Reviews
Short version: Bello’s is NOT just another pizza place. They serve delicious, wood-fired pizzas, are owned and operated by a father & son duo, have an amazing atmosphere, great food options, AND are reasonably priced. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Long version:
History
Townies may remember Kona Bistro, a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant uptown with fine dining and the best atmosphere in town. It was a real bummer when they suddenly closed in 2017. Great News! Bello Woodfired Pizza Studio has taken over the space (31 W High St.) and is just as excellent (or maybe more!) than Kona ever was. The Owner, Matt Hess, has lived a life of adventure comparable to the Secret Life of Walter Mitty. His latest adventure involves quitting his job, building a massive wood-fired pizza oven by hand, hiring his son, and opening up a restaurant.
Atmosphere — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the only restaurants in town with no TV’s on the wall ( ), Bello is the perfect place for a date night, adult conversation, or casual dinner out with the family. It’s quiet, but not TOO quiet. When we were there, the Beatles was playing on the background. Matt’s life story is told by his outdoor adventure gear that can be found hanging on the walls of the restaurant, along with some unique pieces of artwork. Ask him for the stories! Most of what you see inside the restaurant (tables, bartop, doors, pizza oven) Matt built himself with lumber from the family’s farm. The slightly smoky smell that fills the restaurant is out of this world.
Food — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Real wood-fired pizza is the kind of thing that you find at a ski resort in Colorado, and expect to spend $30+ per pie. It’s a brilliant concept: The pizza bakes next to the burning firewood, taking on some of its flavor and scent. When they first opened this past spring, we were excited to try it, but honestly, came home unimpressed. The pizzas were small, options few, and the prices expensive. Last week, we got a Bello coupon in the mail and decided to give it another try. I’m glad we did! They’d adjusted their pricing, added more options, and the pizzas are twice the size! Speciality pizzas start at just $11. That’s less than Papa John’s! In addition to pizza, they also have some great salads and a good selection of appetizer options. We tried the stuffed mushrooms — mmMMM!
PRO TIP: Ask for a plate of oil & vinegar to dip your pizza crust in. You’ll thank me later 😉
Drinks — In Progress
Since they don’t yet have their liquor license, drink options are limited. However, they’re working with a local craft brewery to bring some great drink choices on the menu soon. That will be a great addition!
Service — ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Both times, our servers were excellent. The owner is super friendly and quite a storyteller, which was fun. My wife and I sat at the same table for our two hour date night, and left feeling recharged. Mission accomplished.
Final Word: For the seven years we’ve been married, Hannah and I have been (unsuccessfully) looking for a go-to date night spot. I think we’ve finally found it. Bello’s really is something special, and I feel fortunate to have it here in town. Would you help us to make sure this restaurant succeeds and stays open for years to come??
