Absolutely loved Basic Kitchen. We ate dinner on the beautiful patio next to a heater that kept us plenty warm without needing to wear our jackets. The food was amazing! I had the caramelized carrots (they were so big they looked like sweet potatoes), a golden latte, and the coconut chicken bowl. The waitress was incredible, she asked if I like spicy things and I said no so she suggested the chili oil on the side and I’m grateful for that suggestion as it would have been to spicy for me. She also gave us a list of places to check out when she learned it was our first time in Charleston. Everything about this place was top notch and I highly recommend it.

We were told by our valet to go here for lunch. We sat at the bar and our servers/bartenders were exceptional. They educated us patiently and did a great job with their recommendations. I had the Falafel Bowl with the Shawarma Chicken (thanks, Ben, for that upgrade recommendation!) and my husband had the Naughty Burger. The flavors were great on both. Great, fresh flavors and a very fresh environment.

Basic Kitchen continues to impress.

The bowls were amazing. My wife had the Falafel Bowl, and it was absolutely delicious. Super fresh, perfectly balanced, and very filling without feeling heavy.

The house-made hot sauce deserves a special mention. Incredible flavor with the right amount of heat. It elevated the entire dish.

You can really tell they use very clean, high-quality ingredients, and there are plenty of great options for vegetarians. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared.

Between the food quality, cleanliness, and overall experience, this place truly lives up to the hype. Highly recommended if you are in Charleston.

My wife and I had a great experience. (We weren’t alone as this Thursday 7pm evening had the place filled with the young and beautiful people of Charleston.) Everyone who served us—Bella, Jason, Logan, and Thomas in the back—was a professional in the highest sense of the word. They were friendly, efficient, and on top of it. The food was all simply wonderful. My wife’s swordfish special left her essentially speechless, marveling at all the flavors. My naughty burger and sweet potato fries were top of the line. We finished the evening with a chocolate tanini tart that was pure decadence on a plate. Our highest rating across the board.

I had a weekend trip to Charleston. I was looking for vegan/ vegetarian & gluten-free options and this place popped up, Basic Kitchen.
We ordered to go as walk up without reservations would be an hour wait. The food was absolutely delicious!

This is a must if you are vegan/plant based!
My boyfriend and I ordered the cauliflower wings to share and they were a 10/10, the vegan ranch with it was amazing.
I had the basic bowl and my bf got the veggie burger. The bowl was great, the green sauce tied it all together. The burger was decent, but I would stick to a bowl or salad.
The sweet potato fries were also very good, would recommend.
It was busy but we didn’t wait too long for our food and the service was excellent.

Weird thing. I just reviewed the meal receipt. There’s a 3% service charge. It’s not explained except to say it’s not a tip. No mention on the menu or postings or from the server. It doesn’t change the meal quality but it does suggest the need for a drop in service score. If this is just a way to raise prices without reprinting the menus, say so.

Basic Kitchen isn’t basic. We enjoyed lunch at this casual restaurant featuring bowls, burgers and salads. Get the sweet potato fries as an appetizer. Service was very good. The location is a little noisy but conversation is possible the dining area is well lit. Wine and beer are available.

UPDATE ON THIS REVIEW.
We were reluctant to share one fact about this visit because we thought they would do the right thing if we stayed quiet, but….they didn’t. They served us tea in a faulty tea pot. We were served 2 tea pots and as one of us tried to pour it in the glass, it spilled out onto the table and through the slates on onto one of the people in our party. We tried to see if it was human error or not. It was a design flaw or something and it happened to us again with the second pot. Now, we understand that things happen and when we told the manager, he explained something about the problem, apologized and walked away. When we got our bill, we were charged for BOTH teas, even though most spilled out onto the table and feet of our party.

The fact thst they didn’t remove the charge was acceptable but then, when we were at the airport, both my daughter and I had flush red faces, redness on our legs and our ears. I, personally, do not have ANY allergies. We tried to figure it out and realized that we had been served the same WRONG juice that we ordered. The juice we ordered and were “served” had lemon, apple and carrot. It wasn’t supposed to have ginger or cayenne. What i noticed when drinking the drink was how spicy it was. The juice combination ordered did not have those ingredients. Both of us were served the same incorrect juice and we believe that the juice contained ginger and cayenne or something we were not informed about in advance. We both took benadryl and the rashes went away. My cognitive skills for traveling back home, also disappeared and we had to travel groggy. I’m disappointed that this happened and we will not be returning to this restaurant ever again. As for the response to this review, apologize all you want and respond to this post, but the damage is done.

Great vegan options and coffee/golden milk latte. Everything was delicious and the corn ribs were incredible! They also had a pretty interesting wine list that I wished I was able to sample.
