Eating at Artone’s Pizza and Subs felt exactly like watching Notre Dame settle into a big game early—no nerves, no wasted motion, just confidence from the opening kick. This is the kind of place that understands who it is and leans all the way into it, the same way Notre Dame football leans into tradition, toughness, and doing things the right way.
I ordered the steak sub, and it came out like a perfectly scripted opening drive. Hot, packed, and aggressive in the best way. The steak was tender and loaded end to end, not skimpy, not scattered—every bite mattered. The bread held everything together the way a great offensive line protects its quarterback. No sloppiness, no breakdowns, just steady execution. This sub doesn’t need tricks or hype—it wins by being fundamentally sound.

Then there were the fries with powdered sugar, which honestly felt like the unexpected play call that flips momentum. You don’t expect it, but once it hits, it makes complete sense. Crispy fries with that sweet dusting worked shockingly well, like Notre Dame opening up the playbook at the perfect moment. It’s creative without being gimmicky—bold, but still disciplined. That’s good coaching, whether it’s football or food.

First timer. I’ve driven by here a million times while working. I’m a north towner. It looks like a traditional buffalo pizza but tastes like a bocce to me. The sauce was almost identical to bocce. I loved it. Could have had a lil more cup n char but still good. Softer cook on dough crust which I do like. Plenty of cheese and sauce.

Food service went downhill. Ordered a stinger light oil and got a dry sub. Chicken finger sub with oil was nothing but oil, soggy, and dripping with oil. Had a slice of pizza that ended up having oil on it because they had the subs on the box. Fries should’ve been cooked longer as well, as they were cold and barely cooked… won’t be returning

Ordered a large cheese and pepperoni pizza and picked it up on my way home from work and was very disappointed when I opened the box. The pizza was paper thin and had no crust and was burn on the edges. I guess you have to say cheese, pepperoni, and double dough.

Born and raised in Buffalo. 29 years old. I kept hearing about their steak subs. I figured it was time to try one. I have to say Jim’s and la novas definitely makes a better steak sub. I make a better steak sub at home. I buy 40lb box’s from the meat market. Their sub had no flavor and was dry.

Steak Hoagies. This may be Artone’s Pizza and Subs, but the steak hoagies are what you should be ordering. I’m going to venture to say they have been around for nearly 50 years. Those of us who have been paying attention, know that includes a few years on and off that they were sadly closed. I’ve eaten steak hoagies from many places, including the two famous places in Philly. It’s the oil. That’s my answer to what makes Artone’s Steak Hoagie exceptional, the oil, and that they cut the steak up so you can actually eat it instead of fighting with your sandwich.

 Nowadays, they have a place to sit down inside the restaurant (stools at a small counter facing the street) to enjoy your hoagie, but my go-to is on a bench in Cazenovia Park, regardless of the temperature outside. This is not a fancy place in a fancy part of town, but the hoagie is worth going out of the way for. My first Artone’s steak hoagie was on a Sunday morning (afternoon) while nursing a hangover I acquired at the Bayview Beach Club, the night/morning before, in 1988. Double meat, cheese, peppers, onions, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and oil (Do Not Forget the Oil!). Back then, it was just a counter and you had no choice but to take it somewhere else to eat. But we didn’t live nearby, not even close, so a bench in Cazenovia Park was where we would eat. It became such a tradition that even after having left WNY 20 years ago, we still take the time to have hoagie in the park every time we visit. Artone’s is a local joint with a good size menu that may have other great things on it, but in the 30+ years I’ve eaten there, I’ve never had anything other than the steak hoagie. I can’t say what else is good on the menu, though I have heard that the pizza is pretty good too, especially if you like sweet sauce and those wonderful crispy mini bowls of grease called pepperoni, how could you go wrong?!
