I originally wanted Indian food and when I searched in Google, this place also came up. I was curious so I started looking at the menu and reading reviews. It’s a small Bosnian store and cafe. As soon as I saw “Burek” listed on the menu, I wanted to go. I loved having Serbian burek and I haven’t had it in many years. Looked up the difference between the two and they were similar so I wanted to try it.

The place is super small. Because we were not from around here, we stood in line and waited to get to counter. There was one person ahead at the counter and it was taking quite some time checking out some grocery items. I didn’t realize I could’ve just sat down at a table like some other group did when they came in (or maybe they’re just regulars so they seated themselves).

The burek was a long wait because it needed to be baked. We were told this and we were okay with the wait. The woman (most likely the owner) said 25mins but it didn’t seem as long. We got our own drinks from the case and waited for the burek. My husband didn’t know what to expect. He’s never had it before and I’ve only had a Serbian version. He was very impressed with it as was I. The flavor was so good, the crust was very crispy, the meat seemed very fresh. The best food we had on our trip. My husband was still talking about it the next day.

For the burek, 2 soda cans and a pack of cookies from the grocery shelf, it was only $18. When I used my card, she just scanned and pulled out the receipt and was about to put it away. I asked for the copy so I could tip her. I don’t think she was expecting a tip for making and serving the food. We always tip more when we get good service and especially if we share a dish because we still made a mess for 2 people.

One burek was enough to feed 2-3 people. We consumed almost all of it, but it could’ve easily been shared among 3. We just kept eating.

Only been here once but enjoyed my meal. A rare opportunity to eat traditional Balkan type food in an authentic atmosphere in the Cedar Valley. If you enjoy trying new things and going off the beaten path then I highly recommend.

Balkan Cafe has incredible food. We got the Balkan burger for each of us and it’s huge! You could easily split it between 2 people. The patty they make is homemade as well as the bun. The bun was super crispy and tasty, and it tasted like sourdough bread. The owner is super nice and the food comes out quickly. We highly recommend this place if you’re stopping through Waterloo or are near the area!

This place was my introduction to authentic Bosnian food and it was a delicious and decadent experience. It is so amazing that Waterloo has such a gem in this town. I was recommended to go here by a Bosnian friend of mine in Cedar Rapids and I am so glad I listened. They have fresh items made in the morning like the Burke. It is so soft and savory. They also serve really good Turkish coffee. The searing is limited because of the small space but the vibes give you the “back home” type of feeling.

We were struggling to find a good place to eat when passing through Iowa, and then we stumbled across this place. Simple menu with complex flavors. We both got the Balkan burger and we LOVED IT! Everything tasted so fresh and it was exactly what we were looking to fill our stomachs with. The owner was super nice too! Highly recommend this place!

Don’t miss it! This very unassuming, small cafe has food to die for. Everything we had was exceptional, if unpronounceable. The sausage in a kind of Balkan bun was delicious, and the burger was the same. They also gave us an astonishingly good bean soup to try with the fluffiest bread and a delicate slaw to accompany it. The portions are very generous but the bill is a lovely surprise. Worth a detour for!!

As an over the road truck driver, I am always looking for something good to eat. I found these guys on google and gave them a call. They were incredibly friendly, answered all my questions, and took my order. When I arrived I was greeted by a really kind older gentleman. My food was there waiting for me, and genuinely it was some of the best Bosnian food I have had in the U.S. if you’re ever nearby give these guys a call, I can’t wait to roll through here again so I can stop by
