It was definitely a beautiful experience, and the dishes all held their own – particularly the saline fried egg was expertly done (their signature) and the pigeon was of amazing quality and cooked just right.
The lobster with dill and cured tomatoes was perfectly poached and the flavors blended very well together.
All the dishes were very pleasant, excellent wine list, especially the variety of spanish sparkling. Service was prompt and friendly, but nothing was very impressive to me at all – there wasn’t a moment where I had a bite and was surprised.
The only thing I would say though, is that perhaps it is their way of cooking good produce in a true basque way, that the meal felt light even after 3 hours, which was impressive considering the quantity of food.
We are no big desert fans and its particularly hard to impress us with a chocolate desert but Arzak did just that. My wife has never in her life praised a desert let alone a chocolate desert but the one we were served with the tasting menu, was simply divine.
And how often can you say that you got a 3-star Michelin rated chocolate birthday cake to go?
Unfortunately there were a few points that could be improved upon.
The wine pairing is ok and the wines are absolutely not bad in any way but I’ve had better wine pairings at other restaurants. I think the restaurant tries to hard to keep it ‘local’ ie. Spanish wines (except for one).
I would also suggest that after the shrimp dish the water glasses be exchanged for new glasses because otherwise you are potentially left with a fishy water glass for the remainder of the menu.
The biggest complaint I have is about our fellow diners, switch your bloody phones off! There is absolutely nothing more annoying (besides kids that can’t behave) than having cell phones ringing and people happily having a conversation over their phone in a restaurant, especially one like this.
PS. Perhaps the restaurant reception can tell people to put their phones in ‘fine dining’ mode aka. airplane mode such as not to disturb other diners.
The chef apologized but asked for understanding, explaining that because the meat is wild game, pellets cannot be removed 100%. However, if a Michelin three-star restaurant chooses to serve hunted game, proper inspection — including the use of metal detection — should be expected. Would the same response be given if Michelin inspectors were at the table?
Although the cost of two glasses of wine was compensated at the end, this is not simply a matter of compensation.
To top it all off, we were greeted by the chef (Elena Maria Arzak) and polished things off with a 1964 PX.
Our visit in June was even better, and had great conversation with Elena, daughter of J Arzak
