Bierkeller is alright, but I think a tad overrated. It does indeed have a beautiful view of the Columbia Canal, but I’m not sure if that makes up for the expensive prices of their (at-best) mediocre food. The beer was fine as well, but nothing particularly noteworthy. I’d say Bierkeller is pretty average.

My wife and I enjoyed the Rouladen with Potato Dumplings and red cabbage – excellent…just like in Germany! Our appetizer was the “Kellerplatte” ( a charcuterie board, German style ) – another A+! Beers – definitely the Helles Lager, Kellerbier, and Kölsch …could not tell the difference between the beer in Munich or at Bierkeller in Columbia. The whole atmosphere reminded us of Germany!

It’s just ok. I was born in Germany and spent many years there. We had much on a Sunday afternoon. The food was ok. The best part of the restaurant is the location near the canal. Nice for a beer outside. You likely will have to park in the parking structure so it’s a bit of a walk. You order yourself and seat yourself and a long large room that does not have much personality. They are playing rather loud german pop music. The meal for $17 for Jagershcnitzel with potatoes. No salad. no rolls. For a soda you get one can. No refill. The people working there are very nice and the beer was very good. However if you are expecting fantastic german food there are other options in Columbia that are superior.

My husband and I went for their New Year’s Eve celebration. Each course came out and the food was cold, the white asparagus soup especially was absolutely the worst. However, I have every intention of returning for regular dinner service to get a better, more fair assessment of the quality of food. The menu looks incredible. Beer? Fabulous. Service? Fabulous. The atmosphere? Lovely. And we had an excellent time. Unfortunately, not all dishes do well when you’re trying to seat a restaurant full of people at the same time.

I always call this place “the prettiest spot for a beer in Columbia!” I’ve been a Bierkeller fan since the pop up days and my favorite pop ups were at Riverfront Park. I am thrilled that Scott and his crew were able to get a permanent spot right on the river/canal! Such a great setup and team to make it happen!

A very come-as-you-are, good vibes kind of place.

Of course the beers are great. That’s what we come for, then stay for everything else:

– The authentic-tasting German-inspired food. Whenever a new special is posted, the kitchen always nails it.

– The friendly, familiar staff running things efficiently.

– The new beer releases, food specials, live jazz, live bands, festivals. The place is always evolving.

Their Tuesday all-day happy hour/token night is a great deal and very chill. Thursday trivia night is a fun vibe too.

Great place to watch the sunset, bring out-of-towners, cool off in the summer since it’s by the canal and shady. Outdoor fire pits and indoor bier hall make it cozy in the winter.

It’s great seeing all kinds – families, friends, kids, dogs, students, couples, networking groups, biking/walking/running groups, religious groups, people I haven’t seen in weeks or years – all hanging around having a good time.

The origin story of this place is pretty cool too. Hubs and I jumped in at their first Oktoberfest pop-up in 2016 and have been following ever since. Been coming about once or twice a week since they opened this location. Columbia needed this. So glad it’s here.

Beautiful riverside views and polite service. However, the food did have solid room for improvement. The spätzle wasn’t cooked properly / well and the schnitzel was not a very thin slice( almost chicken nugget thickness). The pretzel was drenched in salt.
The bratwurst was pretty good!

I would come here for a beer and the view, not for the food.

What a great addition to Columbia. I followed the progress as this place was coming together and am glad I finally got to try it today.

Atmosphere — 5 stars. Definitely a gathering place. It’s loud if you eat inside though, FYI.

Food — 4 stars. The schnitzel special was overcooked and dry. The bratwurst, Brussels sprouts and spaetzle were perfect.

Beer — 5 stars.

Staff — 5 stars for friendliness. But service is slow. Not a problem if you’re enjoying the gathering space atmosphere. Just something to know about service.

I really am glad this place is here!

Whenever I have friends or family visiting from out of town I bring them to Bierkeller. The location, food and atmosphere are all great, but the biggest reason this is such a great place is the excellent beer.
It is unique among craft breweries in the South, as far as I know, because all the beers are authentic German lagers brewed on-site and fresh from the tank to the tap. There’s nothing else like it. The staple Keller Bier is one of the best you’ll ever taste, and there are always seasonally-appropriate alternate options as well. The Pilsner, Kolsch, Rauchbier, are all superb.
It’s also family and dog friendly, with a large open space to enjoy the weather and scenery, and frequent special events like live music or craft markets. The only thing I can think of that would make it even better would be a brass band in residence.
