Somewhat tentative, I finally tried the Augustine Tavern and I’m glad I did! The owners have transformed it into a welcoming, warm establishment with very good food!
I’ll elaborate more after I visit again soon
Happy Hour is a good deal
We have been there twice and would go back.
1) The hostess seated us at our table and then asked us to move after we settled in because they put us at the wrong table. We had to then wait while our table was made ready.
2) Although our server stopped by a couple of times to tell us he’d be right with us, he took longer than normal to put in our order.
3) My husband’s salad came well before appetizers and the shrimp appetizer was tough.
4) My husband’s meal came and after 5-7 minutes of waiting, I had to flag someone down to find out where my meal was. It was a few more minutes before my meal came. They said there was a mixup in the kitchen but the person who brought my husband’s meal should have noticed that I didn’t have my food–she literally dropped his and left.
5) We barely got an apology from the server but they finally took off the happy hour drinks for about $9.
Each situation separately wouldn’t have been a big issue but 5 issues was alot and basically made me upset since I was looking forward to a nice Valentine’s dinner. Other tables seemed fine so guess it was just one of those things but, I have to be honest, I’m not rushing back. This is a relatively expensive restaurant so I think we deserved better.
While the menu selections is terrific, the preparation process can use a bit more polishing. The risotto side dish that we’ve ordered came out luke warm. Also, the steak came out very under cooked. Credit to the management to address these deficiencies immediately after we brought it up to the staff. May want to visit early during the weekend as it does get busy during peak hours.
Baked Clams
Lobster bisque
Dozen oysters ($28)
Seafood fra diavolo ($37) should be $25
Ceasar salad w crab cake ($25), should be $20 with the crab cake
Table bread ($2?!) should be free. Must have recently added that to the menu pricing
Wine and beers
Overall the food was good. Cool venue, I love historic settings. Things I noticed…
Draft beer list can be reconsidered. Lot of lights on draft, then complete opposite of the spectrum with niche high abv on draft (chestnut praline 8.6 which was good). Only one IPA on draft….just such a really random mix of a staple of domestics on draft despite already offering them in bottles / cans then something like a chestnut praline. Maybe offer the stone on draft, or hammerheads, bayheads in md if you want to have more local area stuff on draft, first state, Cape May, jakl, volunteer, 2SP (up and out on tap would be solid), etc.
Seafood fra diavolo…..tasty. good spice level. But $37 for a cereal bowl size? Then you turn around and charge ppl $2 for bread? Do you really need to charge $2 for bread? You need that $2 that bad lol? Looks bad on a menu that you are willing to nickel and dime folks that much when you are pricing a lunch portion size pasta dish at that price. Cheese option btw…was probably kraft in a glass shaker….get some blocks and graters.
Lobster bisque was more like cream of potato with lobster spice….my least favorite. Idk what that was. Like a 3 oz pre portioned bag of potato wedges and cream. Put some seafood in it you can see.
Baked clams were flavorful. Maybe consider a muscles in a garlic white wine option or muscles in a red. Pretty regular staple to have at a tavern.
Oysters were good and priced fair. They did take like 25 mins for some reason when you only have to shuck them and put them on a tray of ice…cute little tobasco bottles btw. Maybe there is only one guy in the back that knows how to shuck, idk.
Ceasar….smidge overpriced as well, but good. Feedback….more of the yellowy / green part of the romaine….which is more bitter when you are serving yellowy green leaves.
Praline from Southern tier was wild. Crazy flavor. Delicious…more of a dessert beer and kinda surprised you guys are pouring pints of that instead of 10 ouncers.
Interesting restaurant furnishing in there. It’s such an interesting layout. The place is huge…huge….idk get some booths, (it is a tavern) its like the furnishing doesn’t match the layout.
What’s with the flat screen showing a picture of a fire going behind the bar? If you have flat screens…put on sports…ESPN… something…not a fake fire for ppl to watch and guy fieri.
Walking past the bathrooms first thing when you enter was a little weird. Kinda the only option though unless you want to rethink the front door patio seating area.
Cool to see the place hire so many college kids.
But for a place that used to be known as a biker bar, and a lot of turnover….I’m pulling for this spot. As of rn though it’s overpriced.
