ARTISANE – Exceptional French Dining Experience in Montpellier

Reviews
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a small, beautifully curated restaurant with an intimate atmosphere. That evening, there were only three tables occupied, including ours. The open kitchen added a very authentic touch. Once seated, we were offered water and presented with the menus and wine list.
The menu structure is very straightforward: the only choice is a surprise tasting menu based on seasonal ingredients. One page is dedicated to their suppliers—highlighting their focus on quality—followed by a short description of the restaurant’s philosophy. The only observation I would make is the lack of an English version of the menu, although both owners speak excellent English (one of them is Californian), so this is hardly an issue.
Since this was our first experience at a recognized fine-dining restaurant, we decided to go for the full experience: the tasting menu paired with a wine pairing. Each dish featured bold flavors that, when combined in a single bite, were perfectly balanced. A perfect example was the first main course, featuring scallops, various mushrooms, and seaweed. While each ingredient has a pronounced flavour on its own, together they create an unexpectedly harmonious combination.
Another surprising dish was the second main course, featuring a choux pastry filled with Parmesan and wasabi cream. My girlfriend doesn’t tolerate spicy food and had never tried wasabi before, but the chef managed to completely remove the spiciness while preserving the distinctive wasabi flavor—an impressive technique.
A special mention goes to the appetizer with spiced carrot cream, which was my personal favorite, and to the first dessert—made with genuine Madagascan vanilla, whose pure flavor is unmistakable—which was my girlfriend’s favorite.
The wine pairing also deserves praise: although described as four 11 cl glasses, the pours were generally more generous. Additionally, for the two desserts—very different from each other—two different wines were served, which we really appreciated.
The overall atmosphere was warm, professional, yet friendly. The waiter took the time to chat with us after explaining each dish, helped by the small number of tables, which allowed for attentive and relaxed service.
In short, ARTISANE offers a refined, balanced, and welcoming gastronomic experience. We will definitely return.
Now the food was next level. They deserve all the recognition and more! The chef adapts the menu based on dietary restrictions, taste, and of course the seasonal produce. The price tag is hefty, but great value for money considering it is haute cuisine. Would love to be back soon!
This dish, in my opinion, achieves a distinctly Eastern flavor in a Western style, while maintaining excellent texture (*though it could also be that my understanding of Western cuisine is too limited, as I’ve only lived in Europe for a little over a year, in the culinary desert of Nordic countries).
*The price without drink is 85. A fair price for the taste and service.
