The lamb here is probably the second best I’ve ever had (next to Zahav)—it’s worth coming just for that I think. The rest of my meal was pretty mediocre unfortunately.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the widely criticized service charge…. I always feel awkward when a 20% service charge is added and I’m told I need to tip on top of that. I am all for paying folks appropriately, but please price your menu accordingly so that your customers don’t have to deal with this awkward interaction at the end of their meal. Am I supposed to tip my normal 20% on top of the 20% service charge? That feels steep. Especially when the markup on my meal price to the out the door price was already 40+%.
All that being said, I’m sure I’ll be back for some more of that lamb, and I’ll try different menu items to supplement it next time!
Rated this a 7.9 on beli.
Pita was warm but too soft and almost tasted raw. Dips were fine but nothing special.
The steak and potatoes were incredibly disappointing and a small portion. The potatoes were literally just boiled with salt/pepper on them. The chicken bowl had a burnt flavor and did not taste good.
Baklava was drowning and syrup and way, way too sweet, although it was a good portion.
The grapefruit sorbet was pretty good. I would not recommend this place at any price point.
Our second visit, however, was less smooth. The host seemed overwhelmed, and when we asked for a table, we were told we could wait either at the bar or in the neighboring restaurant. We chose to sit at the bar and ordered drinks, the bartender was friendly and helpful. We waited there for our table, and asked twice about it; even though the table was ready the host was more preoccupied with staff than helping us, so we ended up having dinner at the bar.
The food was delicious, but unfortunately, we found a hair on one of the plates. The bartender handled the situation very professionally, arranged a discount with the host, and was understanding throughout. However, the host brought the check without acknowledging or apologizing for the incident, which was disappointing.
Overall, while the food and drink were great, the inconsistent service during our second visit affects our overall experience.
We ordered the falafel and hummus with complimentary pita bread to start, and everything was fresh and delicious. I had the chicken and rice bowl, and my husband ordered the schnitzel-style sandwich. Both dishes had unique flavors and were very tasty.
The only small note is that it felt a little on the pricier side, but the quality of the food, service, and overall experience made it worth it. I would definitely recommend Ash’Kara if you’re looking for great Mediterranean food and a lively dining atmosphere.
The appetizers are the hits here. Gluten free pita and regular Roti with Hummus and Kabneh were excellent. The zero-proof cocktails were a huge hit. Even the mushroom gnocchi (2 of us don’t even like mushrooms) was stellar. The entree sizes were small and although it was the best lamb I’ve ever had, I can’t justify coming back to spend $60+ on “lamb shank for 2” which was definitely not for 2. I could’ve killed it by myself, but saved some to be polite to my team.
We all got dessert, but only one was worth finishing. We ordered the cider sorbet, pistachio chocolate bar, and cheesecake with the cheesecake being the best one on the table. Cider sorbet was exactly as advertised. Very good! Just small and no extra texture with it. No one liked the pistachio chocolate despite being big fans of both knafeh and pistachio.
The service was second to none and the ambiance was perfect for this outing. We love that gratuity was already included and was reminded to us more than once so we weren’t pressure to tip extra. Props to the owners for doing right by the employees!
Overall loved it. Wouldn’t come back on my own dime even to get my favorites but would recommend it for the appetizers and drinks alone as a meal.
Between our two trips with friends, we all shared:
– Hummus with marinated feta
– Saganaki
– Whipped Labneh
– Htipiti
– Roasted Cauliflower Tagine
– Oven roasted leeks
– Falafel
– Fried Halloumi & Panisse
– Hummus with Mushroom Conserva
– Carrot Kibbeh Nayyeh
– Lamb Kebab
– Zaatar French Fries
– Caesar Salad
– Wood-fired Pita
– Paratha Roti
The hummus with mushrooms, tagine, Carrot Kibbeh Nayyeh, and lamb kebab would be my must orders. Everything is delicious though so you can’t go wrong.
Our second visit was for happy hour which is a great way to save some money. My number one recommendation is to go with a group and share everything so you can try more.
