Road Trips and Good Times.

I grew up in a small Midwest town that had an old-school A&W Root Beer stand right in the center of town. It was the hangout spot after football games and Saturday night cruises on Main St., and to this day A&W is still one of my favorite root beers.

Most of my family now lives in Knoxville, TN, and when I drive up from Florida, I take backroads just to enjoy small-town America. Years ago on one of those drives, I stumbled across Madisonville, TN, which still has an original A&W drive-in. I didn’t even hesitate to stop in because I knew the root beer was going to be great as always.

Ever since, it’s become a tradition. Every trip to Knoxville includes a stop at this A&W, even if I fly in. My family teases me for making a 50-minute drive “just” for root beer, but once they get a sip, they understand. I always leave with two gallon jugs, and somehow it’s never enough once everyone starts asking for a “little taste”.

My nephew and I like to take “road trips” whenever we’re together, and one of our recent adventures was the drive from Knoxville to Madisonville. After he tried the fresh root beer straight from the tap, he smiled and said, “Road trips and good times.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself.

If you ever find yourself about an hour south of Knoxville on 441, take time to stop and treat yourself to some truly delicious, classic A&W Root Beer. It’s worth the drive.

We take a road trip to come here once a month. It’s a nostalgic roadside car hop restaurant. Eating here brings back memories of our childhood. Good food, good service and good value for the money.

I unknowingly came during happy hour. So my food was cheaper. The BLT was great! Bacon cooked perfectly! And the onion rings were also good. Very friendly staff also!

Super tasty root beer floats! 2nd Saturday of each month they have an antique car drive in and you can see all kinds of nice cars.

Love these nostalgic places. We got root beer floats that they inhaled and some cute little corn dog bites that they loved so much we had to order more! Also got a large order of cheese curds. Most of them were delicious but the bigger ones could have used a bit more time in the fryer, still room temperature and the cheese wasn’t melted. There was plenty of parking available and they did have some tables if we didn’t want to eat in the car. The bathroom sketched me out lol. There was a door to the kitchen IN THE BATHROOM. It was locked but I kept thinking at any moment someone would come thru. They should just wall that off! We loved the experience, had perfect service and will return to try more menu items!

We stopped here as all the ones back home have closed. The food was really good and of course had to get a root beer float! All the food we ordered was hot and fresh.

We just stopped for a root beer and for our kids to experience this blast from the past. Luckily for us it was 1/2 price happy hour on drinks. Definitely worth a stop along your route.

Came across this place when I was on my way to Gatlinburg, TN. Now the only thing I had ever seen from A&W was the root beer but I knew for years they had actual restaurants it was just none were by me. So I had to take this opportunity right?…. RIGHT?!

This one in particular we visited I believe I was told was the first one ever built. Pretty cool. Service was good and quick as well.

Now for the food. I just got a burger and fries as you can see here. This was hands down probably the worst fast food burger I have ever had. This thing was tasteless and dry but had a weird aftertaste almost like a school lunch burger (if you know you know). I couldn’t take anymore than 2 bites before I flat out just couldn’t eat it anymore. 1/10

The fries were okay. Crispy with a slightly weird texture and I think that comes from whatever they are battered in. 5/10.

Hands down would absolutely never ever try this place again. Do I regret it? No. I am happy I can actually say I’ve had it but I just don’t ever want to have it again lol.

I came to obviously eat but also kill some time. To my surprise this specific A&W has that old school drive in type of ordering. The California locations that I used to go to didn’t have this setup. Food is made fresh and hot. We really enjoyed the hamburgers and fries. If you come here be sure to order their root beer.
