He also provided food donations to all my movie productions. So many restaurants turned me away but not him. His generosity and support will never be forgotten.
Now the ono food. We usually start with appetizers fried calamari and fresh poke. My wife loves all their sandwiches. I tend to order the same thing every time.
Mamasan’s meatloaf with rice sprinkled with furikake. On occasion I get the hamburger steak. Everything on their menu is delicious. Aloha and Mahalo.
I am usually pretty patient, but my experience here was incredibly frustrating. I placed a takeout order in person and was told it would be 15 to 20 minutes. I ended up waiting for over an hour.
The Experience
Dishonest Timelines: Being told “just a few more minutes” multiple times while watching others get served is a major respect-of-time issue.
Lack of Leadership: When I asked to speak to management, the General Manager wasn’t even in the store to address the chaos.
Shoutout to Chris: I want to clarify that the lead server, Chris, was GREAT. He was professional, sympathetic, and went out of his way to facilitate a follow-up by asking the GM to call me.
The “Resolution” That Never Happened
The GM did eventually call me and offered to “make it right,” but claimed they needed to clear the solution with the store owner first. I was promised a return call the following day. Guess what? They never called.
Eggs Benedict: A Tasty Treat with a Slight Flaw
Opting for the classic Eggs Benedict, I was treated to a flavorful dish that hit the spot. The English muffin was toasted to perfection, and the hollandaise sauce was creamy and rich, adding a delightful touch to the overall experience. However, the poached eggs were slightly overcooked, with the yolks lacking the ideal runny consistency. Despite this minor flaw, the dish was satisfying, and the combination of flavors was still enjoyable.
Service with a Smile:
One standout aspect of my visit was the server’s exceptional friendliness and attentiveness. Their warm demeanor and willingness to accommodate special requests created a positive impression and contributed to the overall pleasant dining experience. The server’s enthusiasm for ensuring customer satisfaction added an extra layer of comfort to the meal.
A Tranquil Oasis:
Choosing to dine around 2pm proved to be a smart move, as the lunchtime rush had subsided, leaving the restaurant pleasantly empty. This created a serene and peaceful environment, allowing for easy conversation and relaxation. It’s a reminder that timing can make a significant difference in the overall dining experience, especially when seeking a quieter and more tranquil atmosphere.
Final Thoughts:
Big City Diner in Windward Mall offers a taste of comfort and satisfaction, highlighted by their tasty Eggs Benedict and attentive service. While the eggs were slightly overcooked, the dish still managed to deliver on flavor. The server’s genuine kindness and the serene ambiance created by the post-lunch lull contributed to a pleasant and enjoyable lunch outing. For those looking to avoid the crowds and indulge in a leisurely meal, a visit around 2pm could provide a serene oasis amid the hustle and bustle of Windward Mall.
Service is another highlight. The staff is friendly and efficient, taking orders promptly and serving dishes quickly, so you never feel like you’re waiting too long. Despite being a popular place, the team keeps everything running smoothly.
The space itself is bright and airy, with plenty of natural light and good ventilation, creating a welcoming and open environment. Overall, Big City Diner delivers a solid breakfast experience with good food, quick service, and a clean, spacious setting.
