Same place it’s always been. If you like onion burgers, this is the place to get them in Michigan. You can come inside and sit at the stainless steel bar, or the stainless steel bar at the window. There’s an option to walk up and order through the window, or you can call it in. Classic burger joint. If you’re in town you should grab a couple, or 6 cheeseburgers!

I stopped by somewhat late in the evening, and I found the interior to be charming in an old fashioned sort of way. There’s relatively few places like this out my way, so this was nice. The prices were decent, and I found the food to be nice. Service was quick and friendly. I got two burgers and a coney dog, and it was definitely enough. My one word of caution would be that although they accept cards for paying now, tipping is still a cash only thing. That aside, Bates Burgers makes for a nice late night experience I think.

35 years and still loving Bates- Husband has been going here much longer-The only thing that has changed is our appetite
Can’t go many places and get a meal for two of us for under $20 -this is a staple of Livonia. I pray they will never close. They always seem to have a good team working in there-
I will say that sometimes our burgers are a little off depending on who’s at the grill- and anywhere that still serves a crinkle fry is my kind of place

This is a great spot for breakfast and lunch. Their burgers are really delicious. Affordable prices on every menu item. Their breakfast special is also a tough bargain to beat. Food made fresh to order just the way you ask. I really like the old nostalgic look of the building. They been in business since 1959! That right there tells you they have been doing something right to keep the doors open and the place stays busy especially come lunchtime. Can’t wait until I return to Michigan so I can try out more of the menu here. I hear their soups are really good and can’t wait to try them next. This place is a definite must try if you’re in the area. They use fresh ingredients every day and the food tastes very good especially those burgers.

I go to this place about once a year not because of the food. The food is what you expect, some greasy burgers that pair well with a hangover. I ordered today over the phone and I was told 15 minutes. From my last experience I remembered waiting well over the time quoted. I left about 15 minutes after I ordered. I placed my order at 12:07 and was pulling out with food in hand 12:46. Almost triple the time I was told, that’s the main reason for the 3 stars for service. An honest time is very important in the food/restaurant industry, I know this well because I work in the industry. As I know mistakes happen in food and what would you know, my no onion coney dog had onions on it. I will attach the photo of the receipt and 2 coneys on the receipt. I will be back here but it probably will be at least 3-4 months because I do not appreciate wasting my time with mis-quoted food time.
Just a side note when I arrived there were about 4-5 people in the tiny crammed carry out vestibule. All of them except me and 1 other guy had left and the other gentleman had an order for Steve and asked “I called this in before all these people got here and ordered.” Then the employees response was “it’s no onion on the burger that’s why it takes longer.” I can see them not cooking the burgers and onions together so that makes absolutely no sense. I then chimed in “I had no pickle , that’s probably why mine isn’t ready. “
I think it’s best to just come in and place your order because every time I phone in the order it takes 20 minutes when I get there. I think if it’s not paid for they just make the order when you arrive. Or at least the burgers because the coneys were pretty cold.

I love this ’50s style burger joint and their greasy, flavor-packed burgers smothered in piles of caramelized onions! The tables and stools look recently updated but retain the vinyl and steel iconic ’50s diner/burger joint style.
Bates is the pinnacle–what White Castle aspires to be but never achieves.
Even though already full from a previous meal, I eagerly gobbled down a fully dressed double cheeseburger with mustard and gobs of onions. A dumb choice from a health standpoint, but who cares about health when you’re at Bates?? Bates is not made for health, it’s made for pure, greasy burger-and-onion pleasure!
Word of advice: Do NOT store them in the fridge overnight as leftovers, like we did. They lose all their greatness when reheated in a microwave the next day! Sure, they’re edible, but who wants merely edible when you deserve an iconic, savory 1950s hamburger experience, flung fresh off the griddle into your modern world!

20+ year customer and highly disappointed. The burgers were dried up pieces of meat, cheese wasn’t melted, ordered with no onions. The cook put onions on them and then hand picked them off, then served us cold burgers. Also, the air conditioning was so cold, we were freezing when it was 60 degrees outside. It’s too bad that our bates burger experience is done. ☹️

Burgers are a classic smash burger with grilled onions.. you can get 6 for about 13 bucks and it’s totally worth it. Absolutely delicious. Why anyone would pick a chain fast food restaurant over this place is beyond me. I haven’t tried any of their other items, but the burgers are amazing and all the prices are very reasonable.
