Here is a clear, polite, honest review you can post:

Review for Basta Café

The café itself feels very warm and cozy inside, with a welcoming atmosphere. The staff is extremely nice, attentive, and the service is quick — which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, the food did not match the experience. The beet salad had almost no flavor and was very disappointing. The pizza was also not good: the cheese was burned and so stretchy that it was almost impossible to chew. My child nearly choked on it, and there was way too much tomato paste on top. Overall, the service and ambiance were great, but the food definitely needs improvement.

I used to LOVE basta. My boyfriend came into town and I brought him here along with my parents for a nice dinner- we were so excited. However, I don’t think I’ll return. First off, we were told it’d be a 20 minute wait (no worries- that’s pretty normal!). Then… BOOM! We weren’t seated until 45 minutes later…. Okay, no big deal- small hiccup. Then, we waited 15 minutes for a sever. We ordered and put in for drinks. Our food arrived before the beverages… and we had to remind our server of the drinks we ordered. Once the food arrived, I was SO excited! It was cold, but still delicious…. Until I found PAPER in my meal? I told a waitress and she questioned me…. But I affirmed it was paper. She went to check, and it was in fact the paper from the tray the pasta sits on. She came back to let me know, and that was it…. and it was still on our bill. I asked at the end, and I got a super condescending “well, you didn’t give the meal back”. I’m sorry I did not want to wait another 20ish minutes…? I’m so disappointed because we loved coming here. All of the reviews recently have been pretty poor, which I didn’t realize until posting this. The tiramisu was still good, though. The butter cake on the other hand was very dry. I hope management turns this around so we can come back someday ):

First time visiting here.

We met a friend here for lunch. We started with their delicious bread.

We ordered and I got the Meatballs and Parpadelle. My wife ordered the Cavatelli alla Norcina in Truffle cream sauce. But, she switched the pasta to Parpadelle like mine. Our friend ordered a lunch salad. As an afterthought, we ordered a pizza with mushroom, sausage and ham. We ordered it to take home.

Funny thing was that the pizza came out first. The three of us ate all but a couple slices, immediately! It was so good.

Then our mains came. My Parpadelle was perfect and the tomato sauce was outstanding!! The meatballs were light and flavorful. I really enjoyed my meal.

My wife’s Parpadelle with truffle cream was very good. She also enjoyed it a lot!

My friends salad was good but big. She took half home.

At the end, my wife and I split a Tiramisu. As good as the pastas were, this was the highlight.

Overall this is a really enjoyable restaurant. From the homemade pasta, to the incredible pizza and the outstanding Tiramisu, it was awesome. I don’t say this lightly!

The servers were helpful and authentic!

Well worth the drive across the valley!

Great Italian restaurant with many options to choose from. We let our waitress recommend some items and were glad we did! The short ribs, while they didn’t look like anything special, they were amazing. The food, service and overall experience were great.

Closest thing to Italy on the west coast of the USA! Go there and eat family style! Everything ate from the bread/oil, salads, beef carpaccio, homemade pasta, dry aged steaks carved at the table were all top notch quality!

I have been here a few times and I will be back! This is a destination restaurant!

Basta in Agoura Hills is, in my opinion, a bit overrated.
Don’t get me wrong — it’s a good spot, just not quite the 5-star experience many reviews suggest.
The pasta Bolognese was decent, nothing memorable.
Good selection of aged beef. The Florentine steak was generous in size, but unfortunately, they drowned it in lemon juice — a sin! .
Great bread.
As for the service, it was a little too energetic for my taste — very lively, very loud — creating a buzzing atmosphere that I personally wasn’t expecting.
Overall, it’s a good restaurant, but I wouldn’t go as far as calling it exceptional.

Service is great. The food was amazing, you can really taste difference of the fresh ingredients paired with pasta made in house. The atmosphere was nice, not too loud but also not too quiet. Great spot for a date or a meal with friends or family.

Literally from start (pistachio martini) to finish (tiramisu) everything here is fantastic. The delicate aroma of smoked meat fills the air. The welcome of Severino (owner) is generous. Melt in the mouth braised short ribs are consistently perfect. Beautifully peppery arugula salad paired with a creamy buratta cheese and the Basta little gem salad dressed with a lemon thyme vinaigrette are equally satisfying and refreshing. Perfectly crispy crusted bread you dip into vinegar and olive oil. House made pasta that pairs so well with the short ribs. Excellent pistachio martini as well as the classic vodka martini (Chopin vodka) from a very well stocked bar. Choose your dolce from an exquisite tiramisu that, my friends, is not stale but fresh and perfect or a lovely butter cake that is the perfect finale to a fabulous meal. Yes. This IS the place to savor in Agoura, CA. Welcoming. Lovely. A home for those who desire deliciousness. Bravo.
Indoor, bar or covered outdoor seating. Buon Appetito!

Our dinner was wonderful! Very tasty and the portions are large. I couldn’t finish my short ribs so I took them home. I had two more meals!
Service was very good co sideline how busy they were.

Worth the wait.

I’ll be back. Here’s why.

This is definitely good quality food, at a mostly fair price. I mean you’re going to pay $60 for an aged New York steak. But at the same time, there are a lot of dishes that I believe are mostly within most people’s budgets.

We were a decent size group, and some of the highlights were:

Trout: more like a pink salmon. It was moist, tender, tasty

Whole Chicken: juicy, tender, crispy skin. The brown sauce was delicious, tangy and savory.

Kale Salad was crisp and refreshing. Get extra dressing on the side.

Mussels were plentiful, tasty, delicious.

Individual Pizza Margherita is about 12 – 13″. Crusty, chewy, tangy, fresh. I loved the char.

2 things Could use improvement:
1. the Octopus Salad. It’s 80% potatoes and tomato. 20% octopus. It would be nice if there was at least maybe 25% more octopus. I’m just being honest.

2. The $60 NY Steak was ok. I’m kind of biased to eating steak out in a restaurant, because I can make it better at home. But for what it is, it was definitely medium rare. I didn’t taste anything special about it. But honestly, you might enjoy some of the other dishes more than ordering the NY Steak here. But, It’s up to you.

On a bright finishing note, the Butterscotch dessert is by far THE best thing. The tiramisu is a close 2nd. Order both.

Service was exceptional, from our waiter all the way down to the bussers. Our table was checked on quite often, and frequently throughout a 2-hour experience.

Only downside to the entire experience, just in general, is that this place does not take reservations. You do have to expect anywhere from a 10-minute to 1 hour wait depending what time of the evening you arrive for dinner, and also which day of the week it is.

Dress code is what I would call Casual to business casual. It’s not exactly a five-star Italian restaurant where you need to wear a black tie or anything. You’ll find an occasional Patron that wears flip-flops, shorts and a t-shirt, but honestly you really should dress up a little.

Plenty of parking for free in the main lot, otherwise you might have to park on Agoura road, or a long one of the other side streets. Make sure you read the street signs.

As a last and final note, it’s a great spot, I would totally come back here on a date, as a family gathering, special occasion, or even just to sit at the bar. If you get here earlier, you can expect to get a table and be served faster. Weekends are very popular, more so when there’s a concert going on next door at the Canyon Club.
