Although I ate them last, I’ll start with the fries as they were the least notable. They were fine. Not too pricey for a nice big basket, but a little dry.
I always like to try fried fish tacos. There are many unique ways to approach them, though they do retain a core identity, so you get to see the personality of the restaurant come through in a relatively subjective playing field. Belly Goat certainly tried here, and there are definite positives. I’m not usually a fan of pickled jalapenos but they worked here. The slaw was great, and they were big enough to match the price. Yet they fail in two key ways. First of all, the tortillas are not good. They have that slightly stale dryness and flavor typical of bought tortillas, and having to taste them in every bite unbalanced the experience. But far more importantly, the fish was bad too! The few bits of actual meat I got seemed fine, but they were so deeply enveloped in the oiliest, most char-flavored coating I have ever had I would rather have just ordered them vegetarian and fishless.
But they really made up for it with the burger. The Drunken Onion had so many great flavors — acidity, meaty savoriness, creamy cheese, all rambunctiously competing for attention but ultimately working together to create a fun and enjoyable eating experience. The burger was huge, too, both in girth and height. It’s nice to know that, at least when it comes to burgers, this place knows what they’re doing.
Like I said, they have a fantastic looking menu and I’d love to try a few more of their offerings. I would just stay away from the tacos and stick to the burgers.
Iceburg, tomato, smoked rogue blue, bacon jam, masa onion hay, chipotle ranch. The first bite was YUM. After that I was disappointed that the flavor disappeared. It was messy in a way that I thought it would be the bomb burger. The bun fell apart and it was top heavy, so I tasted a lot of the bun and not the burger. The beef as alright. Not sure what was going on but it got dry and fell apart. I didn’t eat all of it just disappointed. My husband got Seoul Surfer $15.00 Kimchi, toasted sesame, BBQ;d smoked pork belly, fried egg, gochujang mayo. He also said the same thing, the bun just didn’t work well with the burger and all the stuff they pile on it. I liked the frys but my husband passed. I keep trying with Santa Cruz restaurants especially since I was born and raised here.
First and foremost, let’s talk about “The Forager” Portobello Burger. Wow! This burger was a masterpiece of flavors and textures. The juicy, blackened sous-vide portobello was cooked to perfection and had an incredibly rich, earthy taste. The Avo mash added a creamy, indulgent element that paired beautifully with the chimichurri marinated tomatoes, which brought a burst of freshness to every bite. The sunflower sprouts added a delightful crunch, and the sriracha-pimento olive aioli was the perfect blend of spicy and savory. It was a burger experience like no other, and I can’t wait to have it again!
And then there were the “Crispy Naked Fries.” These fries were simply outstanding. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and wonderfully fluffy on the inside. They were seasoned just right, enhancing their natural potato flavor. I couldn’t stop munching on them, and neither could my wife!
The service was impeccable too. The staff was attentive and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. The ambiance of the restaurant was cozy and inviting, creating a lovely atmosphere for our dinner.
Overall, our dining experience at this restaurant was a five-star delight! The Forager Portobello Burger and Crispy Naked Fries are absolute must-tries, and I can’t recommend this place enough. Whether you’re a vegetarian or simply looking for a unique and delicious meal, this restaurant has got you covered. We’ll definitely be back for more culinary adventures. Thank you for a fantastic evening!
The burgers were, unfortunately, lackluster. I ordered a kimchi burger that just didn’t have the kick that I wanted a kimchi burger to have. The kimchi was flavorless. The fried egg was perfect. Bun was toasted and beautiful.
My sister ordered a different burger that had dressed salad on it, a great idea in principle, except it soaked the bottom bun into mush within the few minutes before we started eating.
I want to give a lower rating but I really hope the management reads this and makes a couple adjustments to their menu.
I want to love this place
Edit after second visit:
Kimchi burger is still terrible, it’s as of they rinsed the kimchi in water before adding it to the burger.
Fry’s were okay.
