I was at the Sheet metal shop with Turtle Hardback dropping off a Bushwacker 350 Cowling for his Plaxstar Stargazer, when the two of us realized that we are only feet away from the Bearing West Bar & Seafood Restaurant, and the Four Dueces Bar! Well…We just had to go get a couple of pops from the Duece, and then one of those world famous Shrimp Louie Salads from the Bearing West!
Man-O-Man that Shrimp Louie was Spectacular! 5 ☆☆☆☆☆ for sure!

Want to experience a business where two guys pour their heart and soul into it? This is it.

Ray and I wanted a place to celebrate our birthdays with our family and immediately thought of Bearing West. John and Jeff have poured so much love and effort into this place, and it shows in every single detail.

The back room was perfect for a family gathering. They went above and beyond, setting up a little kids’ table complete with games and even asking the kids’ ages ahead of time. We had plenty of space for them to move around, and for once, the adults actually got to sit, eat, and enjoy a meal without feeling like we needed to hand over screens. It was the best kind of family chaos:
happy, relaxed, and full of good food.

They have a full liquor license, and the cocktails are delicious. You can tell they care about what they’re making. They rotate in seasonal specials too, which says a lot. It’s not the same tired menu, they’re true food lovers, and it shows.

The atmosphere is so authentically California. The walls are lined with local surf and skate photos, plus retired boards turned into art. It’s not stiff or overly styled, just a warm nod to the culture here. You feel like you’re hanging out with friends who want to feed you well after a day at the beach or a ride through the park.

Thank you, John and Jeff, for feeding both my family and my California-born soul. The food, the hospitality, and the heart behind it all make Bearing West a true hidden gem.

Last night we decided to try Bearing West. We ordered two Shrimp Louie’s. We were told 5 minutes (nothing takes 5 minutes) but I went to pick it up right away. It took almost 45 minutes from the time of the call and there was only two tables occupied. But okay, the people were nice and I was looking forward to the dinner. First and foremost the shrimp was not deveined. While it is not harmful it is customary to divine shrimp unless you cook it with the shell on. The lettuce was cut in very think clumps making it difficult to eat with the salad. When my wife called they said the shrimp is precooked and the only thaw it (In San Francisco you would expect Shrimp to be fresh) and serve it. Over all the Shrimp Louies were a disappointment. They did not seem to care that we were disappointed. Normally a restaurant would say something to show they care or maybe offer a credit but nothing, not concerned at all. It looked great and seemed to have so much potential.

Food was super delicious! Check pea flour fried artichokes hearts we yummy, Deviled eggs are the best starter and a must have on every visit. This was our first time having the Shrimp Louie salad and it is now my favorite in all of SF. It is shredded and ready to eat. Presentation alone has high marks and the flavors were perfectly balanced. We split the Cioppino with the added pasta on the side. Yuu-uuuummmmm! Lots of seafood and the soup base had us making deals for the dregs at the end.

Great to have this seafood spot on the west side of town!

Food and Drinks: All tasty. We especially loved their take on the clam chowder (our new favorite chowder?). The oysters were super fresh, and the cocktails, fish tacos and deviled eggs were nice too!

Service: A+! Our server was friendly, responsive, and attentive. The rest of the staff was also warm and welcoming when we came in.

Ambiance: Casual updated chowder house/ocean vibe. We walked in around 5:30pm on a Thursday and by the time we left, the front room was full and bustling.

We’ll be back and have already recommended it to some friends who live a few blocks away 🙂

We recently hosted a private event at Bearing West and the experience was a total delight from start to finish. Jeff and team went above and beyond to make everything seamless and enjoyable. From the initial planning to the day of the event, communication was responsive and collaborative, allowing for a stress-free experience.

The space was perfect for mingling and seating. It has a warm, welcoming atmosphere that provided a comfortable, at-home vibe for our guests. They were also super flexible with decor, open to all my changing concepts and offered great suggestions along the way.

The food was a big hit! Everything was served with attention to detail and they helped manage last minute dietary requests. Timing was perfect and everything flowed effortlessly. Guests are still raving about the meal and many have returned to dine.

Overall, it was a memorable experience that exceeded our expectations. We would absolutely recommend Bearing West for any occasion and confident you will be well taken take care of.

Great spot if you are solo or with a partner. Amazing atmosphere for two cases. I came in to try the oyster chowder and it was phenomenal 5/5. I had the amber beer they had on tap and it was delicious. I was fortunate to have the owner man the bar and had a pleasure talking to him. I look forward to coming back and becoming a regular whenever I’m in the city. – some places you stop in and you can tell right away someone takes great care of the place and it’s usually family owned. Much love and respect for the owners and the comfortable, safe space they created.

Came in on a friends recommendation for good oysters and I was not disappointed. Everything we had was delicious. The cocktails were perfectly crafted and well balanced, the food was very fresh, and the service was fabulous. The Baja fish tacos were great, clams were wonderful, but I’ll be coming back for those fresh oysters for sure! Highly recommend and will definitely be returning!
