Bar-Q has been on my list for a while, so we finally stopped in for lunch around 12:30 the on a Sunday. First impression was the space. It’s clean, open, and spacious.

We ordered a little bit of everything. The brisket was the highlight for me. It was tender, flavorful, and honestly just as good as ZZQ in my opinion. That says a lot because ZZQ has been a local favorite for years. The brisket had great smoke and didn’t need any sauce. I prefer tasting the meat on its own, and this definitely stood up without being drenched.

The spare ribs were very good. The sausage was solid, not my favorite on the table because I don’t enjoy sausage that’s ground too fine on the inside but it had good snap and still enjoyable. The buffalo ranch fried chicken sandwich was surprisingly a strong contender for a BBQ spot. We also tried the burrito, which ended up being very good and massive.

For sides, the collard greens were awesome and full of flavor. The cornbread was also excellent and paired perfectly with the meats. The potato salad was okay. It wasn’t bad, it just didn’t stand out compared to everything else.

We were a little disappointed that the pork belly was not ready yet, especially since we were there at 12:30. I was looking forward to trying it. There also were no desserts on the menu that day, which felt like a bit of a missed opportunity after a heavy BBQ meal.

The sauces were pretty good, but I didn’t use much since I like to enjoy the natural flavor of the barbecue itself.

Overall, it was a really solid experience. Great brisket, strong sides, and a comfortable space. I will definitely be back, especially to try the pork belly next time.

Food was great, we wanted to find a new Black owned restaurant and found this. I loved my smack and cheese brisket sandwich, the fries were crispy. My friend had the chicken sandwich which she quickly devoured it along with the really moist sweet potato cornbread. She also had the Mac and cheese and enjoyed it.

Definitely one of the best food experiences I’ve had so his month! We were greeted with a smile! Welcomed .. offed assistance with questions! Food was delicious. Clean with a cool down home ambiance. Took less than 15 mins for food to come out . Greens and pork ribs were my favorite however everything we had was AT LEAST an 8/10. The sweet potatoes tho delicious, were my least favorite as they do have a slight taste of orange that I do not prefer. They have draft pineapple cream soda that was delicious also if you’re a fan. Overall great experience.. we will be back!!

P.s. This is a black owned establishment

Wow was this a fantastic BBQ meal. Pulled pork sandwich, Mac & Cheese loved them. Hushpuppies were very fresh and tasty. Several different sauces to choice from and honey butter for the hushpuppies! Wife loved the fried okra and dipping sauce.

The vibe was immaculate, I loved everyone’s warm energy and even the other customers had such good energy to them! It’s hard to be unhappy with such good food!

The food was amazing, the pork belly bites were to die for and the Mac and cheese tasted like my memaw made it. 10/10 would come back!

Jayme and the gang at Bar Q did not disappoint today. We tried a variety of there meats and sides. The pulled pork, ribs, links, and brisket were delicious. The sides, (Wow) collard greens, cole slaw, mac and cheese, christmas beans and sweet potato corn bread were fantastic. The pickled jalapeños, cucumbers and looked loke beets were very good and we all enjoyed them. A nice variety of beer and I enjoyed one of the ciders myself. Everyone was super nice and helpful. Talked to Jamie about his food and atmosphere being excellent. We enjoyed all of the food and bought more to take home.

Black family owned BBQ place near the museum district in the cut was worth the drive. Greeted at the door, helped in ordering, and smiles along the way. A Florida sister and brother own this spot, giving new flavors and large portions for the experience. All the meats were spectacular (links, ribs, brisket), smack n cheese was great, and the cornbread was a nice surprise (made with sweet potatoes). Only suggestion would be to let the patrons know about the cornbread as its not the traditional kind (still was good though, so no complaints). Limeade was one of the best I have tasted in RVA (gotta try the passion fruit or watermelon flavor when you go). This will be on my frequent visit list for sure! Highly recommend!

Delicious, tender, and tasty barbecue. We enjoyed our dinner and look forward to our next visit. I can’t determine if the beef rib or pulled pork was my favorite. Everything was scrumptious and the staff was southern sweetness. ❤️

The BBQ and food here are amazing—absolutely worth the drive. We came all the way from Norfolk and it did not disappoint. We had the brisket, chicken, mac & cheese, and hush puppies, and everything was excellent. The French fries were perfectly crispy and well-seasoned. We’ll definitely be back!

We went to get takeout from this place on a Saturday around 5:30 pm. When we got there, the place was completely empty and we were promptly informed they were out of all the barbecue sauce except a sweet one that was borderline inedible. It didn’t even pour out — it was thick and gelatinous and it needed to be spread with a knife. We got something described as “Christmas beans” but they were quite clearly canned baked beans. We ordered slaw and it was not included in the order. The pulled pork stuck together like a web, connected by fat veins. We got hush puppies and they were soggy from sitting in a puddle of butter goo. Butter is not my choice of condiment for a hush puppy, so I don’t know why it was there without my request. They’re already deep fried. This place has great reviews so we were really excited to try it, but I wish we never heard of it. Would absolutely never go back. Highly recommend going to ZZQ or Smohk instead. Even a chain like Mission is a million times better.
