I hope that’s not true.
At first it looked cute, like an old time diner in need of an upgrade, but then we saw it said it opened in 2015, and could not figure out how a place got so run down in only ten years, unless their design asthetic was something called mid80s weary. Being the most loved spot in town, we asked our waitress what they were known for. She sort of shrugged and said ‘Whatever’s on the Specials board’. The board had all you can eat fish and chips, spaghetti and meatballs and liver and onions. I got the fish and chips with a side salad and my gf got the liver and onions, curious if they made it the way her grandmother did.
They did not.
It wasn’t horrible, but not really something you would order again on purpose, or at least not without a doctor’s ordering you to, because of his fear of your low iron levels. My salad was very wet iceberg lettuce, four slices of an onion and a wedge of tomato. If you had thrown in a few slices of a carrot it would have been the kind of salad my dad would have made. My dad cannot cook.
My fish was ok, a little heavy on the fried part, definitely thinking they should change it from All You Can Eat to All You Will Eat… because one serving was enough to make me feel bad the fish were killed and treated that way. Our appetizer arrived midway through the meal, and turned out to be the strangest concoction of sliced zucchini with an incredibly light batter (I think it all got used up on the fish) and it had a very strange sauce on it (not mentioned in the menu) that we concluded was some sort of mixture of mayonnaise, ketchup, thousand Island and sarachai. Somehow it was even less impressive than the liver and the fish. We were hoping the waitress noticed we hadn’t eaten it, but that wasn’t happening. I tried taking a second bite, somehow it got worst.
Lots of locals shuffled in, and being in a diner in the middle of nowhere, it felt nice to be stared at as an outsider. Luckily their stares were not suffered too much as the entire time our eyes were stinging from the smoke in the air. I can only assume their kitchen didn’t have a vent. We ended up paying cash, because to be honest, I got a little iffy on the technical and security aspect of the place. As we drove away, tailgating a gas truck, and followed too closely by a man in a truck so big it showed his obvious insecurities, corn rows whipping past, we had to roll the windows down because our clothes reaked of fried foods and hometown something -ness.
The menu also had breakfast, Mexican food and a random assortment of things that I’m sure make it on the Specials Board in a fun rotation. Once we got back to the land of wifi I checked again, to see if this place was really ranked as the #1 place to eat in Wakarusa It was. My condolences to places #2 through #10, which obviously must have burned down in some horrible corn-related town fire. God bless those who love this place ..you can have it.
Half an order of Biscuits & Gravy with two eggs special.
