After getting laid off from Gramercy Tavern during the pandemic, Lauren started working on her own recipes featuring Southeast Asian flavors in classic French pastries. She also made traditional Vietnamese desserts that she couldn’t find in New York City. After three years of selling “bánh boxes” (assorted pastry boxes), popping-up with restaurants around New York City, Philadelphia, and Seattle, Bánh by Lauren found a home at 42 Market Street in Chinatown. Lauren & team are excited to serve the community for years to come. The menu highlights Southeast Asian flavors in French and American pastries, traditional Vietnamese sweets as well as coffee drinks inspired by Lauren’s travels to Vietnam alongside a specialty coffee menu.

Pleasantly surprised. Stopped in here while waiting for my golden dinner order

The molasses lime aid. Sweet but also SOURR. Prepare for that, but enjoyable to me.
The choco chip cookie – I was lucky to get one that had just hit the cooling rack and was still warm. Nice crispy edges with a soft center. Good salt. It was thin but still had a cakey taste. A little sprinkle of salt on the top.

The scone – was good. I think it could do with a salt sprinkle on top. Think I’ll go home and warm it up

Thai tea chiffon – yum! Idk what I was expecting but it was light and fluffy. The perfect amount of sweet. A treat that won’t leave you feeling like your gorged yourself.

Got the 6 inch thai tea chiffon cake and the pandan coffee cake for friendsgiving.

The thai tea cake was layered beautifully and it was not too sweet which I really loved. I felt like the Thai tea flavor could’ve been a little bit more pronounced, but other than that, my friends, and I had no complaints and ate the whole cake in one sitting. I would say the 6 inch was the perfect size for 3-4 people. I guess other than the Thai tea flavor being a little bit too subtle, I do think the pricing does not match the size or quantity that you get. It’s about $80 for the 6 inch, I personally wouldn’t get it again, but maybe if it was $50 i could justify it.

The pandan coffee cake was spectacular. Absolutely nothing bad to say about it, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. It had the perfect amount of pan and flavor with the perfect coffee cake texture. The pre-order comes with four slices and I honestly could’ve ate all four by myself. I will definitely be ordering these again. $20 for 4 pieces is also a bit pricey, but I found it to be worth it. I’ve gotten it multiple times since.

Customer service is also wonderful. They get very crowded but all the employees are super kind and considerate and honestly very fast.

We ordered the salted cream coffee and really enjoyed it. I’d give it an 8/10. It was very good and flavorful, with a smooth, creamy foam that paired well with the coffee. The coffee itself had a pleasant acidic note that kept it from tasting too heavy.

We also tried the pandan cake, which was nice and soft with a spongy texture, similar to boba. I would recommend it if you enjoy jelly-like desserts.

One of my go-to cafe on the LES This small vietnamese cafe serves the one and only honey comb cake, a chewy, pandan infused cake. Everything here can be made with pandan, from cake, latte, and matcha latte.
They also have wifi and restroom. But the space may be too small to sit here for too long. It is packed on the weekend.

We came by for some coffee and dessert and stayed for a relaxing no frills vibes. There were tables both inside and outside though spots are limited. We tried the pandan latte, pandan macaroon, pandan banh bo nuong, and salt coffee. My friend enjoyed the pandan latte and I think the salt coffee needs a bit more work (too salty, and the salt cream layer needs to be richer, it was dissipating too fast). The dessert was a bit too sweet for me iykyk but maybe i’ll come back for chocolate chip cookie next time?

Le sigh. It’s good enough, but it’s not really on the level of Vietnamese coffee that it should be.

Go to Le Phin, which is good enough for New York or visit Cali Vietnamese coffee shops like Phin smith or Trung Nguyên Legend Café or a few others… the balance of the coffee here is missing some things.

The coffee is too bitter without being potent enough. The flavor of the drink overall is too sweet after you mix it without the coffee being the main character in the show.

The cake portions are a little Wild in that they are too small.

I ordered the pandan honeycomb cake and the pandan chiffon. For $5, the pandan honeycomb cake has good texture and bounce but it’s lacking the pandan flavor. Considering the price and the size which is very small for $5, I expect a heavier/distinctive pandan flavor. For $13, the pandan chiffon is waaaaaayyyyyyyyy overpriced. It’s good but definitely not worth $13.
I also ordered pandan matcha latte, 0 pandan flavor. The matcha was not well made at all, there’s still lumps of matcha powder at the bottom of the cup. If you drink matcha, you know what I’m talking about. For $6 matcha, I expect better.
All in all, the food and drink definitely looks pretty and enticing. But definitely found them to be lackluster especially given the price point.

The staff and space were welcoming.
Finally got to stop by again after a couple years of busywork. We appreciate that the menu items are not too sweet.

Recommend the following items:
– Banh Bo Nuong
– Banh Cam
– Chocolate Chip Cookie
– Pandan Matcha Latte
– Molasses Limeade

Both the Banh Bo Nuong and the Banh Cam have a thin crust that is light and crispy with a lovely soft, bouncy interior.

I absolutely love the Chocolate Chip Cookie. It is well-balanced, slightly crispy on the outside and fudgey on the inside. Usually, I’m not a fan of maldon salt on desserts but it is great here!

Bought a loaf of the Banh Bo Nuong to share with friends and family before leaving.

We had the pandan honeycomb cake (the reason we went in the first place) the thai tea chiffon cake, and a pandan matcha latte. both pastries were delicately flavored. the honeycomb cake was less sweet but still had a nice fragrance of pandan and an interesting texture. the chiffon cake was soft and pillowy, and the thai tea flavor was spot on. this place was listed in the New York Times’ list of the best pastries in the city, and it didn’t disappoint.

Stopped in with my family on the Sunday of LDW at around 10 AM. It’s a small café but luckily we were able to get some seats and even manage to fit a stroller in there. We ordered a bunch of pastries to share/try: the honeycomb cake, pandan coffee cake, baked cassava cake, and both of the scones (morning glory + chili + garlic + cheddar and Chinese sausage + cheddar + chives). I normally like savory more but the sweets here were better than the scones. I really liked the pandan flavoring of the cakes. The scones were dry and expensive at $8 a pop! For drinks, I had the black sesame latte, which I didn’t care for – it was very gritty and the bits would get stuck in my throat.

I don’t think this is a place I’d come back to, but I’m glad I got the chance to check it out.
