jim’s is cramped and grungy – like an old drive used to be. The Hood River location is slick, clean, and bright.
The food is drive in burgers, and definitely more expensive than fast food burgers. However, compared with an in-and-out Big Jim’s is way better quality and portions.
It was worth the drive into town off the freeway. It’s not gourmet by any measure, but it was good food in a really positive environment.
BTW fries were the best part!

I like how clean and bright it is inside. The burgers are big but there’s nothing special about them. They are decidedly average and the patties taste like frozen Sysco patties. The fries are better than the burger.
Given the quality, the price seems high. Almost $20 for a burger combo is insane.

Food was ok, but when received order burgers were too moist/soggy. Apparently this is something that alot of people have experienced, not sure if its because it takes too long to get the order to the table or due to the to fact that they use wrappers with reflective material as where the original ranch owners used thinner paper packaging for their food. Or Possibly both, it would help if they could get the food out faster when its fresh off the grill as opposed to waiting untill you have a tray full of food thats been sitting for various minutes while the rest of the order is being completed for 2-4 people this was something the ranch was known for, the appearance of hot food that just been on a flat top or in the fryer. Also if they added fry sauce as a condiment option, as thats something that people have referenced the ranch had that big Jim’s doesn’t. If they could improve on any of these things; I believe could better the quality of experience customers have when they go.

I’ve been to Big Jim’s 5 times since it opened last year and every single time it has taken so long to get my food. The last time my girl and I sat there for around 30 minutes only to find out they had lost the order. What did we order, you ask? Something complicated?
It was an order of Sweet Potato Fries to go.
I’ve waited around 10 minutes in the drive thru on two seperate occasions and again these are basic orders.
And just now, against my better judgement, I went there once again. This time I wasn’t even acknowleged as I stood at the front counter. There were probably 3-4 cooks and 3 counter people and neither one said “I’ll be right with you.” This is just basic customer service stuff. I stood there for a bit and as the minutes ticked on I realized they weren’t even going to acknowledge I was there.
As I turned around to leave, I saw people waiting for their to-go orders with a look on their faces that reminded me of family members waiting outside a gulag hoping to hear that their loved ones were ok.
How’s the food? It’s ok, it’s decent. But it’s not worth the wait.

I have fond memories of The Ranch from my youth and was sad that it shut down a few years ago, another pandemic victim. I was happy to see that someone had bought and was renovating it. When I heard it would be a Big Jim’s I got excited. I’ve been to their restaurant in The Dalles a few times over the decades and have a favorable view of it.
I was obviously not the only one looking forward to it opening. I got there at about a quarter to five on a Saturday afternoon and the line was almost to the front door. One of their two registers wasn’t working, but I expected a new business like this might be experiencing some growing pains so no problem.
The wait was a bit on the long side but they were slammed so no surprises there. It was worth waiting for. My luau burger (with ham and pineapple) was amazing. I love the sweet and savory elements. My waffle cut sweet potato fries were good, although I may ask for less salt next time. My peanut butter shake was also very good. Thick and just the right amount of peanut butter.
The facilities were all clean and tidy, but I would expect that from a business in its first week of operation. The service was friendly and prompt. I recommend this place to anyone looking for an old school small town drive in burger joint. I will definitely be back.

We visited the Hood River restaurant for the first time and everything was exceptional. Great staff and excellent food. Their TRex burger was HUGE.

We just discovered this little hole in the wall. They have THE BEST shakes! They only have one size,but they need bigger cups!! The flavors of ice cream are fantastic. The fried chicken sandwich and burger with onion rings was delicious. I would definitely recommend this place! We’ll be back!

It pains me to write this but my back is against the wall. The food is great and the staff is always very friendly and hospitable but I’d rather be met with bad service and if it means properly fulfilling orders. I tipped 5 dollars on a 30 dollar order and requested two extra fry sauces, an additional one dollar upcharge. I couldnt wait to get home and enjoy my onion rings when I opened the bag and found there was no sauce at all. Why so stingy with the sauce? It should just be included with the purchase of a side. Get these employees in the habit of giving it away instead of nickel and diming people for it and then forgetting to give it to them. Like I said I hate to do it but this is the second time this has happened now. Mad disappointing.
