Reviews
Back Forty Texas BBQ is a well-known family restaurant in Pleasant Hill, celebrated for its hearty Texas-style barbecue. I visited on a Saturday at noon, and while it wasn’t too busy, I noticed they also have private rooms perfect for large family gatherings or birthday celebrations—a warm touch that makes the place feel welcoming.
The restaurant has an old-school Texas charm, with rustic wood tables, a round bar setup, and plenty of Texas-inspired decorations like stickers and vintage-style details. The garden with flowers and greenery outside adds to the atmosphere, evoking the look and feel of a classic Texas roadhouse.
For appetizers, we ordered the Texas Wings, and the staff kindly let us have sauces on the side. We sampled the original mild BBQ, kickin’ honey garlic, and buffalo sauces, all of which paired well with the wings. The wings themselves were crispy outside and tender inside, with carrots and celery served alongside.
For the main course, we went with The Grand Pit combo, which includes three smoked meats and two signature sides.
The pulled pork was flavorful, especially the fully pulled portions, though the cubed pieces were a bit tougher.
The beef brisket can be ordered lean or juicy; we tried the lean, which had less fat but also less moisture—I’d recommend going for the juicy cut for more tenderness.
The pork ribs were generous in size but slightly hard to pull off the bone, so perhaps a little more cooking time would make them perfect.
As for sides, the seasonal veggies were a light mix of broccoli, cucumber, and zucchini, though the portion was small. The chef’s special tortilla soup was excellent, with tortillas, chicken, onion, and corn coming together in a flavorful broth—one of the highlights of the meal.
The portions were large enough that two meat lovers couldn’t quite finish everything, so we happily took some to-go. Given the combo deals, the pricing felt reasonable. There’s also plenty of parking available and the restaurant is ADA-accessible, making it convenient for all visitors.
Overall, Back Forty Texas BBQ delivers well-prepared meats, warm Texas décor, and a family-friendly atmosphere. It’s a great spot for BBQ fans, whether you’re stopping in for wings and a drink at the bar or enjoying a full meal with family and friends.

The brisket was dry and cold. My salad was brown and wilted, and although I ordered a chicken breast, I was given a wing instead. The “hot link” was essentially a hot dog. The scalloped potatoes were horrible. For the amount of money we spent, the overall quality was disappointing.
What was most frustrating happened at payment. The server tapped my card for me, selected a 20% tip without asking, handed the machine back, and told me to sign while standing over my shoulder. I want to be clear: I am typically an over-tipper. I used to work as a server and understand how important gratuities are. Even if the food is not great, I usually tip 25% or more. However, having the tip preselected without my consent was inappropriate and left me uncomfortable. At that point, I just wanted to leave.
This was not my first time dining here, which makes the experience even more disappointing.
The food was good, decent portions, and came relatively quickly. I had the 3 meat platter: juicy brisket, pulled pork, and 4 pork ribs. The pulled pork was pretty good, but some of the fat wasn’t removed. The ribs were meatier than I am use to when going out (a very good thing!) and there weren’t “burned to a crisp”. The brisket was juicy and very good tasting. I had the beans and Onion Rings as my sides.
Only 4 stars for the food was due to the meats being a little bland; well smoked, decent seasoning, but missing something. The beans were “OK”, but like the meat, missing something. Onion rings were wonderful with a light seasoning (again only slight flavor addition) but large and the onion didn’t pull through the outer coating.
They do not “Barbeque” really. They are really a “smoke house” (there is a difference) that only serves the “sauce” on the side for these 3 meats I had. I do not know about the “chicken”.
They are VERY good for what they do, I was just looking for something else I guess.
The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, the service was friendly and fast, and overall everything came together for a great dining experience. I’ll definitely be recommending this spot to friends and family, and I can’t wait to come back!
I also had to choose a side. I asked how the cornbread was and if it was moist (in my experience most cornbread is awful) and Deanna vouched for it and said it comes with honey butter. I ordered the cornbread.
The burger came out hot and tasty. The cornbread was generously portions and moist and flavorful.
This place knows what they’re doing. You need to come here.
Will be back and plan to entertain clients here for lunches/dinners im the coming months in my new job.
I mention the corn bread? It was also delicious. Fresh and moist with a yummy honey butter on the side. I’m looking forward to going back here again!
We will never suggest this restaurant to any of our friends or family. Nor will we ever return. This place was not it at all!!
