Here on a girls’ road trip and we chose Grand Forks just to come to Bernie’s. Had breakfast this morning and it did not disappoint. It’s apparent that the food is scratch made, and made with care. The servers were welcoming and delightful. We’re coming back tomorrow for dinner!! Can’t wait to try the layer cake for dessert!

What a wonderful gem in East Grand Forks from Molly Yeh! My husband and I took his parents and nephew here and found out the building is historic, so it adds to the simple Scandinavian decor. We were seated in the adorable greenhouse table which was perfect for 5. Since we came in for dinner, we had the delicious rolls, the cheese ball appetizer (fresh veggies!), and a few cocktails too. I had the traditional hot dish loaded with tater tots and it’s delicious and a classic. I stole a bite of my husband’s swedish meatballs and they were also delicious. Great portions, too! And we took home the almond bar, the sugar cookie (which is reminiscent of ND sugar cookies my husband grew up on), halva, and a Hot Dish shirt because why not! Can’t wait to come back for breakfast and lunch.

Love the location of the restaurant, along the Red River. The restaurant is huge. Its simplistic open layout reminds of a Scandinavian theme. There is a bakery counter, cash register, bar area. Booths, tables and unique seating areas and a gift shop. The staff was super friendly and upon entering the river side entrance a baker and a cake was leaving I suppose to make a special delivery. We had the Knoephla soup which was like a gourmet version if there was such a thing, tender carrots, potatoes, and celery in a milky broth not heavy cream with dots of knoephla dough, garnished with fresh dill; served on farm style dishes along with the most delicious sour dough bread. It was a delight to our taste buds. We also had the burger with tots, the beef was excellent and tasty. We also had the Mac and cheese which topped with toasted bread crumbs, sooooo cheesy and delicious, it was served with a spring mix which had an Italian style light dressing on it. We also tried the grilled cheese and pickle sandwich which is similar to the fried pickle spears Molly Yeh has made on her show but on a thick yummy bread rather than wrapped in an egg roll wrapper. They serve cook products which is a plus for us Diet Coke drinkers. The bakery case was calling so we tried the chocolate dipped potato chip cookie (our favorite) , the peanut blossom cookie and the Oreo cookie all were yummy. Suzy couldn’t resist trying the S’more cocktail which only would have been more delightful if the marshmallow was actually toasted.

Absolutely outstanding. In a town where food quality and creativity often lack (sorry Grand Forks), Bernie’s truly shines. It is clear that great care is taken in both the front of the restaurant and in the kitchen with bright color, a beautiful aesthetic, and high quality food. The steak was very good as was the Bernie’s Sour. But, it’s their baked goods that hit this place out of the park. Grand Forks needs more places like Bernie’s. Special shout out to Novelle the bartender for awesome service too.

I really wanted to love Bernies, but… I took my 85 year old mom for a lunch treat and she had the knoefla soup with a slice of bread and I had the chicken salad toast which I originally thought was supposed to be a sandwich before it came out. The crust on the bread was on the burnt side, and so hard i couldn’t eat it and had to cut the bread from the middle. It was hard to eat. The little pickles were good. Chicken was good and dilly. Knoefla soup was good but mostly broth and had only one small piece of dumpling and chicken and hardly and veggies. I wasnt sure what the menu theme was and I wished there were more soup and sandwich choices and other options from Molly’s Food Network show like motze ball soup, pot stickers, walleye sandwich, meatball sliders, latkes, etc. The desserts were good. The service was very good and friendly.

This place is a delight to see and eat at. Family friendly and can have parties. Cute venue and nicely decorated. Food is high quality and tasty. Every item seems to be well thought out and healthful. I would totally give it 5 stars if the portions were bigger bc I left still being hungry after ordering my Turkey sandwich. It was on this amazing bread that had a tinge of a croissant and French bread chewy feel and taste which was toasted nicely and I wanted more of it as well as more than one folded slice of high quality black pepper filled Turkey and very thin 4mm slices of Brie cheese along with super thinly sliced pickled peppers and pickled onions and small pickles on the side. I liked the amount of caeser lettuce pieces bc I love veges but wished the Turkey was more than one slice and more cheese was added or another cheese like swiss or Gouda bc although I love Brie cheese, on this sandwich there was that fermented white cover taste that didn’t go well with the sandwich. The Dijon mustard on the side was very good as well. But for a sandwich that cost $14.50, I was hoping there was more food. The white bean toast was really good as well and a great concept of bean spread on really good toasted and tasty bread. I loved the napkins w the nice design…every detail well thought out. The food choices here are top notch and healthy and hip that you can’t find in Grand Forks or East Grand Forks or most of ND. So its definitely a wonderful option. Overall it was a really fun and nice experience w great ambience and nice dessert spread that I definitely will try next time.

We had to get some of those delicious chocolate chip potato chip cookies they make. We tried the fish and potatoes which was so tasty. I loved the tartar sauce the most. We also tried the meatballs and mashed potatoes very good. The rolls you get before your meal are the best I’ve ever had. I could go there and just eat them.

We drove the 254 km from Winnipeg to try out Bernie’s. Loved it! Relaxed atmosphere, great menu, super friendly staff and great food. BTW the Cardamom Cappuccino was to die for. So too the pickle grilled cheese and knoephla soup, served with bread.

Swedish meatballs were terrific! Brussels sprouts had perfect charred outer leaves for crunch. We loved the blueberry cheesecake… not too heavy on the berries so the cheesecake was the star!!

Night and day difference from the old Whitey’s to Bernie’s. The decor is soft, cozy, and comfortable. The customer service was outstanding! We had the dill cheese ball, my friend had the walleye dinner and I had the NY Strip Steak Frites dinner–both were mouth watering! (Especially the steak). The buns served prior to our meal were the best I’ve ever had.
