Travis the owner is awesome and goes above and beyond.
Our first time the pizza was under cooked. So that was a bummer.
We also grabbed pizza as we headed out and we asked to cook it longer. Much much better!
So if you need food past 8 or just pizza. Go here.
Pepperoni, Jalapeño and pineapple was a favorite.
Sausage, Pepperoni, green pepper, pineapple, olive was also a good one.
Then just veggie.
as 2 vegetarians, finding options other than a beyond burger or Brussels sprouts can be hard…so when in doubt, we pizza it AHT. we’ve become self proclaimed pizza snobs if you will.
that being said, I’ve had a lot of pizza in my life all over the country…and this place made it in my top 5. we got the onion and mushrooms. the diced toppings is the only way I wanna eat mushrooms on my pizza anymore.
besides the 5/5 pizza. The front of the store was so aesthetically pleasing and clean with plenty of table space outside to eat.
the ZA Specialists were all very nice, showed me the pizza before handing it off, and brought us out plates and napkins as we began eating like cavemen without second thought.
Highly Recommended!!!:)
This is why we were so excited to find a solid pizza outfit here on the Big Island. It’s in Waikoloa which is about 40 minutes north of Kailua-Kona. Balsimo’s Pizza is a small store-front with a good, solid, decent pizza. Travis is the owner (we assume) and was very nice to deal with.
Pros: Pizza is very good. Not phenomenal by Seattle, Portland, Chicago, New York, standards. But for Hawaii, and we mean the entire state of Hawaii, it’s one of the best we’ve found.
Crust was tasty, light, and had a nice crisp where it should and a nice chew where it should. The sauce was good with a touch of sweetness, toppings were all quality. There is a chain outfit just a few doors away and this is MUCH better than that cardboard.
I walked in and ordered, although it looks like most pre-order. From the time I ordered until I walked away, it was only 15-20 minutes.
Cons: The pie was slightly undercooked. Could have gone another minute or maybe two. Maybe he’s feeling the time-pressure to compete with the chain next door, but I would encourage you to take just an extra minute to get that crust fully cooked.
Nitpicking now, but the sauce could have been brought out closer to the edge. A bit too much crust for our tastes. Between that and cooking slightly longer, I think it would have been very good.
Suuuuper nitpicking, but I hope that they give it a try… the dough could have had just a touch more Kosher salt to bring out more flavor.
Limited selection of toppings. They don’t offer salami… can you believe that? Their only onion option is red, not sweet (no Walla Walla Sweets, not even Maui Sweets). The toppings they do offer were all high quality.
No opinion (FYI only): No seating. It’s entirely take-away.
Only one size. It’s about 12” I’d guess. It was fine for the two of us, but a family might order two. Just know that they only have one size.
The one-size and the take-out-only are both fine with us, so not a big deal. It would be nice to have a few more toppings options though.
Overall it was a very pleasant experience and I would encourage you to give them a try. We would return. Their pizza is very good, they are friendly, the turn-around is quick (too quick?), and the view while waiting is wonderful.
We wish them the best of luck, and we especially wish that they can chase out the “D” chain restaurant just a few doors away from them… yuck!
