Since it was my first time here, I already knew I had to order their famous cheeseburger. I recommend getting the single, which is actually a double, and adding a fried egg and bacon. The burger has two thick, juicy patties topped with cheddar, grilled onions, pickles, and a mixture of Dijon mustard and mayo. It was served with a large sweet pickle as well. The combination of seemingly basic ingredients transformed into a savory, hearty meal. The buns were fluffy and toasted well to support the mountain of ingredients. I’m always a sucker for eggs on burgers, and this one was perfectly cooked with a nice, runny yolk that added moisture and fattiness.
For me, the thick cut peppered bacon was easily the star of the show. You get two massive slabs of pork belly that are unbelievably tender and smoky. I can see why people recommend ordering these on their own for a side. They added insane richness and subtle sweetness with an indescribable texture. The bacon practically melted into each bite, infusing the burger with fabulous meatiness and depth. I would come back just to get more of this bacon; it is a must-try.
Unfortunately, the burger does not come with fries, but I still recommend ordering a portion. It comes in a huge metal cone and the creamiest garlic aioli. The fries were pretty tasty and had a good crispy finish.
Some say this is the best burger in Chicago, and while it’s still early in my expedition, I can say with confidence that it is definitely up there. I wouldn’t be willing to regularly pay over $40 for this meal, but it’s absolutely worth trying at least once. I hear great things about the wings and bone marrow, so Au Cheval will surely be seeing me again!
Expect a wait during peak times (I waited 45–60 mins during the Chicago Marathon), but weekday afternoons are much easier. 100% worth it.
The only downside is the music. The base is up so high it literally was shaking our table. It doesn’t add to the experience and would be better to have it just slightly lower.
We ordered the double burger, which actually comes with 3 patties. It was huge!
The burgers were delicious. Meat was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The buns were buttery and fresh. The sauce and pickles were spot on.
The extra egg, which was supposed to be their signature touch, did not add much more flavor to the dish. But everything else was so good, that I think the egg didn’t play any part in it.
The fries were great too. Here the egg makes a great contribution and adds to the flavors and textures. The aioli was awesome.
The draft beer menu has a great selection. Many good options of local and international beers.
Overall, a very good experience.
My wife and I sat at the counter. I had the single cheeseburger (which is a double patty, and the double is a triple patty) with an egg. My wife had the chilaquiles. We shared fries.
I’m typically a fast eater even with more savory dishes, but this made me slow down, because of how unbelievably delicious it was. My wife enjoyed the chilaquiles, and would recommend them for those that don’t eat beef. Oh — and the fries were out of this world!
This place is a must visit. Full stop!
