Baan Mae — meaning Mom’s House in Lao — is a Lao woman–owned restaurant in the heart of Shaw. Created by Chef Seng Luangrath, the visionary behind Thip Khao and Padaek, Baan Mae is a heartfelt homage to home, heritage, and the women who inspire her cooking. The menu draws on deep nostalgia and boundless creativity, reimagining some of Chef Seng’s favorite dishes from across Southeast Asia. Each dish reflects the warmth of her mother’s kitchen and the soul of Lao home cooking — vibrant, comforting, and full of love.

The food is outstanding, everything we had well surpassed our expectations and we were left wondering what was in the food we were eating and how could each bite be so tasty.
We were celebrating our anniversary and Ole comped a green tea gelato for us, which was the best way to end such a tasty meal.
I will attach some pictures of the food we had, everything we ordered was a twelve out of ten
The chef behind this Laotian spot in Shaw learned how to cook at a refugee camp in Thailand. As you scan the menu, you’ll see the use of the word “Mom.” The chef is mom and she’s worth having in your family.
For food, the dishes are unique, but pull from familiar flavors like curries and jasmine rice. An example of this is the red curry. Get it with beef brisket, which pairs well with the lychee and eggplant in the dish. It’s excellent! To start, the salmon skewers are simple, but perfectly done and dipped in chimichurri sauce. For dessert, get the white gelato on black sesame sticky rice. So good!
To drink, their cocktails are unique and come bitter, sour, or a tad sweet depending on how you like it.
Service is excellent. The space is small and it can get crowded, but the staff still create a warm atmosphere. It’s a beautiful space!
For our mains, the Thom Khem ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and deeply flavorful, and the shrimp pad see eaw had the softest, most perfectly cooked noodles. Every dish felt intentional and impeccably executed.
The cocktails weren’t our favorites, but the food is truly the star here. This restaurant is easily a top contender for one of the best in DC. Our server was excellent, attentive, and full of great recommendations.
I had to write this review because I was still thinking about the food the next day and already planning my return.
Service at the bar was attentive and we never went more than 30 seconds with empty water glasses. It’s a smallish restaurant, but tables turn over quickly — we waited about 15 minutes for a table for 2 at about 7PM on a Saturday. They take InKind for payment as
