Middle of the afternoon in West Union, three other fast food choices with near- empty parking lots were in sight, but things were hopping at the Barrel! Why? Onion rings. Light golden batter, crispy but not so much as to mask the flavor of the onion. I thought a medium order would be enough but we would’ve gladly eaten twice as much. Yes it’s an oldie, but the (tiny) bathroom was super clean, and the half- barrel planters a nice touch. We’ll be back to sample the broasted chicken.

We had a great experience. I grew up on Clear Lake IA and had the Barrel Drive In all the time. It was fun to go and have that experience again now that Clear Lake doesn’t have it anymore. Thanks for giving me a bit of my childhood back.

I absolutely suggest the onion rings they are the best. I thought since they were so good I should try something else. I was handed a dry pork tenderloin on a dry bun when I asked doesn’t anything come on it I was told that’s the way it comes. I contacted management when I left and was told all there sandwich’s come plain unless you ask. There is no way a customer would know this. I want everyone to know you have to ask or it’s completely dry. Insane very disappointing for a restaurant that has so many travelers stop at. Dumbfounded

This place was full of car so we decided to give it a try… after trying i have no clue why they were full.
The food was terrible. fries, bland and soggy. chicken tenders, bland and soft. burger was a frozen patty that had no flavor. mozz sticks soggy. cheese curds were decent. no marinara dipping sauce, ranch was warm.
truthfully if you want fried frozen food you could make better at home even in just an air fryer. definitely would be crisper that’s for sure! however the staff was friendly.

Fun throw back 50s style drive in. The car hop took our order and delivered our food piping hot. She was very prompt, efficient and helpful with suggestions about our order.

Bought a bucket of chicken (10) and potato wedges. The chicken and the potato were so dry and some of it were burned. I could say also that they’re expensive for the one i ordered.
