My daughter suggested I go check out Athena so I did.

As soon as I walked in, I was silently greeted by three angora rabbits, who are all adorable and also beautiful.

I ordered the Nikki salad to go. I wondered if the to go salad would look as delicious as one of those being served in-house.

When I got home and opened the container, I was surprised at how much they had served me for only $15. It was a complete feast and will probably last for two more meals at least.

It had tomatoes, guacamole and saffron rice, which is delicious all by itself. The top was absolutely covered with bite-sized pieces of Lamb.

Service was welcoming and friendly. I’m so glad I stopped in and I will be enjoying the Nikki salad for the next couple of days. The only reason I gave it for stars is because it was a little tough to move around inside as the seating was very close together; although it is a small place, so less seating would mean less business for them. It’s comparatively new, I believe it’s a year and a half old, so I’m sure they’ll figure it out as time goes by.

Came to Astoria from WA just for the Film Museum and this place. The presentation of the shawarma plate was wonderful. I like my food saucy so I appreciated the hummus, green sauce, and cup of tzatziki.
It was a one-person show when we went, and there was a constant flow of dine in, dine out, and Door Dash customers. Please be patient and play some of the card games they have while you wait for your food!

If you want an authentic Mediterranean experience this is the place, with fresh and delicious mediterran/middle eastern food! Though as the sign said, they were not the easiest place to find, keep going towards the back of the pier.
Our meal was freshly prepared and we could taste the difference. I enjoyed the fresh lamb and beef gyro/shawarma, you can watch as the meat is freshly sliced off the gyro spit. While, the Mediterranean salad was my favorite, a simple and flavorful salad composed of familiar Mediterranean and Middle Eastern ingredients with it’s own style.
My spouse enjoyed the flavorful chicken kabob platter, which she recommends.
My kids’ finished their plates, yet their favorite was the baklava, which was a familiar yet unique experience.

Next time I’ll remember to take photos before we begin eating.

Everything we had was as if it was home cooked. I had the Avgalemon soup with sides of the falafel, saffron rice and dolma.
Mom had the chicken shawarma platter that included baba ganoush. I had worked at restaurants before and prepared these dishes. Have to say, very good.
Turkish coffee and Persian love cake for dessert. Yum.
If anyone is looking for a date night or a place for the whole family to dine, or take out, come here.

If I could give this place more than five stars I would! This was a highlight of our little trip to Astoria. The owners treated us like family and the food was impeccable. We got the appetizer platter, chicken shawarma platter and the Mediterranean salad. Super fresh with that homemade touch. We have lots of experience in Middle Eastern food, and this was probably the best we’ve ever had. The portions were very generous, and we walked away very full without feeling yucky. We came on a Thursday evening when there was a live singer, playing beautiful cozy music. Rose the owner and Hava the musician were so friendly and conversation was so great that we ended up taking selfies so we could remember that place forever! It’s hard to find the perfect combination of great food and atmosphere and company but this was definitely it! Thank you so much!

*Please note we came on a special event type day so I’m including a crepe picture that may not always be available* Lily Rose Cafe was on spectacular crepe duty and awesome all around✨

Definitely would do more than five stars across the board if I could. We had a FANTASTIC first visit to Athena today. We’ve been meaning to make the drive to come try it for a while (we live about an hour away) and will be making excuses to do so more often. The atmosphere is so beyond cozy, welcoming, fun, and just a great vibe all around. Our hosts were just awesome human beans all around, so genuinely nice and very passionate about what they do. We got to talk to them and it was like plopping down at your friend’s kitchen counter – just easy and comfortable. Food was absolutely amazing! Taste, detail in presentation, all awesome! We had the dinner for two special and it was dinner for 6 size Super impressed with the freshness of all veggies used (in the salad and on the platter, yum!), seasoning was amazing for everything – examples: the soup had lemon but wasn’t LEMON – I feel like a lot of times that can go too far one way It was really nice to taste the beans in the hummus and not have it super in your face flavored as something else, the grape leaves and falafel were the same – you could taste the individual ingredients in everything and appreciate them. The meat was sooo tender and perfectly seasoned, the pita was super fresh… So quality, attention to detail, enthusiasm, knows what they’re doing, and love sum up the food here. I could keep going

And last but not least – the crepe. Yikes, in an AWESOME way I’m not actually a crepe person, my Mr will eat anything that has sugar in it and be happy. This crepe however made me realize not all crepes are created equal and the dude also agreed there’s a sugary treat and then there’s a treat you think about months later and sigh

Thank you Athena Mediterranean Kitchen for a wonderful experience. Looking forward to stopping in repeatedly so we can try all the other menu items and some Turkish coffee ✌️ ✨

Stopped at Athena for a gyro and shawarma platter. The beef lamb gyro was probably the best I have ever had and everything on the shawarma platter was fresh and delicious. We will definitely be back 🙂

We came here for lunch last Thursday August 14 around 2:30pm and were really excited to try a new spot but the food was just really awful. I love Mediterranean food and rarely find problems with it but we got the appetizer plate and the quality was shockingly bad. The baba ganoush was absolutely tasteless, no salt or flavor and frankly looked old. The hummus was runny, the falafel was very undercooked and oily, also tasted like it wasn’t salted or seasoned. The best thing was the pita bread, but it tasted store bought. I’m rarely someone who leaves bad reviews but frankly I think the owner should know just how bad the food was that day. It left us feeling kind of queasy and we ended up leaving Astoria earlier than we wanted to. Our server was nice, but I don’t know what was going on in the kitchen. I have worked in restaurant kitchens before, there really isn’t an excuse for food to be this bad unless the staff isn’t paying attention to best by dates or taste testing batches of the things they made.

Food was delicious and artistically plated. The shawarma plate is enough for two meals, especially if you pair it with a surprisingly refreshing Ayran (yogurt beverage) and Persian love cake. Yum. The decor is very charming and the owners inviting. Highly recommended.
