A true Parisian brasserie classic —open 24/7 since 1947— but choose your dishes wisely.
Located in the heart of Les Halles, Au Pied de Cochon is one of those legendary Paris institutions every tourist eventually hears about. Founded in 1947 and famous for being open 24 hours a day, it’s known for traditional French brasserie cuisine, especially dishes centered around pork —as the name suggests. The atmosphere is very “old Paris”: tiled floors, mirrors, brass details, and that lively brasserie energy that feels timeless.
It’s definitely a nice place to go as a tourist, especially if you want a classic, historic setting.
I was seated on the second floor, which was completely empty at the time. Shortly after, another couple arrived and, despite the whole floor being available, they were seated right next to me. It felt a bit odd and unnecessary given the space.
Starter – Os à Moelle
I started with the os à moelle (bone marrow), and it was truly amazing. Rich, indulgent, and perfectly roasted. Spread generously on toasted bread with plenty of salt on top —this is a must-order. Easily the highlight of the meal and worth coming for on its own.
Main – Travers de Porc Confit 14h
For the main, I ordered the Travers de Porc Confit 14h. To be honest, it was disappointing. It had flavor, but it was not tender at all —which is surprising for something advertised as slow-cooked for 14 hours. The portion was also quite small, and it came with a very modest side of fries… which they initially forgot to bring, and I had to ask for. Overall, not worth it.
Dessert – Profiteroles
To finish, I had the profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and melted chocolate. Really good. Classic, generous, comforting —a proper brasserie dessert done right.
Price
The total came to around €50, which in Paris for a historic brasserie is not shocking, but considering the main course, it didn’t fully feel justified.
⭐ Final Verdict
This is a 3-star experience for me. The starter and dessert were excellent and lifted the overall score. The setting is iconic and worth experiencing once, especially for visitors wanting a traditional Paris brasserie atmosphere.
Next time, I would definitely try a different main dish —because when they get it right, they clearly know how to deliver.
The menu offers a great selection of food, drinks, and desserts. You can find everything from fresh seafood to traditional French cuisine. The marrow bone was perfect, and the razor clams were delicious.
A few dishes could use more seasoning. The escargots lacked enough salt and garlic, and the “Hortense” style pork mussels were a bit bland and needed more spice. As first-time visitors to Paris, we might just be used to a different flavor profile.
The dessert variety is impressive, but they were unfortunately out of crepes. This was disappointing, especially since we were there for a birthday celebration.
Special thanks to our waiter, Franck. He did a great job and made our experience memorable. Overall, I recommend this spot for fellow travelers in Paris.
The service and atmosphere are wonderful. It is a little noisy and busy during dinner.
The pork confit was very good with an excellent sauce. It was a bit drier than I expected.
Definitely worth a visit.
Classic of Paris!!! Straight out of a Zola novel… Neon signs!! Paint on the mur! Art nouveau decor! Large bottle of Cognac in the entryway… garçon garçon !
Recommend os à la moelle made with persil and champignon
Etince du porc
So many versions of pork cooked in infinite fashions.
Everyone is eating close together like in a bouillon… but higher class and better food, no wonder they are a staple in Paris
Attention maybe if you are in a hurry and don’t want to wait you should make a reservation for a table !!
Food was awesome ! The service and waa good. The manager who serve us is always joking and making the atmosphere so nice !
The sweet snack (shape of piglet)… is a nice way to end the dinner .
I love this place.. its environment and service. Love the tenderloin .. we had 2 order of tenderloin and 1 order of pork knuckle
The crème brûlée deserves a special mention: simply fantastic. And considering the overall experience, the prices are more than fair. Classic Paris done right. The only thing is that if you don’t want to wait in line, you need to reserve a table!!
