Review – Au Pied de Cochon

A true Parisian brasserie classic —open 24/7 since 1947— but choose your dishes wisely.

Located in the heart of Les Halles, Au Pied de Cochon is one of those legendary Paris institutions every tourist eventually hears about. Founded in 1947 and famous for being open 24 hours a day, it’s known for traditional French brasserie cuisine, especially dishes centered around pork —as the name suggests. The atmosphere is very “old Paris”: tiled floors, mirrors, brass details, and that lively brasserie energy that feels timeless.

It’s definitely a nice place to go as a tourist, especially if you want a classic, historic setting.

I was seated on the second floor, which was completely empty at the time. Shortly after, another couple arrived and, despite the whole floor being available, they were seated right next to me. It felt a bit odd and unnecessary given the space.

Starter – Os à Moelle

I started with the os à moelle (bone marrow), and it was truly amazing. Rich, indulgent, and perfectly roasted. Spread generously on toasted bread with plenty of salt on top —this is a must-order. Easily the highlight of the meal and worth coming for on its own.

Main – Travers de Porc Confit 14h

For the main, I ordered the Travers de Porc Confit 14h. To be honest, it was disappointing. It had flavor, but it was not tender at all —which is surprising for something advertised as slow-cooked for 14 hours. The portion was also quite small, and it came with a very modest side of fries… which they initially forgot to bring, and I had to ask for. Overall, not worth it.

Dessert – Profiteroles

To finish, I had the profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and melted chocolate. Really good. Classic, generous, comforting —a proper brasserie dessert done right.

Price

The total came to around €50, which in Paris for a historic brasserie is not shocking, but considering the main course, it didn’t fully feel justified.

⭐ Final Verdict

This is a 3-star experience for me. The starter and dessert were excellent and lifted the overall score. The setting is iconic and worth experiencing once, especially for visitors wanting a traditional Paris brasserie atmosphere.

Next time, I would definitely try a different main dish —because when they get it right, they clearly know how to deliver.

We had a lovely time at this restaurant! The French onion soup was absolutely delicious, and they give you nice bread and butter as well, along with some little treats with the bill. The ravioli and the steak were also great! The prices are quite logical as well. Our waiter was very smiley and pleasant! The interior is very elegant, with multiple floors.

We had the best evening! Food was great and service even better! Frank in particular was so friendly and had us laughing a lot when in doubt of choices we were given recommendations and never rushed to order. Wait time was so short but good to note we arrived at 9:15pm. Definitely try the French onion soup but for us the profiteroles stole the show (thanks to Frank for the rec) highly recommend to try when in Paris

The service staff upstairs is amazing—friendly, hard-working, and very accommodating. The hosts downstairs were professional, though they could be a bit warmer and friendlier to guests.

The menu offers a great selection of food, drinks, and desserts. You can find everything from fresh seafood to traditional French cuisine. The marrow bone was perfect, and the razor clams were delicious.

A few dishes could use more seasoning. The escargots lacked enough salt and garlic, and the “Hortense” style pork mussels were a bit bland and needed more spice. As first-time visitors to Paris, we might just be used to a different flavor profile.

The dessert variety is impressive, but they were unfortunately out of crepes. This was disappointing, especially since we were there for a birthday celebration.

Special thanks to our waiter, Franck. He did a great job and made our experience memorable. Overall, I recommend this spot for fellow travelers in Paris.

I had high expectations for this place. I had seen it featured on a cooking show I watch and was really excited to try it. The French Onion soup was just ok. I feel I could make it better (I do pride myself on my cooking skills). The escargot were fine. They are famous for their pig trotter. We got the fried one on the starter menu, and while we did eat it, I can say I won’t ever eat it again, it just wasn’t our cup of tea. I will say the pork loin (dinner) and duck confit were extremely tender and flavorful. (I’m sorry the pictures are of half eaten food, we were hungry and remembered to take pics half way through. By far the highlights of the meal. Dessert was very tasty too, we got the Paris Brest and the profiteroles (on the advice of the assistant server). It was a lovely atmosphere, we were treated very nicely, and I am not sorry we went. It just didn’t blow me away like I expected it to. The pig shaped merengues were a nice touch with the check.

this is my first restaurant in Paris on Christmas night. They were packed but fast to give us a table on third floor. The food came out a little bit slow but I could understand because it was Christmas dinner. I felt lucky being able to dine in. Escargots and Scallop were super, duck confit, oysters and foie gras was just okay. The people who served us were wonderful. We had to come back to them one more time at 2am in the morning before we leave, the server who took our order was very aggressive, he threw utensils around on our table and the table next to us. I understand it’s super late as everyone was yawning. but still wow, knife and forks were just flying around. We finally got another server (on the picture) to help us and he was wonderful. I gotta post this review because of him. I saw him yawning initially but he was still setting up empty table, made sure we felt comfortable and got what we needed and manage to put a smile on his face and made our last dinner in Paris one of the most memorable one. Of course I handed him some cash to show appreciation and happy to see him smiling and waving before we head to the airport

Nice restaurant specializing in seafood (especially oysters) and pork. A good selection of wines are also available.

The service and atmosphere are wonderful. It is a little noisy and busy during dinner.

The pork confit was very good with an excellent sauce. It was a bit drier than I expected.

Definitely worth a visit.

Fabulous !!
Classic of Paris!!! Straight out of a Zola novel… Neon signs!! Paint on the mur! Art nouveau decor! Large bottle of Cognac in the entryway… garçon garçon !
Recommend os à la moelle made with persil and champignon
Etince du porc
So many versions of pork cooked in infinite fashions.
Everyone is eating close together like in a bouillon… but higher class and better food, no wonder they are a staple in Paris
Attention maybe if you are in a hurry and don’t want to wait you should make a reservation for a table !!

A truly Parisian institution. Everything was exceptional, from the depth and variety of the wine list to the quality of the food. Each dish felt generous, authentic, and perfectly executed.
The crème brûlée deserves a special mention: simply fantastic. And considering the overall experience, the prices are more than fair. Classic Paris done right. The only thing is that if you don’t want to wait in line, you need to reserve a table!!
