Portillo’s in Chicago is more than just a restaurant; it’s a vibrant echo of the city’s rich history and culinary innovation. As the original location, established by Dick Portillo, Portillo’s has evolved dramatically from
his humble hot dog stand, into a Chicago institution. The menu is a delightful showcase of Chicago classics, featuring some of the finest pasta and the renowned Italian beef sandwiches that have become a city staple. Not to be overlooked is Portillo’s own Chicago dog, a masterpiece of flavor and tradition. Each item is crafted with care, ensuring a memorable dining experience. The bar boasts an impressive selection of the coldest, freshest tap beer, perfectly complementing the savory dishes. And for those with a sweet tooth, the cakes and pies offer a delicious finale to any meal.
What sets this location apart is not just the exceptional food but also the outstanding service. The staff are hard working, friendly, and embody the spirit of Portillo’s & Barnelli’s. With the added convenience of a drive-through, it’s easier than ever to indulge in these iconic flavors. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, this Portillo’s location is a must-try, offering an unparalleled taste of Chicago’s culinary heritage.

First of all, I ordered the Penne Diavolo from the kiosk and this is what I got served. Take a look at the picture they advertised and tell me I didn’t get catfished. Also, they claim to call out our order number, but that is only Portillo’s calling out on the walkie. So our food had been ready for 20 min at the other pick-up, and we were unaware. With a kiosk system, we should be able to get text alerts to know when orders are ready. Poor system. Disappointed.

honestly a nice concept but i just cannot wrap my head around the fact that i sat inside a restaurant and ate off plastic containers with individually plastic sealed plastic cutlery which i got handed inside a plastic bag with a side of big plastic cups for my drinks. the staff was kinda rude, especially after they messed up my order ?!, and the atmosphere was quite literally trashed by the amount of waste i was surrounded by. the foud itself was mediocre at best.

Barnelli’s Pasta Bowl on Ontario is my go-to when I’m craving comfort food downtown. I usually get the Rigatoni alla Vodka with a side of garlic bread and a slice of their chocolate cake. The pasta’s always cooked just right, and the vodka sauce has that perfect creamy-tomato balance. The chocolate cake is rich and moist. Service is quick, and the retro vibe adds to the charm. All in, I spend around $25. Solid spot for a satisfying meal.

Barnelli’s Pasta Bowl is that classic Chicago spot where you can grab a solid, no-frills Italian meal without breaking the bank. I stopped in and got the baked mostaccioli with meat sauce (around $12), and it hit the spot—cheesy, saucy, and just the right amount of crispy edges. Also grabbed a side of garlic bread, because why not? The portions are generous, and the flavors are legit. The vibe inside is old-school but in a fun, nostalgic way—feels like a mix of a diner and an Italian grandma’s kitchen. If you’re looking for quick, comforting pasta that actually tastes homemade, this is the move!

One of my favorite locations that never misses. The food was great and the service was fast. It was a little disturbing to see a security guard at the door.

Excellent Italian cuisine is available at Barnelli’s Pasta Bowl in a quick-service setting. The restaurant’s interior is distinctly “Chicago,” with artifacts and relics from the city’s past. Due to the fact that the restaurant and Portillo’s share a building, their menu is extensive. The chicken parmesan sandwich was delicious. Expect a crowd if you go for lunch because this is a well-liked local lunch spot.

I had a chicken pasta in white sauce and my friend had a pizza. Both were incredibly tasty. The ingredients in the pasta were so fresh! So delicious… and the atmosphere is nice, something like a market place with a lot of cool items on display. Also great value for money. Highly recommended.
