One of the better quality sushi options in mid-city. Price was right and staff were great.
We got some nigiri but the hand rolls are where it is at – do not miss!

Wow, I wish I knew about Azai sooner.
My partner and I walked in for a last minute lunch on Christmas day. What stood out to us was how fresh and generous their portions are. Even their dessert mochi is flown in from Japan!
Service is excellent. Efficient, warm, and very welcoming. At one point, we received an extra yellowtail handroll that we didn’t order. Our server made sure was taken care of and that it was on the house.
Special shoutout to Adam for making our holiday extra special! If you’re in the area, make sure to stop by.

So glad I tired this place out! I am shocked by the quality and price point. The yellowtail nigiri was so good and the hand rolls were very good. Spicy Tuna and Scallops were my favorite. The vibe at night was really nice, the lighting was dim but it didn’t feel too dark. It felt classy and high end but also casual. Will absolutely be coming back!

I was taken a little aback when I walked in, a few minutes after they opened, prob 11:35ish, and the firs thing the manager / waiter did was look at his watch to make sure it was past 11:30. That felt incredibly inhospitable. Had it been 11:28 he would have told me to wait outside two more minutes?
At the end comes the bill. The whole 16% surcharge feels wrong, not because of the reason why, but because it’s basically a hidden fee. Just bake it into the menu cost, instead of making us believe that a $7 hand-roll is a $6 hand-roll, but one dollar will be added on the bill. It’s just plain scammy. On top of that, old menus, shown here on google, suggested that tipping was not necessary, while current menus highly recommend tipping.
It’s not the money, it’s the process that is sneaky and distasteful…

Azai Hand Roll Sushi delivers a high-quality food and impressively fast service. The hand rolls are fresh, flavorful, and prepared with speed—perfect for a quick yet satisfying meal. The crispy rice with tuna is especially good—not greasy at all—and the nigiri selections were fresh and well-prepared.
Service is efficient, with food arriving almost immediately after ordering, which makes the whole experience seamless and enjoyable. The manager seems a bit tense but staff are professional.
They charge a 16% service fee, and tipping is separate. This is a bit weird and confusing, given that a lot of handroll restaurants receive services fees “instead” of tips. But Azai seems to indicate that tipping is separate? I was willing to pay because I liked their food.
The only downside is the parking situation—street parking is very limited, and valet service is available but pricey at $20. Still, if you’re looking for great sushi and a fast, professional dining experience, Azai is absolutely worth a visit.

Adam was fantastic, 10/10 food and service. Got the spicy tuna, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and eel. My favorite was the yellowtail, came with a very nice yuzukoshu, but really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

My friend and I had the best lunch here! The owner Adam was super sweet and took so well care of us. The handrolls were probably the best i’ve had in LA! The space is also super nice and beautiful which is a +1
