Reviews
Wasn’t too busy as we arrived, maybe 10-15 other people at the actual restaurant. I started by ordering dirty martini and my wife got a mocktail. Both were great! Took a little while to get the drinks but we noticed the outside bars were pretty packed outside the restaurant in the lobby area.
We started our food with lobster bisque and some house soup and both were very good. Started to notice the service was getting a little slow as it took around 20 minutes to get back to us to take out main order or even ask how the soup were. We chalked it up to day before valentines other people probably have the same idea as us to beat the rush. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case, I ordered the b&d wagyu as it came with potato puree for a side then for my wife she got the Wagyu short ribs and we split the Brussel sprouts. It took a little while for the meal to come out and it was placed down and the waitress immediately walked away. Problem was they got my order completely wrong. We didn’t see her again for another 20 minutes which I obviously ate my food by then cause we were hungry and it was great, but not what I ordered at all. When we finally saw her again I explained it wasn’t what I ordered and she thought I said the Wagyu ribeye which I did but I was brought a plain ribeye wasn’t the b&d signature cause it had no sides or sauce.
All in all the food was great but the service definitely lacks hence the 4/5 rating. It’s customary to come back within a few minutes to ask how we’re doing or if everything’s good for this reason exactly. Good service is key at places like this!
The modern deco dining room was big, clean and beautiful, with low lighting. We were sat immediately by our host at a comfortable booth. Our server was considerate & courteous. We started by sharing a Peach & Burrata Salad, and for the main course we ordered the smoked Turkey Avocado BLT with truffle parmesan fries, a side order of grilled broccolini, the Ultimate Chicken Fried Steak with whipped gold mash potato and house made jalapeño gravy, and a Elysian Space Dust IPA. All the food was phenomenal. This was probably the best Chicken Fried Steak I’ve ever had, perfectly breaded & fried. This was one of the best meals we had on our 10 day road trip. I would be surprised if BARREL & DERRICK wasn’t the best restaurant in all of Odessa. We spent $113.66 including tip, and it was worth every penny.
Thank you, chef.
After being seated, we waited about 35 minutes just to have our drink order taken. I wasn’t quite ready to order, but my partner ordered a Coke Zero, which was brought out immediately. However, the server didn’t ask for my drink order at that time. It then took nearly 50 more minutes for him to return and take our food order. During that time, he repeatedly passed by our table and continued serving the surrounding tables while completely overlooking us. The two tables next to us had already received their second course before our order was even taken.
Once our order was finally placed, it took another 30 minutes for the food to arrive. I ordered a spicy strawberry margarita mocktail, but it tasted more like jalapeño-infused water. I also had to remind the server to bring my partner’s Coke Zero, which he had forgotten — that took an additional 15–20 minutes to arrive.
Overall, most of the courses were underwhelming. The only standout dishes were the ribeye fillet and the black cod. The desserts were decent, but nothing particularly memorable.
Just be aware of the additional service charge that is automatically added to the final bill. The bill total over $400. Highly do not recommend.
FOOD: Presentation was wonderful, the entrees were well portioned, very flavorful. The prices are reasonable
SERVICE: Fantastic, from the hotel staff to the restaurant staff absolutely superb, sweet, kind, polite, attentive, and respectful.
ATMOSPHERE: depending on the occasion, for me it was a romantic and elegant atmosphere.
Update: I called to speak with a manager about my experience. Every staff that picked up the phone was rude. A manager Scott Derby, the director of food and beverage there answered the phone rudely, saying “Yeah!” “Who is this?” I responded, “I would like to speak to your manager because this is not starting off well. He responded, You want to speak to my manager because of? Who is this regarding?” I explained, “You answered the phone rudely. I no longer want to speak with you.” He hung up in my face.
