Basil Babe is a fast-casual counter service Thai family restaurant ran and operated by Eastern Michigan University alum, Haluthai, alongside her mother, Vasanna, the original owner of Siam Square in Ann Arbor. What originally started off as a pop-up, quickly grew into something neither of them could believe. With ongoing supporting from their community, Basil Babe is now officially a brick and mortar in their own hometown of Ypsilanti.

Visited friends in the area and ordered takeout from here as I’ve gotten recommendations from others before. I was also very excited to try the restaurant bc they offer pork belly grapow, which is my favorite Thai dish that’s not sold at most Thai restaurants I’ve been to in MI.
First impression, portions are smaller than the other restaurants I go to, so pricing is somewhat higher for the value you’d get.
We got:
Crab Rangoons – 5/10 nothing special
Sweet chili wings – 5/10, small wings, chili sauce
tasted generic, nothing crazy
Papaya salad – 3/10, no other flavor to the salad besides the garlic. Absent of the balanced sweet, citrusy and savory profile of a traditional Thai style papaya salad. Does come w a small bag of sticky rice, which was nice.
Pork belly grapow – 2/10, I had so much hope for this dish. It seemed popular with the other reviews but left me so disappointed. The pork belly pieces were so dry, almost jerky. The whole dish tasted overly sweet and missed the savory, spicy and aromatic aspects of the dish.
Pad Thai – 1/10, it was the blandest pad Thai I’ve ever gotten. Anywhere. Tasted like blanched noodles. Even with the lime squeeze.
Chili jam – 1/10, didn’t know what to expect with this dish except it being a stir fry dish. This was overly sweet as well, even more than the pork belly grapow… we got it with chicken. If you’re into sweet chicken, this is for you.
We spent $80 on takeout here, we did pick it up closer to closing time. Which isn’t an excuse for why the dishes tasted the way they did. Maybe we came on an off day but we were not happy with the money we spent. Of course, we may have different tastes than you, so go try it for yourself. Personally, would I go back? I don’t think so.

Overall experience was pretty positive. The servers were extremely nice and helpful. The Pad Thai was alright, I thought it could have used more flavor. The spice level good, but it was kind of bland. The red curry and pork belly were very good. The pork and basil dumplings had an amazing sauce but I wished the basil taste was a bit stronger.

loved this place! you order and pay before you eat so slightly different then other sit down locations. we got the drunken noodles (can be made vegan), the thai red curry dumplings ( a little too crispy for my liking) and the pandan coconut pudding (personally not a fan but came with 3 little ones). took like 10-15 min for the food to arrive and you can just leave after you eat which is nice! the noodles seemed like rice paper folded up (like stacked in a way)! came out to ~$35 w tip which was pretty reasonabley priced! that was the perfect amount of food for 2 people.

This is the best Thai food in the state of Michigan!! I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant! They have an excellent vegan and vegetarian selection! The menu consistently changes and is never boring!! The staff is super friendly and willing to accommodate for dietary restrictions and overly picky people like myself!! I LOVE BASIL BABE!!

I love this restaurant! The store looks very cute, the atmosphere just says “authentic” and the price is so affordable. Then let’s talk about food, we ordered (1)OG with a fried egg – so delicious and I can have so much rice with it; and how can the fried egg look this cute? (2)Pad Thai with fried pork belly – perfect flavor and excellent crunchy pork belly! (3)Pudding – OMG the pudding is so elegant! I have never had such a wonderful desert in AA! If you are Asian, you’ll understand how valuable this pudding it. It is not that sweet but tastes so good; have never tried anything like this but I think I will come back to this store multiple times just for this pudding! The owner is also so nice.

I want to love Basil Babe. I love the vibe, I love the story behind the restaurant, and want to support the family that runs it. I’ve been twice, and on the first visit my stir fry was SO salty and SO sweet. I wanted to give them another go, and came back more recently. The chili jam pork belly stir fry sounded delicious and was plated beautifully. However I couldn’t get past the amount of fish sauce used, as it left behind an almost foul taste. I’ll still try them again another day, but it just feels like the kitchen uses a bit too heavy of a hand when it comes to over seasoning.

Basil Babe is a great option for Thai food. Whether you’re dining in or getting carry-out, there hasn’t been a single thing on the menu that I’ve tried that wasn’t delicious! When you enter, you are welcomed by their friendly staff and a great atmosphere. I have tried many things from the menu but basil babe has the best spring rolls and crab Rangoon’s around the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area (possibly the best spring rolls I’ve ever had). Their dishes are very flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. 10/10 and my favorite recommendation to friends and family in the area!

Servers are really nice and I believe the owner once had a great restaurant in the area. Unfortunately Basil Babe is mid at best. The food is bland, lacks any real flavor and I’m not sure why. With a Thai mom and daughter as owners you’d hope that they’d do better than blitzing their chili flakes with sugar but sadly that’s just how it is. The food is very overpriced because although the portions are decent, it’s hard to get through even half without feeling bored. The food really was not good and I wouldn’t rec if you wanted to eat some real Thai food.
Also, wow I read some other reviews and the way the owner (the daughter i’m guessing based off context clues) responds is not only very unprofessional but makes me want to support the restaurant even less. I just want to say I am Thai and moved here from Thailand 2 years ago. I heard of BB through a friend in Bangkok before I even moved to Michigan and had relatively high hopes given the owners are Thai and it only recently opened. Have some respect for your patrons instead of putting them on blast on social media like they’re bullying you. This is a restaurant where you are serving people and their voice matters whether you think it’s ‘valid’ or not. The majority of complaints are of how bland and tasteless the food is and the timeline shows this hasn’t changed since opening. It’s a shame to see a business owner behave in such a way and I’m not one to preach that ‘the customer is always right’ but if you hear the same critique over and over perhaps it is a problem within the restaurant.

You seat yourself, and a waiter will ask for your drink selection. You can look at a paper menu or use a QR code to look at it on your phone. Once you decide your food choices, you have to walk up to the hostess desk to place your order.
The service is VERY FAST. In less than 5 minutes my food was in front of me.
The dumplings were overcooked, but we loved the sauce. The other entrees were just mediocre. The fried pork was very overcooked in the garlic fried rice. The chili jam tasted solely like seafood juice, terrible.
