I would recommend this restaurant!
Now, for the nitty gritty. Upon entering Big City Roadhouse, we were met with a dimly lit restaurant with a quaint, yet regal atmosphere. This is a place where you can fit in wearing either boots, flip flops or dockers, and you won’t feel out of place. Our server, Eva, was polite, knowledgeable and ever attentive.
While eating, my dinner companion put the dining experience perfectly. Every bite was a surprise. My philosophy with any establishment is that if they can’t do the basics right, they’ve got no business doing anything. This philosophy has me always trying the most basic items first, and what’s more basic than tater tots? Now, imagine my surprise when the duck fat tater tots were the most flavorful and exciting tots I have EVER had. The chipotle sauce and feta toppings along with the fresh herbs were a wonderful addition to the tots, to be sure, but even a “naked” tot was a shock to the mouth. There was a richness and perfect amount of saltiness to the tots that couldn’t be present without the duck fat, and it was very evident that more care and thought was put into this simple dish than most bars are willing to put in.
After our tots were brought out, it wasn’t long before our drinks arrived. The missus got a margarita flight, which contained four of their signature margaritas. Each one was well crafted, not too strong but not overloaded with filler, and some with a fantastic and familiar tajin rim, and some salted. I myself ordered a Guiness, and I was pleased to find a place in Greeley that serves it on tap, not from a can. I was able to spy on the bartender while my drink was being made, and I was glad to find they not only poured my drink properly, but also let my drink sit for a few minutes to give the head a chance to settle.
The fish and chips were extremely crispy without being too crunchy, and extremely flavorful without being overpowering. The fish was flaky, meaty and perfectly cooked, while also being hearty enough to maintain form after being covered in malt vinegar. And yes, if you’re an enjoyer of fish and chips, this place, unlike many of the bars in Greeley, actually has malt vinegar for your fish and chips. The chips, which were served with both of our meals, were most definitely twice fried. They were crispy, airy, full flavored, and a sure mark that this restaurant treats its food with utmost care. This dish was also served with a green chile tartar sauce, which brought one more surprise on top of many others. It was well made, with the green chile not being a main stay, but being an addition to the tartar sauce, not the star of the show. The green chile brought with it a smokiness and full body of flavor that paired very well with the tanginess of the tartar sauce.
My dinner partner ordered the Devin-Ci sandwich, a sandwich made with soft rosemary sourdough, tomatoes, avocado, cucumber, ricotta, and a very flavorful pesto that was not skimped on. All of this worked wonderfully with the balsamic syrup, and made for a lighter sandwich that didn’t leave you feeling weighed down after eating it.
Now, the downsides. I’m a big boy, and I like big food, and the portions here are not the best. Not small by any means, and we left with fries in a box, but there wasn’t much of the main courses. The food was, I feel, fairly priced, but the drinks were a little bit on the expensive side. This isn’t the kind of bar you go to the get blitzed, but the kind you go to if you’re looking to catch a buzz and have some good food. And, as a sidenote to the portion sizes, this is one of the few circumstances where the quality of the food makes up for portion size which, is not by any means small, just not as much as a guy like me would like.
One of the highlights for me is the bartender, Andrea. She’s honestly one of the best in the business. Every time we come in, she makes amazing drinks that perfectly hit the spot. Beyond her skill, Andrea is super friendly and always makes us feel so welcome, which really adds to the experience.
If you visit, I highly recommend trying the Mr. Pribble Fries—they’re incredible! Also, the Fish & Chips are a must-have. Both are delicious and perfectly complement the great drinks Andrea whips up.
I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do. Give it a shot—you won’t regret it!
Check it out!
Andrea is AMAZING! The food was delicious, the space worked perfectly for us. They made yummy mocktails. The menu was made in theme to match the baby shower theme. Andrea went above and beyond on everything and even got a little gift for my niece. I highly recommend!
