I learned my lesson last time and made sure to show up right at 5:00 PM for opening. It’s the best way to beat the dinner rush and avoid the long wait times that usually kick in later. Having the place a bit quieter at the start of the evening makes for a much more relaxed meal.
The consistency is what really stands out. Everything we ordered was just as good as the first time. Perfectly seasoned and served piping hot. The quality of the ingredients is obvious in every bite. Strongly recommend if you like spicy food.

I was exited to see this resto because it pened in the old spicy Chinese food place, but the spice level is much higher than the old restaurant and the menu states they will not lower the spice level. That’s just too bad. 🙁 Its spicy level is way too high for me. I ordered two dishes to-go and ended up dumping them because it’s too spicy for me. I suppose that’s my problem haha

Ben Chili looks and feels like an authentic Hunan restaurant. There is English on the menu, but nowhere else. If you don’t speak Mandarin, you will have to use your phone’s translator. Almost every dish I’ve ever had here is spectacular. The spicy dishes are pretty spicy,, and they don’t do spice levels. In fact, they have a sign that says “mild? We don’t know what that means.” I especially recommend the eggplant and thousand-year-old dish and their signature spicy beef. They don’t take reservations or do an online wait list, and the waitlist grows quickly after their opening times.

The taste was okay and it did make us eat more rice.
However, the hygiene was not ideal. Out of six people in our group, four had diarrhea afterward. I had the worst reaction — since yesterday I’ve had continuous diarrhea, and if it doesn’t stop I may need to go to the hospital.

The service also needs improvement. There were only four or five tables occupied when we arrived, but we were not given any utensils until I asked the server, “Are we supposed to eat with our hands?” Only then did they bring them. Because of this, I only left a 10% tip.

The price was quite high, yet the portions were small.
I hope the restaurant can seriously improve. This is my honest experience, and I hope my feedback is helpful.

I live quite far away; it’s a 20-mile drive to Hacienda Heights for this restaurant. Over the past year, I’ve eaten here with friends about 10 times, and we’ve tried almost everything. The stir-fried beef with chili peppers, rice tofu, dried tofu, and stir-fried spinach with pork cracklings are all good—must-orders every time, very filling and perfect with rice. The fish and frog dishes are just so-so, not quite meeting my expectations. I rarely eat pork liver in the US, but today I tried the stir-fried pork liver with chili peppers. I’d give it a 7 out of 10; the flavor was good, very fragrant and wok-fried, but a little tough.

Overall, this restaurant is amazing. In Los Angeles, where Hunan cuisine is so competitive, it’s incredible that I still want to come back. It’s the pinnacle of Hunan cuisine!!

The biggest downside is the incredibly long wait times—it’s always so popular! I arrived at 5:20 pm today and waited in line for 45 minutes before being seated They don’t call to get a number; you have to wait outside. If you want to eat here, plan your time accordingly.
